World Culture Latin American Facts

Latin America cultures are drawn from diverse traditions and rich, sometimes volatile, history. The cultures are originated from the native peoples that inhabited the continents prior to the arrival of the Europeans: European cultures such as Spanish, Portuguese, and French; African cultures, whose presence comes from a long history of New World slavery; and the United States, particularly via mass media such as cinema and television.

• Of the 11 Spanish language Nobel Literature Prize winners, 6 have been from Latin America. • The two Latin American painters to break sale records at Sothebys have been Mexicans, Diego Rivera and Frida

Kahlo. • Latin America has one of the richest traditions of protest music

ranging from Brazilian bossa nova (which wasn't just about the Girl from Ipanema, it served to challenge the military dictatorship in the 1960s & 1970s) to the Nueva Cancion (which wanted to give voice to the voiceless and was best exemplified by Argentine Mercedes Sosa).
