Hi everyone,

It’s June and I can’t believe we are already halfway through the year, where has the time gone?

June is fair and fete season so there’s plenty to do this month and many great causes to support, all we need is for the sun to shine. We’ve had so much rain recently, I’m desperate to put to my boots in the cupboard and get the fl ip fl ops out! Surely it’s time we had the opportunity to enjoy some summer warmth.

This month marks seven years since I put my fi rst edition together and delivered it to the printer. I sat on my patio with a cup of tea wondering what on earth I’d done, I was fi lled with trepidation at the thought of so many people reading my words and viewing my work. Seven years on and I have no regrets whatsoever. There have been many ups and own downs along the way, and very little quality time spent with my family in the early days, taking a holiday is a massive challenge, but it’s all been worth it.

I feel that I’ve made so many new friends, both readers and advertisers. There have been so many long chats on the phone or via email, it’s a wonder the magazines ever make it to the printer. Thank you so much for making the experience such a positive one, I feel extremely humbled by the feedback I receive. And long may it continue.

June is the month of the Cottage Garden perennials. It’s my favourite summer month; the spring-green freshness is still there and the fl owers are bright and breezy, but it’s also the month of endless grass cutting and furious weeding, as the surge of growth is relentless, like a rising green tide. I much prefer this to August though, when the tide begins to turn and there’s that dusty (or thundery) lull of not much happening.

Delphiniums are the most stately of the cottage garden plants and they need to be treated like royalty if you’re going to get the best out of them. Make sure to provide them with good rich soil, watch out for slugs and snails decimating the early growth. Then make sure you provide supports for the fl owers – there’s nothing more disheartening than seeing a towering spire crashing to the ground. If this does happen, however, you may get another fl ush of blooms later in the summer.

One of my favourite plants Geum ‘Mrs Bradshaw’ is blooming at the moment. It’s cheerful deep orange fl owers contrast well with purple Alliums and the frothy Lime green fl owers of Achemilla mollis. If you prefer a more demure colour mix, try the hardy Geranium ‘Johnson’s Blue’, or the longer fl owering ‘Rozanne’ near the lovely pink and white Peony ‘Bowl of Beauty’ and the tall pale lemon spire of Verbascum Gainsborough’. All of these are charming, unfussy plants, but unfortunately the same can’t be said for the mainstay of the June garden - the Rose. Roses are greedy plants and prone to many unsightly affl ictions. Keep them looking good by feeding with a proprietory Rose fertiliser, watching out for the fi rst signs of pests and diseases and dead-heading to prolong the display. Roses are the offi cial birthday fl ower for June and, probably because they’re such fusspots, I have to admit

A Day in the Life of a Pet - Sitt er

I feel there are certain jobs in life that seem like they should be really enjoyable, and, if you love animals, pet-sitting is one of these.A typical day for us as pet-sitters will start for us with putting out our overnight small animals that are boarding - guinea pigs and rabbits are the main guests.We do occasionally have ferrets, chinchillas and even a bearded dragon who does not go out, as our English weather is a little too cold, and I think he would wander off…better off in his nice warm vivarium.Once they are safely out on the lawn it’s time to clean the hutches and change the waters. This is followed by the daily house visits, mainly to an array of cats at their homes. We will stay with the pets for as long as necessary and for as long the customer requests.Our rounds can vary from two or three visits up to nine or ten in the busy holiday periods.This will usually take us through to lunchtime, when we will usually have our dog visits for walking, or just letting out and feeding.Good exercise and fun as well.Back home for a spot of late lunch and much needed paperwork, then it’s time to put away and feed the small animals followed by the evening visits which will vary - some owners are happy with one visit and some insist on two.Lastly we check that all the much loved boarders are happy then it’s time for tea and bed(for us!)www.petshomesandgardens.co.uk

The Handy HouseholdThe Handy Household Clever Ways with a Sprinkling of Salt

Salt is most commonly used as a fl avour enhancer, but this household staple is much more versatile than that. Salt has an affi nity to water and can draw moisture out of many foods. What’s more, grains of table salt are very hard, which means they can act as an abrasive. These properties give salt a variety of uses around the home.When boiling eggs, a pinch of salt in the water will prevent the shells from cracking and adding a pinch when beating eggs or cream will make them whip faster and higher. Moreover, if you rub salt into the cavities of chicken or turkey, it will help to keep the bird moist while cooking.Staying in the kitchen, washing green leafy vegetables in salt water will easily remove all the dirt and if you need to chill a bottle of wine quickly, just place it in an ice bucket with alternate layers of ice and salt, fi ll with water and your tipple will be ready in about ten minutes. Even red wine stains are no problem to remove - simply cover the stain with salt and pour over boiling water. You can also use salt to remove any sticky residue on the bottom of an iron, by running the hot iron over plain paper sprinkled with salt. And if you are caught out by frost and ice, table salt can be used as a substitute for rock salt, to de-ice paths and pavements.So with all these handy uses, you might want to think twice before tossing that spilled salt over your shoulder.

Design and decorating

Width is the crucial issue in hallways, and unless you’re prepared to do some substantial building work and remove a wall, you’re probably stuck with what you have. To increase the feeling of space in a

narrow hallway, use pale colours and add large mirrors (ideal for checking your refl ection just before you leave the house, too). Keep the space as clear as possible by adding only the most essential items of slender storage furniture, and using the full height of your walls rather than encroaching on fl oor space. If, on the other hand, you have a large and spacious hallway – lucky you! Think of it as an extra living space and make the most of it by adding a sofa or chairs, bookcases or a writing desk. For plenty of inspirational ideas, see Hallways, Corridors and Staircases by Leslie Geddes-Brown, with fabulous photography by Christopher Drake (Ryland, Peters & Small, £25). Whatever the size of your hall, consider it as a linking room and make sure your choice of decorative schemes works well when doorways to other rooms are open. If you have chosen a pale colour scheme for the walls, woodwork could be slightly darker for interest. Halls that see a lot of wear and tear could be painted with an extra-tough paint, or clad with tongue-and-groove panelling, tiles or hard-wearing wallpaper.

Stone, ceramic or quarry tiles, or colourful Victorian encaustic tiles, are all easy to care for, while solid wooden boards or parquet require only some regular polishing or waxing. Cheap wood laminates may not last too long in such a well-used space. Lino or vinyl can look impressive, too, especially when laid in patterns. Carpet, however, is more problematic as you’ll need to choose a colour or pattern that won’t show the dirt – and make sure that it is suitable for a hallway: an 80:20 twist classifi ed for heavy domestic use is often the best.

Cosy and bright

Under-fl oor heating is ideal for narrow halls, but do check that it will be compatible with your fl ooring. On the other hand, if there’s room, you could opt for eye-catching radiators, perhaps a period-style cast-iron column or an eye-catching modern type.

The former is best when space is tight – slender fl oor-to-ceiling cupboards with plain doors, (perhaps painted the same colour as the walls, or even mirrored to maximise light) ranked along one wall, will hold masses yet be hardly noticeable. On the other hand, you could make a statement with an eclectic selection of free-standing cupboards, sideboards, tables, benches, dressers, baskets, shelves and so on. If necessary, fi t hooks or pulleys high up on walls to hold bikes, and perhaps a coat stand or row of pegs for everyday coats and bags. Umbrella stands and boot racks are ideal for spacious, country-style halls. Somewhere to keep post and keys is a good idea, too, whether a bowl and rack on a dresser or a small, wall-mounted cupboard and set of hooks. If you have lots of books or delicate items to display, a shelf running the length of the hallway above head height can be extremely useful. For times when space is really hard to fi nd, it is even possible to build storage drawers into the treads of a wooden staircase.

Saint Mary Westwell Flower Festival

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of HM the Queen, a Flower Festival is being held from 2nd – 4th June in St Mary’s Church, Westwell. Pan-fried Mackerel Pan-fried Mackerel Fillet with Lemon Fillet with Lemon Spring VegetablesSpring Vegetables

Heat the butter in a sauté pan or deep frying pan. Gently cook the shallot for about 5 minutes until it starts to soften and becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes.

Add the vegetable mix, cutting anything large like carrots, to match the size of the other vegetables. Stir for a minute or so, pour in the stock and lemon juice and add the zest. Season, then cover and cook for 5 minutes.

Spoon in the creme fraiche and dill and cook for another 3-4 minutes.

Heat another frying pan with the olive oil. Slice the mackerel fi llet in half lengthways, taking out any bones you may fi nd. Season the fi sh then pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side.

Serve the mackerel on a bed of the vegetables with plenty of lemon wedges and some new potatoes.

Tai Chi - What’s it All About? Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is an eff ective exercise for health of mind and body. Although an art with great depth of knowledge and skill, it can be easy to learn and soon delivers its health benefi ts. For many, it continues as a lifetime journey. There are many styles and forms of tai chi, the major ones being Chen, Yang, Wu, another Wu (actually two diff erent words in Chinese) and Sun. Each style has its own unique features, although most styles share similar essential principles.

These essential principles include the mind being integrated with the body; fl uidity of movement; control of breathing; and mental concentration. The central focus is to enable the qi or life force to fl ow smoothly and powerfully throughout the body. Total harmony of the inner and outer self comes from the integration of mind and body, achieved through the ongoing practice of tai chi.

Medical and fi tness authorities stress that eff ective exercise for health should include three components: cardio-vascular fi tness or stamina, muscular strength, and fl exibility.

Cardio-vascular fi tness means better heart-lung capacity. A good supply of blood and oxygen is essential for maintaining your health and for healing any disease.

In 1996, a study was carried out involving 126 post-heart attack patients. They were randomly assigned to participate in a tai chi class, an aerobic exercise class or a non-exercise support group. The patients from the tai chi group came out with better cardiovascular fi tness and lower blood pressure than patients from the non-exercise group. To top it off , 80 percent of the people in the tai chi group kept up the practice of tai chi while the non-exercise support group retained only 10 percent of its original membership. The aerobic group retained less of its members than the tai chi group and their diastolic blood pressure did not improve.

By strengthening our muscles, we keep our joints stable and protected. Of course, we need our muscles to move and when we move, the muscles pump fl uid and blood throughout the body, improving the functions not only of the organs and joints but also the entire body.

Many well-known sports heroes suff er from osteoarthritis resulting from injuries. Yet, they are able to perform at their peak level because their strong muscles protect their joints and reduce the pain of osteoarthritis. After they retire from active sports, however, and their training lapses, their muscles weaken. Arthritis fl ares up. Perhaps we can conclude that had they taken up tai chi upon retirement they would have stayed in shape and enjoyed a healthier, happier retirement.

Tai chi improves fl exibility and therefore our range of motion, making us more functional. Being fl exible keeps our joints, muscles - our entire body - healthy and allows us to be more active.

I used to think that when the kids left school they’d be self-suffi cient grownups and I wouldn’t have to worry about them anymore. Hah! Let me tell you about my mornings.

Three days a week my son, who is 19, goes to college less than 20 miles away. But the free bus winds around every village and takes an hour and a half. He has to catch it at 7.30, which means leaving the house at 7.25. Now if that was me I’d be up at 6.30 to give myself plenty of time for breakfast and a shower. But not my son. In his opinion, breakfast and a shower are for wusses and he can put off leaving bed until 7.20. Which is all well and good, if he can make it.

But for a teenager, waking up is hard to do. So he sets his alarm to go off three times at fi ve-minute intervals between 6.40 and 6.55. And if the fi rst blast isn’t enough to drag him back from dreamland, it certainly does the trick for me. I’m wide awake, waiting for the second blast and the third. The wait between blasts is bad enough, but what comes next is worse.

He inhabits the attic; the parental bedroom is directly underneath. I can hear everything. Or rather, I can’t hear anything. I can’t hear him heave himself reluctantly

out of bed. I can’t hear him stumbling around looking for something clean to wear among the piles of dirty clothes. I can’t hear him trudge down the attic stairs to the bathroom. I can’t hear the bathroom door open and close and the bolt slam home.

I’m on a knife-edge. Is he going to make it or isn’t he? If he misses the free college bus he’ll have to take two ordinary buses, pay more than £5, and be late. Eventually I can’t bear it any more. I don’t actually have to get up – my offi ce is all of three paces from the foot of our stairs; but I can’t stick it out. I rap tentatively on his door. Only now he’s 19 and a man I can’t bawl him out for the lazy idle git that he is. Instead, I have to say something neutral like: “Everything under control up there?” I still receive the same old teenage mouthful back, though.

Now I know perfectly well that I should let him stew. If he can’t get up in time for the free bus, then let him pay. He’s a grown man now and ought to take the consequences of his own actions, or rather, inactions. He’ll never learn otherwise. But it’s easier said than done. I challenge any parent not to look at that great hulking thing looming in the doorway and not see an image of

their little boy aged four.

Not that this kind of sentimentality would fi nd much favour with him. He insists that he’s grown up and can do all the things that grownups do. He drinks, he smokes, he stays out all night and we can’t stop him. Not that we would want to. But I can’t help thinking that his claim to adulthood would have a little more credibility if he embraced the downsides, too. Like picking up his dirty laundry more frequently than every fortnight. Like washing up occasionally. Like vacuuming his bedroom and even changing his sheets.

And like getting up in the morning without causing me a nervous breakdown!

When George Osborne announced the 2012 budget at the end of March, I’m sure I was not alone in my dismay at the plans for further increases in the cost of petrol. As someone who clocks up just shy of fi fty miles per day going to and from work, it is certainly not something that I welcomed with open arms.

In August there will be a rise of 3.62p per litre on fuel, and courtesy of a handy calculation published by the AA, this is likely to cost £1.81 more to anyone fi lling a fi fty litre tank. It might not sound like much but when you consider that the price of petrol was under a pound as recently as May 2009, the reality of the rate of increase becomes apparent.

Of course the government has a reason for taking this action, and in no way do I intend that statement to be sarcastic. We are all acutely aware of the current global economic situation that we fi nd ourselves in, and with that most are able to acknowledge – however begrudgingly – that the government has to fi nd ways of continuing to generate the funds needed to effectively run our country.

What I would like to question, however, is not only whether an increase in fuel duty is the best way to help grow to the economy, but whether it will serve to realise this aim at all. The impact of such an increase is notable enough for individuals such as myself who have witnessed an increase in the cost of their commute, but the detrimental effect on UK businesses is on a far larger scale.

Now I’m no economist, but let’s look at it logically.

Increasing the cost of fuel will have the direct effect of increasing the costs of haulage companies. These companies will not be able to afford to absorb the entirety of the rise, meaning that at least some of it will have to be passed on to the businesses that use them. These businesses then have to sell their products at a higher price to cover the rise in their costs, which has the consequence of increasing the shelf price of their product.

The outcome of this is that people can no longer afford the quantities that they previously bought. This in itself reduces the revenue of the businesses and will inevitably mean that some go bust, which reduces the competition in the market – and competition drives down prices.

Using the same logic, if the government were to reduce fuel prices it would provide consumers with more expendable income and with it their opportunity to provide the government with twenty per cent VAT on most of their purchases.

Focusing solely on generating funds from motorists, even a distinction between fuel costs to business and private users could go some way to fi nding a middle ground; not to mention the 250,000 vintage cars on the road, all of which are exempt from tax.

I confess this point is born out of personal suffering following the decision to add to the price of petrol, and I’m certain there are people who would point to obvious fl aws in my argument. Perhaps my whole line of thought is simply too logical and not scientifi c enough, but come on George: there’s got to be some other way, surely?
