Please take the time to meet with studentsand teachers from these schools when they visit your child’sschool during the Community Informational Fairs. You areencouraged to study the educational programs offered by each Pilot School, and together with your child, prioritize your preferences.

The Robert F. Kennedy Zone of Choice (RFKZOC) comprises six newschools located at the former Ambassador Hotel site that are part of the Pilot Schools Network. These include:

• Ambassador School of Global Education (ASGE), Grades K-5

• Ambassador School of Global Leadership (ASGL), Grades 6-12

• Los Angeles High School of the Arts (LAHSA), Grades 9-12

• New Open World Academy (NOW), Grades K-12

• School for the Visual Arts & Humanities (SVAH), Grades 9-12

• UCLA Community School (UCLA-CS), Grades K-12

Schools in the RFKZOC Pilot Schools Network embody the social justice legacy of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Questions:á WHAT IS A PILOT SCHOOL?

A Pilot School is an autonomous small school. Pilot Schools wereestablished in 2007 as role models of educational innovation, andas research and development sites for effective teaching andlearning in urban public schools. While Pilot Schools are part of theschool district, they have autonomy over budget, staffing,governance, curriculum/ assessment, and the school calendar.This increased flexibility enables the school to further meet theneeds of students and parents.

Pilot Schools are committed to the idea that student engagementand achievement increase when schools are small, personalized,mission-driven, and have autonomy over their resources inexchange for increased accountability.

Upon completing the enrollment form students will receive a letter of acceptance from their designated PilotSchool, and will report to their assigned school on the first day of school.

Ambassador School of Global Education (ASGE)ááá Grades K-5

The Ambassador School of GlobalEducation’s (ASGE) nurturing environmenthelps children experience success inacademic and social settings, andencourages an appreciation of the variouscultures, languages, and communitiesaround the world.

The school’s instructional autonomyfacilitates a global, thematic curriculumthat highlights a range of traditions andadapts to the families it serves. As part of a national network of schools, ASGEcreates opportunities for teachers tocollaborate nationally and internationallyon student projects.

ASGE is the first elementary schoolmember of the International Studies School

Network (ISSN) – a division of the Asia Society,which is the leading global and pan-Asianorganization working to strengthen relationshipsand promote understanding among the people,leaders and institutions of the U.S. and Asia.

Ambassador School ofGlobal Leadership (ASGL)ááá Grades 6-12

The Ambassador School of GlobalLeadership (ASGL) serves the academicneeds of 650 students grades 6-12. Itscurriculum addresses the Californiacontent standards through an“internationalized” lesson approach.

ASGL students have an opportunity tobecome multilingual through worldlanguages class offerings in every gradelevel. Electives explore the inter-connectedness of people from around theworld (i.e. Model United Nations) in thepast and present in order to help studentsshape a better future. In addition,students interact with internationalstudents, and with professionals whowork in diplomacy, education, publicservice, business and trade.

At ASGL, students are challenged to stepout of the familiar, and see the lessons fromthe perspectives of other cultures. Theylearn to appreciate, and understand what itmeans to be a global citizen, and areequipped with the necessary knowledge andskills for work, college, post secondaryeducation and life.

Los Angeles High School of the Arts (LAHSA)ááá Grades 9-12

At the Los Angeles High School of the Arts(LAHSA), students learn real-world skillsnecessary for success in life and theentertainment industry. Students aretaught by professional actors, directors,dancers and singers, lighting, set, sound,and costume designers and technicians.

Ranked in 2009 by Newsweek Magazineas one of the top 325 schools in thecountry, LAHSA is quickly emerging as aleader in educational innovation. LaOpinion – the largest Spanish-languagenewspaper in the country – has recognizedLAHSA in articles and videos. The schoolhas the highest improvement rate on theCalifornia Standards Test, and the highesttest scores in all of the seventeen small

schools in the Belmont Zone of Choice. In addition, LAHSA was just recognized bythe LAUSD Board of Education for itsoutstanding work with students.

LAHSA students go on to attend some of the most prestigious universities in the country.

New Open World (NOW) Academyááá Grades K-12

The New Open World (NOW) Academydevelops globally-minded, technologically-proficient students who achieve academicexcellence, recognize their commonhumanity and shared guardianship of theplanet, and are life-long learners.

NOW Academy provides necessarytechnological tools and assistance thatensure students meet the California StateStandards, and A-G course requirementsfor college admission. Students use onlineaccess to view textbooks and the generaleducation curriculum, produceassignments, take assessments, createprojects and portfolios, and communicatewith teachers and peers. Multilingualinstruction in English, Spanish and Koreanbegins as early as kindergarten.

Beyond academics, students participate inyearly community services/ service learningprojects as well as internships, workexperience, outdoor education (ECHO)programs, College Readiness (SOAR)programs, and other off-site opportunities.

School for the Visual Arts and Humanities (SVAH)ááá Grades 9-12

The School for the Visual Arts andHumanities (SVAH) program enablesstudents to reach their creative and academicpotential through a rigorous collegepreparatory education anchored in the arts.SVAH students develop self-expressionthrough a four-year sequence of courses,hands-on experiences (i.e. arts internships atMOCA and LACMA), fieldtrips, and exposureto the art world. Courses in Western andworld civilizations connect classes to local andglobal events, while Advanced Placement andcollege courses combined with annual visits topublic and private colleges prepare studentsto access and succeed in higher education.

The School for the Visual Arts and Humanitiesis an accredited school recognized statewidefor instructional, artistic, and academicexcellence. At SVHA, students graduateinspired and equipped to contribute to theircommunity and the world.

The UCLA Community School (UCLA-CS)prepares students for college, career, andengaged citizenship. As a K-12 school,UCLA-CS promotes stable relationshipswith students, and eliminates disruptivetransitions from one school to another.

UCLA-CS is a unique partnership betweenLAUSD, UCLA and the local community.This partnership enables UCLA-CS to offerstudents enrichment activities at UCLA,and the opportunity to learn alongsideuniversity students and faculty working atthe school. Student interest is also linkedto California State Standards, Career andTechnical Education, and A-G Collegepreparatory requirements for entrance tothe state’s public universities (UC, CSU).Personalized multi-age dens (K-6) anddivisions (7-12) keep students together with

the same main teacher for two years. K-6 dens are organized to supportbilingualism of Spanish and English, and/ or Korean and English.
