rnoNfrOF Tsx This County is bounded on the north by Renfrew, on the south

by the River St. Lawrence, on the east by Lanark and Leeds, on the west by Hastings, and on the south-west by Lennox. It consists of the Townships of Barrie, Bedford, Clarendon & Miller, Hinchinbrooke, Howe Island, Kennebec, Kingston, Loughboro, Olden, Oso, Palmers-ton and North and South Canonto, Pittsburg, Portland, Storrington, Wolfe Island, and the incorporated Villages of Portsmouth and Garden Island.

The County of Frontenac was named after the founder of the first settlement in Upper Canada, Count de Frontenac, wl built a fort on the banks of the Cataraqui in July, 1678.

In 1674 De la Salle obtained from Louis XIV., King of France, the fort and four leagues of land along the border of Lake Frontenac (Ontario), the two islands in front, and the interjacent islands. On the 27th of August, 1758, Colonel Bradstreet took possession, and from that date commenced the British rule. In 1874 the U. E. Loyalists commenced to settle in this County. Théllist settler was Captain Grass, who took up land in Kingston Township. After the war of 1812 Sir John Johnson selected the shores of the Bay of Quinte and vicinity for discharged soldiers and others, who settled here in large numbers. The County includes every variety of land, and is rich in minerais. The back townships are now open for settle-ment, and, with the extension of the Kingston and Pembroke Railway, the CountY will in the course ol a few years have a much larger population thau at present. Number of acres about 600,000; popu-lation about 16,000.
