With the deadline for applications hav-ing closed on November 30, the FIVB announced that eight countries ap-plied to host the 2011 editions of the FIVB Junior and Youth World Champi-onships.

Applications from the national federa-tions of Iran and Brazil have been re-ceived at the FIVB head office in Switzer-land to host the FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship in Tehran and Niteroi and Rio de Janeiro respectively, while Lima, Peru is in contention to host the FIVB Women’s Junior World Championships. The FIVB Boy’s Youth World Champion-ship has one hosting candidate in Cairo, Egypt while Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Mexicali or Tijuana, Mexico and Ankara, Turkey Volleyball Federations are candi-dates to host the FIVB Girl’s Youth World Championship.

A decision on the host countries of each of the events will be announced by the end of February.

Last year’s FIVB Men’s Junior Volleyball World Championship was held in Pune, India

MEN & WOMEN

Strong interest to host fiVB age group tournaments

The biannual FIVB age group events were held in 2009 in Pune, India (Men’s Junior), Baja California, Mexico (Women’s Junior),

In one of the busiest FIVB calendars on record, an historic number of nations (95 for women and 105 for men) partici-pated in the year-long FIVB World Cham-pionships 2010 qualifying process, with 44 teams joining hosts Japan and Italy plus Russia and Brazil in the final round of the FIVB World Championships.

Other key highlights included the Brazil-ian men’s team claiming a record equal-ing (with Italy) eighth FIVB World League title in July after beating hosts Serbia in the final. Brazil won the incredible match 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12), with Sergio claiming the Most Valuable Player award in the process.

August saw the FIVB World Grand Prix take place with the Brazilian women’s team remaining unbeaten in the com-petitive round-robin final round in Japan to secure their eighth title and second in-a-row, beating Japan 3-1 in the final match in Tokyo. Russia secured the silver medal, sweeping aside the Netherlands easily in their final match. The surprise package of the tournament was Ger-many who, ranked 12th in the world, clinched third place after beating an off-form China in their final match.

November’s FIVB Grand Champions Cup was also deemed a great success again, having taken place in Japan. In the men’s edition, Brazil swept all comers aside re-maining unbeaten throughout the tour-

nament to successfully defend their title the first time in the tournament’s histo-ry. It is the third time the Brazilians have walked away with the Grand Champions Cup gold medal (2005 and 1997.)

Elsewhere Japan recorded its best result in the competition since 1977 with vic-

tories over Iran, Egypt and Poland secur-ing a third place finish.

In the women’s edition, 2007 World Cup champions Italy were victorious on their debut in the competition beating Japan in their final match 3-1 (32-30, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18).

The Dominican Republic recorded their best ever ranking in an FIVB tournament finishing third.

In another key development, Volleyball fans welcomed back after 17 years the re-turn of the FIVB Men’s Club World Volley-ball Championship in Doha, Qatar in No-vember, and for the fifth time in a row, the title returned back to Italy, with Trentino BetClic reigning supreme. The north Italian outfit defeated Polish side Skra Belchatow 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-19) in the final.

Serbia, Germany and Brazil shared the four Junior and Youth Volleyball World Championships. Brazil was victorious in the 2009 FIVB Men’s Junior World Volley-ball Championship in Pune, India, whilst the Brazilian girls took home the 2009 FIVB Girl’s Youth World Volleyball Cham-pionship in Nakhonratchasima, Thailand. Serbia meanwhile claimed their first 2009 FIVB Boy’s Youth World Volleyball Championship in Jesolo, Italy, whilst Ger-many won the 2009 FIVB Women’s Junior World Volleyball Championship in Baja California, Mexico.

Trentino kept the FIVB World Club Championship title in Italy, winning the competition in Doha, Qatar in December

At the end of the season, Harley, Schuil and Juliana captured the top honours as the SWATCH most outstanding players for the 2009 season. International Beach Volleyball players will be further rewarded for their out-standing commitment to the SWATCH FIVB World Tour following a decision by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Executive Committee to increase Bonus Pool payments, rewarding ath-letes` participation in SWATCH FIVB World Tour events. The decision, made at the last FIVB Ex-ecutive Committee meeting held on November 25 in Tokyo, Japan, affects, not only the 2010 season but will also be applied retroactively to the 2009 season. “Players who participate in more events, supporting growth in the sport and

Kenya secure Japanese coach

Kenya received a major boost ahead of the FIVB 2010 Women’s World Cham-pionship in Japan later this year, secur-ing the service of experienced Japa-nese coach Hidehiro Irisawa, who will take charge of Kenya’s preparations and potential qualification for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.Hidehiro, seconded to Kenya through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is contracted for one year and depending on his perform-ance in Singapore, he could poten-tially be allowed to head the coun-try’s senior women’s team to the FIVB World Championship in Japan where Kenya are grouped with Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico and the Czech Republic in Pool B.
