    Hi everyone,

I must start this month by thanking those of you that have been sending in jokes for the Wit & Wisdom page. Emails relating to a variety of diff erent subjects have contained a contribution of wit tagged onto the end., and a special thank you goes to Mo Charlton for sending me numerous jokes and sayings, as well as adding me to his email circulation of witty repartee. Wit & Wisdom lives on!

As this magazine arrives we are about to head into Easter and our thoughts turn to time off from work (yippee), family get togethers and CHOCOLATE Easter Eggs! Im sure that a very respectable period of time has now elapsed since Mothers Day so Im more than ready for my next chocolate fi x.

Easter tends to be the fi rst opportunity to get out into the open and enjoy the spring sunshine, I do so hope that the weather continues to be good through the holiday period, its such a tonic. For those of you planning to tackle the garden, youll fi nd all the help you need within these pages, hopefully this will make it that little easier and enjoyable. You can than sit back with your Easter Eggs at hand and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

As I write a thought just crossed my mind, isnt it strange that I have no-one advertising chocolate in this magazine? I would make such a good sponsor!

Have a great Easter ~ Enjoy!

Spring is in full swing the birds are shouting, blossom is blossoming and the garden has sprung into life. The tasks for the month are too long to list, but one of them if tackled now will save you lots of time and eff ort as the season progresses, in fact if you leave it too long, you may go off gardening for life when you fi nally get to it. Im talking about weeding.

Weeding is one of the (many) onerous gardening tasks and the rate at which the pesky things grow is amazing. They spread while youre not looking or while youre too busy with the other growing pile of insert pile of choice ironing? Dishes? Clutter? Paperwork? The thing about weeds is that theyre very competitive with anything else that grows; theyve evolved over millennia to out-compete all the namby cultivated plants. Theyve learned to germinate earlier, while the soil is still cold and wet, and to hang on in there, some of them re-growing from a tiny speck of root when you think youve pulled the blighters up.

There are two main types of weed perennial (there forever) and annual (living for just one year, but spreading their seed around - forever). Perennials are tough and can spread quickly by sending out runners and underground roots that are hard to

eradicate, especially when they grow among existing plants. Annual weeds seem easier to control, but some can germinate and set their own seed within 3 weeks. And each plant contains thousands of seeds that can lie dormant in the soil for years.

It helps if you can identify the seedling leaves of weeds that way you can get rid of them before they start spreading (key in weed seedling identifi cation on the computer and lots of useful info pops up). If you can get to them early, you may just need a hoe (and a trowel for the tricky ones left over from last

year). I try to pull up weeds whenever I walk through the garden (and then leave irritating little piles of them around the place). But weeding regularly will help you to stay on top of them.

So pick up your hoe, or choose an alternative weapon of mass destruction (but try to be kind to wildlife skulls on the side of weedkiller packaging dont bode well) and prepare for battle.

Barking Mad is the perfect alternative to kennels where dogs are cared for by a local,

carefully selected host family to ensure that the dogs home life routine is maintained. In addition they enjoy lots of lovely walks and cuddles too. Bertie, one of her customers enjoys his rich tea biscuit every morning when at home so thats what he has when hes on holiday too!

Lorraine explains After an initial consultation where we fi nd out all about your dogs everyday routine, likes and dislikes, they are then carefully matched to the most appropriate host family to ensure your pet has a wonderful stay, so that you can relax on your holiday too. Some of my customers had never been able to go away and leave their dog before but do so now knowing their pet will be safe, stress free and having a great time. Whilst you are on holiday you be updated by text to let you know how your dog is getting on, if you wish

As one local customer said we were rather nervous when we left our two much loved dogs for the fi rst www.barkingmad.uk.com

time but now we couldnt be happier. The best part of Lorraines job is seeing her dog customers go away on holiday and then return having had a great time. Many of the host families live in the country so visiting dogs get lovely walks in our beautiful Kent countryside. As Lorraine says Sometimes I have great diffi culty getting them in the car to go home, although they are always very pleased to see their owners.

Lorraine is also always looking for host families too. To be a host you need to be a dog lover, be at home most of the day, have a secure garden and be committed to maintaining a dogs home life routine. Lorraine says my hosts really look forward to their doggie guests coming to stay. It gives them all of the pleasure of having a dog with none of the fi nancial, emotional or full time commitment

The Cabriole leg design has been around for hundreds of years and was commonly used in this country in the time of Queen Anne and Chippendale. Its a wonderful aesthetic shape when carved and shaped correctly, and is normally fi nished at the base by a simple pad shape, although looks even more interesting with a well carved hoof or ball and claw.

Four footed mammals were the basis of the cabriole leg design, especially mammals like the goat. (They are part of the ungulate family which is not interesting at all, but I wanted to write the word ungulate).

Years ago I broke my left leg, actually crashing into a car at 60 miles an hour whilst sitting on the back of a motorbike is what really broke my leg! I was a little alarmed at the consequential cast that was applied, I say it wasnt the cast, but the way it exaggerated the shape of my God given leg. I would like to blame the aforementioned crash for the odd shape but alas, another Tozer confession in this magazine will have to reveal that God gave me the legs of an ungulate.

Basically I have a little bowed leg issue, my Dad used to say, for instance, that my legs were so bowed I couldnt stop a pig in a passage. Another favourite of his was that, on coming to see me take part in the school sports day, he said that I looked like an egg whisk trying to run.

It was only then that I stared down at this oddly shaped cast and realised that my Dad had been right all along.

I was actually half goat. So I have been thinking.

On the upside however, if I unfortunately loose a leg, I have loads of Cabriole legs to choose from at my furniture Emporium.

I was thinking I would probably go for one with the ball and claw feature, which could

be an improvement to my human feet. I will also go for a little decoration, like a shell motif carved around the knee area, so once I am dressed and greeting my customers no one will ever know any diff erence!

The Handy Household - New Ways With NewspapersWhile we all know that our daily newspaper is a source of news and entertainment, what you might not realise is that it is an extremely useful product to keep around the house. So, next time youre about to recycle your old newspapers, stop for a minute and consider the following uses.Newspaper is a very absorbent material - it has to be to absorb the ink thats printed on it. But this means that its also fantastic at absorbing all sorts of moisture. One of the most useful ways of taking advantage of this characteristic is that of drying out leather shoes and bags. Simply place crumpled newspaper in the shoes or bag overnight and in the morning not only will they be dry, but there wont be any water stains. If you come home with wet wellies or snow boots, placing them on a pile of old newspapers will avoid creating messy puddles on the fl oor.Newspaper will absorb any odours in shoes, lunch boxes or vegetable drawers. Just place a balled-up piece of newspaper in the offending items and it will deodorise them in no time. You can use newspaper for cleaning tough marks off mirrors and windows by using cleaning fl uid on the paper. To clean antique glass that might be damaged by cleaning solutions, use the paper with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part warm water. With all these versatile uses, lets hope the digital age doesnt signal the end for the newspaper, because its clearly not just for reading the news.

16Size mattersStart by considering the size of desk you require. The bigger the better you will never regret having plenty of space on which to spread out. Do you also need a table and chairs for meetings, or perhaps a sofa or chaise longue on which to recline and read or think? And storage is vital, whether its a shelf above the desk, plan chests, ling cabinets, drawers or stacking boxes. Bear in mind that some things will need to be within arms reach, while less-used items can be stored on high shelves or deep cupboards, not necessarily in the same room. In awkward rooms, such as lofts, under-stairs or other small areas, built-in storage will make the most of the space; otherwise you may consider cheaper, free-standing options.

Get technicalA good start is to count up your electrical appliances and ensure that you install enough plug sockets in the right places (about three inches above the work surface is good, plus some hidden lower down, too) to accommodate them all. Place electrical items together so you dont end up with long stretches of cable between them, and clip trailing wires to backs of table legs where possible. Alternatively, going wireless eliminates some cables entirely, and gives you greater exibility about where to site your equipment.

Light fantasticGood task and general lighting is vital to avoid eye strain when working at home. The more natural light the better though beware glare from direct sun, and position your desk at right angles to a window if possible. For working on dim days and in the evenings, t overhead lighting that doesnt cast any shadows over your working area track lighting, spots inset into the ceiling and wall lamps are all options. Desk lamps should ideally be adjustable. Alternatively, consider wiring one or two adjustable lamps into the wall above your desk.

Fabulous furnitureConventional offi ce furnishings are great for effi ciency, but tend to look out of place in a home. While ensuring that your desk and chair are comfortable, seek out furnishings that suit your

home and your personality. Plenty of chain stores and independent shops sell home offi ce furniture at a range of prices, but you could also consider hunting around junk shops, second-hand offi ce furniture stores and salvage yards for interesting alternatives, such as old school lockers, a trestle resting on a pair of metal ling cabinets, a distressed kitchen unit or a desktop made from blackboard. Add functional accessories that will brighten up your day, such as colourful waste bins or funky pen holders, and some nishing touches, such as plants, pictures and scented candles that will make this a space where you really want to spend time.

Shared spacesIf your offi ce space is shared with your dining room, kitchen, bedroom or living room, you will probably want to conceal it as much as possible when its not in use. Build a large cupboard in a recess next to a chimneybreast, for example, and behind the doors you should be able to squeeze in a desk with some shelving above. In a kitchen you might consider removing a unit. That said, think carefully about whether the rooms two purposes will con ict if you need to work with the children running around, or when a partner wants to sleep, its going to be a problem. You might be better off converting the loft, or tting an offi ce under the stairs, on a large landing or even in the garden shed.

  • The changes to life that retirement brings can be quite a shock, even if you have been looking forward to it. Losing the focus of going to work each day can be hard and it is easy to slip into a sedentary lifestyle. But research shows that those who keep active both physically and mentally enjoy a healthier later life. So what can you do?

The bene ts of activityRegular exercise has a huge number of bene ts: it strengthens your muscles, aiding mobility and reducing the risk of falls and conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and osteoporosis (brittle bones). It also helps to reduce the risk of other conditions, such as diabetes and stroke. It improves coordination and balance and encourages a healthy appetite, regular bowel movements and means you are more likely to sleep well at night. It also stimulates the brain, so that youre less likely to suff er from stress or depression.

Small amounts of regular exercise or activity is better for you than a big burst of energy one day and then nothing for the rest of the week. And exercise doesnt have to mean going to the gym - there is plenty you can do at home and while youre out and about to keep active.

At home you can tackle the garden - just a little weeding or pruning is using your muscles and keeping them exible; and even housework is great for strengthening muscles. Try an exercise DVD at home - and ask a friend to join you to make it more fun. Walk as much as you can each day - to the local shops or library and take up some social activities that will encourage you to meet other people as well as

exercise, such as dance or arts & craft classes; or keep t for the over 50s. And, if you have lots of energy, you could even try Zumba, which is fast-paced and fun. All these activities will keep your muscles moving and supple.

Age UK (formerly Age Concern) has a nationwide programme, Fit as a Fiddle, which supports people over 50 with physical activity, healthy eating and mental wellbeing. Find out more at www. tasa ddle.org.uk

Keeping mentally stimulatedStudies show that the more you use your brain the more mentally active youll remain. As well as slowing down memory loss (although youre still likely to forget things!), you can also reduce the chances of conditions such as Alzheimers. As with physical exercise, keeping mentally active can also help to reduce stress and depression.

There are many activities that can help to keep your brain mentally agile. At home you can tackle crossword puzzles, Sudoku or chess. Maybe now is the time to start reading all those books you never had time for when you were working? It is also possible to train your mind by using trigger words to jog your memory. Using sticky notes on the fridge will help to remind you of what you need to do that day.

Joining groups with common interests will encourage you to meet and interact with new people as well as keeping your mind occupied. Try bingo; learn a new language or how to use a computer; or enrol on a cookery course.

Your local council or library will have information on classes and activities for older people - just take your pick!

  • A few days ago I received a telephone call from a worried customer: her laptop had stopped working and when she started it up, she got an ominous Disk not found error message. She had taken it to a

large well known PC chain and they had quoted her 300 to replace the motherboard...

My clients are often worried about what it might cost to get their computer fi xed, but more often, they are concerned about losing their valuable photos, music collection or work emails. Its not until they realise these may be lost, that they start thinking about what they should have done to protect them.

One of the fi rst questions I ask is: Do you have a backup? and Im no longer surprised when they answer that its something they have been meaning to get around to. Its understandable that in our busy lives, we take our computer for granted. So its only when it goes wrong, gets stolen or it gets soaked in Ribena (yes it happened!) that we realise how vulnerable our precious data really is. Its important to remember that computers can and do go wrong. Despite the tremendous value of technology, its not the same as storing your photos in a trusty old fashioned fi ling cabinet!

...back to the story. This kind of call is all in a days work for me - in my job, you have to develop a kind of desk-side manner and be very reassuring. I went to the ladys offi ce to take a look, and to give her a free diagnosis. Over the years, I have developed very quick but eff ective ways of identifying the likely causes of the most common computer problems. Within 15 minutes I was able to give her the good news that it was a software problem, and it would only take me about 20 minutes to fi x it there and then for 25. Of course she was delighted, particularly as I was also able to setup a simple but reliable backup system for her with some of the money she had saved!

If you would like a free diagnosis of a computer problem, or would like to get that all important back-up system in place, then call Steve at Ashford Computer Solutions. Were always happy to help!

If you need any computer security advice, Steve Newman of Ashford Computer Solutions can be contacted on 01233 469217.

A daughter says to her ageing father, its taken you eighty years But you have fi nally learnt to put your hand In front of your face when you

sneeze,Of course i do says the old man, how else can i catch my teeth.

The Magical Bank Imagine that you had won the following prize in a contest:

Each morning your bank would deposit 86,400.00 in your private account for your use. However, this prize had rules, just as any game has certain rules. The fi rst set of rules would be:

    1. Everything that you didnt spend during each day would be taken away from you.

    2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account.

    3. You may only spend it.

Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another 86,400.00 for that day.

    The second set of rules:

    1. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, Its over, the game is over!

    2. It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.

    What would you personally do?

You would buy anything and everything you wanted, right? Not only for yourself, but for all people you love, right? Even for people you dont know, because you couldnt possibly spend it all on yourself, right? You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, right?

    ACTUALLY, THIS GAME IS REALITY!

Each of us is in possession of such a magical bank. We just cant seem to see it. THE MAGICAL BANK IS TIME! Each awakening morning we receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life, and when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is NOT credited to us. What we havent lived up that day is forever lost. Yesterday is forever gone. Each morning the account is refi lled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time... WITHOUT WARNING.

WELL, what will you do with your 86,400 seconds?

Arent they worth so much more than the same amount in pounds? Think about that, and always think of this:

Enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think.

So take care of yourself, and enjoy life!
