Welcome!

This workbook has been designed to support your learning within the workplace

and to provide you with an opportunity to reflect on your learning, a reminder for

top tips, skills and knowledge you have gained along the way for your day-to-day

role.

It has been written to assist you and should not be relied upon to complete the

qualification.

Your Assessor will be reviewing the workbook. It can be used as part of the

assessment process towards the units within your qualification, however, the key

assessments taking place will be your Assessor observing you in your job to ensure

you can and are applying the appropriate and relevant knowledge within your

role.

You may also be asked to elaborate on the answers you have provided in the

workbook through discussion with your Assessor, and you could also be asked to

provide further supporting evidence at the end of an observation to ensure you

meet the full criteria of the qualification.

To ensure you meet the criteria of the qualification please answer the questions

fully, providing as much evidence from your own role and workplace to support

the answers you have given.

Additional notes pages have been allocated at the back of the workbook, enabling

you to make notes when you have experienced a particular situation or found

something that works well from the learning you have completed.

Your Assessor will be providing you with feedback at the end of your observations.

Use this feedback as part of your review and reflect elements in the workbook.

Your Assessor will provide you with some guidance about how long each individual

activity and task in this workbook should take. You will be responsible for

discussing timelines/deadlines and ensuring that you meet them- don’t forget to

take your work and personal life commitments into consideration when planning.

What is your understanding of health and safety in the workplace?

In the first workbook you have covered some areas concerning your company regulations

and your role and responsibilities. During this workbook, you are going to build on that

knowledge and further develop your skills.

We are going to look at how you work within the business environment and how it can

impact on you, your colleagues, your company and your customers

Getting hurt at work is not a pleasant subject to think about. The reality is that 300

people lose their lives at work in Britain every year. In addition, around 158,000 non-

fatal injuries are reported each year, and an estimated 2.2 million suffer from ill health

caused or made worse by work. The mistake is to believe that these things happen in

unusual circumstances that never occur in your workplace. This is not the case. Some

basic thinking and acting beforehand could help you become aware of some of the

risks in your workplace and help you to avoid them. (source: www.hse.gov.uk)

Describe the types of visitors you have and their reason for visiting your company

In the first workbook you were asked to identify your company’s policies for situations such as

reporting accidents and what to do in the event of a fire.

Understanding the policies and procedures your company is required to follow or has chosen to

create is important for all roles within the business, whilst it’s equally as important to understand

who exactly is protected by them.

2.1 – Design a Welcome Pack for your company

PROJECT – How well do you know and understand your company policies and

procedures?

Project Aim: To create a formal company ‘Welcome Pack’ demonstrating your knowledge

and understanding of your company’s processes and procedures for welcoming and

receiving visitors and staff to the building. The project will also provide you with the

opportunity to use key skill sets required for your role and the qualification.

Project Instructions:

Create a professional, formal ‘Welcome Pack’ to your company and the building you work in to showcase

your knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures your company have to comply to by

law and also have created in order to ensure a minimum standard is maintained. Create your ‘Welcome

Pack’ using answers from the activities you have completed to date and knowledge you have. Consider

the information you select to showcase your knowledge, think about first aid, fire safety etc as well as

how you will create the pack e.g. your chosen method of communication and resources you will

use/create. Be prepared for a Question & Answer session with your Assessor, once they have reviewed

your pack.

Timelines

• You are to discuss and negotiate with your Assessor a suitable deadline for this project.

• Take into consideration your current workload and personal commitments outside of work.

• Consider how much time you will need to complete the research, plan, prepare and create the

‘Welcome Pack’.

Preparation and Planning

• You will be expected to show all of your preparation for this project, please ensure you use the

‘Make a Note’ pages at the back of the work book and if you require more, please ask your

Assessor.

• On completion of activities, research and questions, you are to prepare the ‘Welcome Pack’ in the

most appropriate method for your working environment e.g. if you don't have access to MS

Publisher or colour printing don’t attempt to prepare a glossy document.

Evidence and Monitoring

• You must keep all evidence of research completed for the project e.g. any emails you have

written/received concerning the research & questions and who (colleagues/management) you

have approached for support with the project.

• All evidence provided will be used to support your knowledge and understanding as well as help

you to meet other learning outcomes within this qualification, information provided by your

Assessor.

Completion and Review

• On completion of the project, reflect on how you prepared and completed it, how you prioritised

the project around your day-to-day work and personal commitments, did you meet the deadline

you had initially agreed with your Assessor?

• Consider: What went well, what needed improvement, compare how you felt to feedback from

your Assessor.

• Identify key personal learning outcomes and challenges faced while completing the project.

• Did you go to others in your company/team for support? If so, how did you handle gaining help

from your colleagues/management?

2.2 - Working Safely within your workplace

Think about all the work areas in your work place and identify the duties and tasks that you

complete daily in and around those areas.

Consider what you have just completed in the last project, what you have learnt about health and

safety in the work place from your role and the qualification so far.

You are going to spend some time focusing on where you work, your role and responsibilities for

the environment, how you work within the environment and the impact on your colleagues,

customers and employer.

Data for 2010/11 shows:

About two million working days were lost due to handling injuries and slips and trips. (Source: www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/causinj/kinds-of-accident.htm)

Page 24: Workbook 2 - Working safely in a business environment workbook 2... · Workbook 2 – Working safely in a business environment ... Welcome! This workbook has been designed to support

What could become potential health & safety hazards in those areas, if appropriate behaviours and

procedures aren’t applied?

Page 25: Workbook 2 - Working safely in a business environment workbook 2... · Workbook 2 – Working safely in a business environment ... Welcome! This workbook has been designed to support

Who would you report any health and safety hazards/risks to?
