Welcome to Work-based Learning DirectoryWork-based Learning Directory is a guide to the range of non-employed pre-Apprenticeship training opportunities available to young people in Tyne and Wear who might not be ready to start a full Apprenticeship programme.

You can find out which sectors each provider offers courses in by consulting the Occupational areas covered grid.

Each provider's page has contact details, information about how to apply and an indication of the pre-Apprenticeship or foundation training offered. Providers are grouped by Local Authority area. Please check out of area providers as they often recruit across Tyne and Wear.

ALD is an independent training academy based on Gateshead High Street, providing courses in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Barbering at all levels. The Academy has easy access for Metro links and bus routes and offers courses from pre-16 through to adult learning courses.

Weekly bursary and course funding may apply. Fully qualified and experienced staff with over 25 years industry experience will guide students through their courses to reach their full potential. Students are helped and supported to prepare them for employment.

ALD also provide additional courses to meet current trends, such as spray tanning, hair extensions, etc.

Rathbone Training currently provides a Military Preparation course aimed at young people who have an interest in joining the Armed Forces. Students will study towards a Level 1 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services and Functional Skills in English and maths, if these have not yet been achieved. Rathbone are also offering Entry 3 and Level 1 qualifications in Sport and Active Leisure and a Level 2 Diploma in Sport; and Functional Skills in English and maths. This is run in conjunction with Newcastle Falcons and delivered from Kingston Park in Newcastle.

Sage Gateshead (North Music Trust) is committed to supporting the development of everyone interested in the arts. Sage Gateshead seriously considers any appropriate requests for work experience or volunteer opportunities. A work or volunteer placement can be a valuable way to gain an insight into and, where possible, some real hands on experience of the Creative Industries. Sage Gateshead currently offer placements and volunteering opportunities to GCSE and A Level students, looked after children and young people, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, members of the general public, young people and adults with learning and/or physical disability.

TCV Employment and Training Services offer individually tailored programmes to 16-18 year olds who are not in education, training or employment. Young people can choose from a wide range of vocational qualifications to study alongside Functional Skills and will have the opportunity to gain some hands on experience in a work placement. Courses are not like school and help in the form of one to one sessions or small groups is offered. Courses can be part-time or full-time depending on the qualifications and experience the young person chooses.

Capital 4 Training are based in Newcastle and offer a wide range of work-based learning, Traineeships and vocationally focused short courses.

CSV provides study programmes (for 16-18 year olds), Apprenticeships and other vocational training and Functional Skills courses helping to develop the skills, attitudes and confidence of trainees for work and well-being.

CSV works with young people, adults, young mothers, people in the care system, people with learning difficulties and people with ESOL needs to help them develop new and existing skills, gain accredited qualifications, build confidence, self-esteem, pastoral support and offer a wide range of work experience opportunities.

The Learn To Work study programme helps 16-18 year old learners complete and improve qualifications up to Levels 1 and 2, as well as get work experience. CSV also specialise in working with ESOL learners as part of this programme.

CSV also offers Apprenticeships and the CSV Works programme, which gives learners 19+ the opportunity to improve their Maths and English, gain a CSCS card and Asbestos Awareness Certificate for progression in the construction industry (learners must be in receipt of unemployment benefit).

ID Training delivers Apprenticeships and pre-employment courses in health and social care, business and administration, customer service, team leading, management and children and young people’s services.

The Personalised Learning Programme offers a personalised full time learning programme leading to vocational qualifications at different levels in Health and Social Care, Childcare, Business Admin or Customer Service. The programme provides the opportunity to apply for a two week supported European work placement to give young people the chance to widen their horizons, develop confidence and gain a positive outlook on their future career prospects.

Applicants should be 16-19 year olds, be prepared to travel, be able to attend full time for 1-2 years and want to meet new people and develop confidence. Bursaries are available for students to assist with travel and other expenses.

Rolls-Royce North East Training Centre is an approved training provider offering pre-Apprenticeships, designed to move young people into full Apprenticeships. The course is for unemployed 16-18 year olds who have achieved GCSE grade C or higher in Maths, English and Science. The practical skills areas include: mechanical, fabrication, electrical and general engineering. The training centre is located within Rolls-Royce, Newcastle, part of the Marine Division of Rolls-Royce.

Northumbria Youth Action provides motor vehicle training at Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 as well as Apprenticeships in light motor vehicle maintenance and vehicle parts. Training in Functional Skills and Employability are included in all full time courses. Most courses last at least one year. Learners start their courses working in NYA’s own fully operational garage and progress onto placements with reputable dealerships.

TyneMet is the top performing college for young people offering a wide range of vocationally focused short courses in partnership with local employers.

The Pre-Apprentice Course is designed for people aged 19-24 and aims to move you into Apprenticeships across a broad range of sectors. This course will equip you with everything you need to support successful application to Apprenticeships and could lead to interviews with local employers.

The course takes place on a rolling basis every two weeks at TyneMet College’s Coast Road Campus in Wallsend, between 10am-3pm, Monday-Friday.

TyneMet also offer a three day intensive sustaining employment course on successful completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship course which can lead to an employer interview. This takes place monthly between 10am-3pm, Monday- Wednesday (dates available on request).

All courses are free for individuals currently out of work.

Springboard is one of the largest and longest established training providers in the North East with premises and facilities across Sunderland, South Tyneside, East Durham and Hartlepool.

Springboard South Tyneside provide work-based learning opportunities through the Study Programme, Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships in the vocational areas detailed below as well as support with Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT following assessment. TCV Employment and Training Services offer individually tailored programmes to 16-18 year olds who are not in education, training or employment. Young people can choose from a wide range of vocational qualifications to study alongside Functional Skills and will have the opportunity to gain some hands on experience in a work placement. Courses are not like school and help in the form of one to one sessions or small groups is offered. Courses can be part-time or full-time depending on the qualifications and experience the young person chooses.
