Purpose of Common Standards

To improve U.S. educational attainment by focusing schools on higher learning goalsTo standardize educational opportunityTo focus attention on fewer, higher, better standards (more on outcomes than on processes)2What Makes These Standards Special?Independent analysis indicates that they are more rigorous/demanding than the standards of 37 StatesInternationally benchmarkedInclude all grades (K-12) and emphasize disciplinary literacyIncreased stress on expository text, critical reading, and use of technologyRecognizes importance of text difficulty and the value of canonical text

NGSSS only goes to grade 10

Text difficulty considers the reading level, the vocabulary as well as the concepts(comprehension) suggested by the text. Site the To Kill a Mockingbird example lexile-4th or 5th grade. However the concepts are appropriate for 8th grade or high school.
