4 SUCCESS STORIES 2013 BusinessWomanPA.com

We are excited to share the stories of some very dynamic women in this year’s edition of

Success Stories. These businesswomen have achieved professional successes in their careers

through hard work and often extending themselves beyond what they may have once thought

possible.

Whether they are self-employed entrepreneurs, business owners, or dedicated employees

who have found a career path they love in the corporate or nonprofit world, each of these

women hopes to inspire you to achieve your professional goals and dreams.

Laurell K. Hamilton, author of the Vampire Hunter series, said, “Successful people are always

looking for opportunities to help others.” Success Stories offers these women an opportunity to

help others though their inspiration while establishing their personal brand in the process.

Learn how you can become better at personal branding by reading the article on page 11.

Notice that some of the women have earned the WBE certification, which may open doors

you hadn’t thought of or did not have access to previously. We’ve included information about

this certification on page 18 so that you may consider it.

Success Stories is an extension of BusinessWoman magazine, which is an award-winning

publication in print in Central Pennsylvania and online … so you can read it anywhere, anytime.

I have always thought it important to be of service to my community and have volunteered

with many organizations over the years. In 1995 I wanted to take the next step by offering the

50+ population information that would be specifically relevant to them.

What began as a one-county senior publication has become a diverse line of publications

and events focused specifically on the needs and interests of boomers and seniors. We have

gone from one edition of 50plus Senior News to publishing editions in print and online in six

counties, as well as BusinessWoman magazine, b magazine, 50plus Living and many other

specialty publications and events.

Through the combined efforts of a competent, creative, and engaged staff, we have brought

more than 90 50plus EXPOs, PowerLunches, PA STATE Senior Idol competitions, and women’s

expos to the region.

I have been fortunate to have benefitted from the wisdom of men and women who took the

time to offer suggestions and advice along the way. I, in turn, have enjoyed helping women in

any way I can and take pleasure in seeing their successes.

You can’t but be inspired by these women. Perhaps next year you will consider being

included so others may benefit from your experiences.

About This Publication

The following designations appear in this publication:

: Designates those businesses that are majority woman-owned (51–100%). Because agents

and independent representatives are virtually self-employed, they also may have this designation.

This designation is for informational purposes only and does not constitute any type of certification.

WBE: Designates those entities that have earned the Women’s Business Enterprise certification.

The certification assists women in obtaining contracts available to them through federal, state, or

local governments. A certain percentage of government projects are designed for women- and

minority-owned firms and are required to actively seek out certified WBEs when purchasing

opportunities arise.

All profiles and advertisements have been accepted for publication on the assumption that the

information contained in them is true and accurate and that all products or services offered in the

advertisement are available to the customer according to the conditions warranted therein.

Barry Bruce & Company celebrates its 25th anniversary in

2013—and with that celebration, a new name: Hall Media

Solutions.

Dawn Hall, president and CEO, began working for the company

in March 1997 as a part-time receptionist. As other employees

moved on to other careers, Hall began handling their

responsibilities.

Her passion and determination to learn everything she could

about the advertising agency business quickly earned her the

promotion to media director, then vice president—and now,

president and CEO.

Founded in 1988 as Barry Bruce & Company, Inc., Hall Media

Solutions is a full-service, award-winning advertising agency with

special expertise in all aspects of television and radio, from media

research and production to strategic planning and rate

negotiations.

As a full-service agency, the company is also actively involved

with direct mail, corporate logo design, corporate reports,

newspaper and magazine advertising, co-op and vendor

campaigns, and billboards.

“We will always continue to honor founder Barry Bruce, my

mentor, as we move forward,” Hall said. “While our name is

changing, everything that we represent and stand for will remain

the same—our commitment, loyalty, and dedication to our clients

will not waiver.”

Dawn and her fellow staff members at Hall Media Solutions are

strong believers in common sense and practicality. They strive to

be “user-friendly,” serving their clientele on an “a la carte” basis that

focuses on their clients’ particular needs, not theirs.

Dawn’s clients ultimately reap the benefits of the company’s

experience and expertise with substantially lower spot costs,

preferred spot placement, etc.

“In the overwhelming majority of cases, the money we save our

clients during the media-buying process greatly exceeds our

professional fees,” she noted.

It has been company philosophy and objective from day one to

become “partners” with clients, with a strong and loyal

commitment to their success. Hall Media Solutions accepts clients

selectively, collaborating with them as partners in developing

successful advertising and media campaigns.

Dawn and all the employees at Hall Media Solutions take pride

in maintaining their clients and enjoy an average client

relationship in excess of 15 years.

“The company has stood on strong values of innovation,

ingenuity, and integrity for more than 20 years, and that is

something that will never change,” said Dawn. “Our clients’ success

is our success, and our dedication and service to our clients is

second to none.”

Barb Culton

Barb Culton began her now 36-year career in the

environmental field at an army tank factory; it was while working

there that she added a wastewater license to her science and

biology degree, which she had earned from Clarion University and

The University of Pittsburgh. It was 10 years ago this January that

Barb came to Kline’s as its environmental compliance officer.

In addition to ensuring all Kline’s operations are in compliance

with government regulations, Barb oversees numerous projects

that convert waste into beneficial reuse, such as transforming food

waste into electrical power—in fact, Kline’s creates enough

electricity to support itself and 450 homes. Barb was part of the

Kline’s team that presented its work at the 2012 BioCycle

Conference in St. Louis, Mo.

Barb’s environmental focus also extends to her personal

commitments, which include many 5K benefit runs and hikes with

proceeds benefiting community environmental needs.

Carley Smith

For Carley Smith, safety director at Kline’s, her job boils down to

one basic virtue: every day, she helps bring employees home

safely to their families.

Smith, a native of Bethlehem, Pa., earned a bachelor’s degree in

occupational safety and hygiene management from Millersville

University. After working in the safety field for more than a

decade, Smith came to Kline’s after having her third child, realizing

she could benefit from the company’s flexible scheduling, “family

feel,” and trust in her abilities.

Those abilities include implementing and upgrading safety and

training programs and working closely with Kline’s employees,

teaching safer ways to complete their tasks and new concepts that

help workers do their jobs more efficiently and safely. She is a

member of the Lancaster Chamber Workers Compensation

Advisory Group and the ABC Keystone Safety Committee.

Nancy Zigment

Originally from Chicago, Nancy Zigment’s family moved to

Lancaster when she was a child. The daughter of an experimental,

forward-thinking father, Nancy was encouraged to follow her

creative talents into the workforce.

After moving about the country for 20 years in a variety of

executive positions, Nancy returned to Lancaster and accepted the

marketing coordinator position at Kline’s. There, she has

responsibilities ranging from event planning to all things public

relations. Not just a septic company, Kline’s is also a leader in

renewable energy, and Nancy is passionate about this practice of

environmental stewardship.

An independent problem-solver who “can’t imagine anything”

she’d rather be doing, Nancy serves as a mentor in the Lancaster

Chamber of Commerce’s business mentorship program and has

been active in numerous nonprofit organizations in the

community.

Sadiya Cheshty, MD, a board-certified gastroenterologist with

Regional Gastroenterology Associates of Lancaster (RGAL),

understands the challenges of women’s digestive health. With this

in mind, she is excited to serve as medical director for RGAL’s new

Women’s Digestive Health Center.

The center is part of the Women’s Specialty Center at Women &

Babies Hospital, which includes healthcare services provided by

female specialists in cardiology, behavioral counseling, and

digestive health. The center is the only one in the region staffed

entirely by women specializing in women’s health needs.

Board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine,

Sadiya earned her medical degree at the State University of New

York Downstate School of Medicine and completed her medical

residency at North Shore University Hospital – New York University

School of Medicine.

Sadiya and her husband moved to the Lancaster area after she

completed her fellowship training in gastroenterology,

hepatology, and nutrition at Loyola University Medical Center –

Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago.

“I really love it here; it’s definitely a good place to live,” Sadiya

said. “We have very good medical facilities, the best in every

specialty. I’ve been very impressed with the level of medical care

that is available in Lancaster and the wonderful resources.”

And now, the Women’s Digestive Health Center will serve as

one more of those local resources, one that takes a proactive

approach with prevention and uses unique screening measures

designed especially for women.

“Digestive disorders uniquely affect women, and there’s a

whole array of disruptions to the GI tract that can really interfere

with women’s lives,” said Sadiya.

In fact, research indicates that gastrointestinal distress is more

than twice as common in women as in men and that females have

a greater incidence of complicating factors than men. Digestive

disorders such as reflux, constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating

can disrupt and interfere with the daily activities and quality of life

of many women.

For the future, Sadiya’s main goal is to encourage women to be

proactive, to feel empowered, and to take control of their

digestive health.

“For the most part, women can be very reluctant to discuss

their GI issues,” she said. “Women are very good about getting

mammograms, but statistically speaking, they’re not very good

about getting colonoscopies.

“I love my work,” Sadiya continued. “I absolutely love working

with patients, and I get to work in the areas in GI that I’m

passionate about.”

Business, is the president of Strategic Consulting Partners (SCP).

She is known for her ability to run a business from soup to nuts.

Over the past 18 years, Monica’s expertise and versatility has taken

her to the top of the management-consulting field.

Monica has 28 years of business experience, including 10 years

in executive management roles at MCI Telecommunications

Corporation and the Whirlpool Corporation. After many years of

great success in the corporate world, the long hours and extensive

travel infringed upon her family life. Although she thrived

professionally, her family and two young daughters were her top

priority. In 1994, Monica decided to parlay her business expertise

into her own consulting practice.

Monica has extensive experience in all aspects of business and

displays cutting-edge leadership skills and substantial financial

management and strategic planning experience for small to

multimillion-dollar operations. She successfully manages an array

of projects, from strategic planning, organizational development,

and operational reengineering to leadership development for

diverse corporations, organizations, and government entities.

She is a Certified Management Consultant through the

Institute of Management Consultants. Less than 1 percent of

consultants have achieved this designation. Monica is also a

professional member of the National Speakers Association.

Over the past five years, Monica has grown her business in

both Pennsylvania and the federal government. Recently, Strategic

Consulting Partners won two exciting federal government

contracts with the Department of Transportation and the Defense

Logistics Agency. Her company is a Certified Minority and Women-

Owned Business Enterprise and is both a federally certified SBA

8(a) and EDWOSB firm.

Monica’s passion for making a difference in her community

sparked the growth of SCP’s nonprofit business division, which has

worked closely with hundreds of regional nonprofit entities.

Monica is a PANO Certified Consultant and Trainer.

Not only is Monica a successful businesswoman, but she is also

an active member in her community. She volunteers with a dozen

local organizations, including the board and recent past

presidency of the Mechanicsburg Chamber of Commerce and

board vice chair for Big Brothers and Big Sisters, where she will be

chair in July 2013.

Over the past 25 years, Monica has been awarded many

business and community service awards, including but not limited

to 2009 Best 50 Women in Business, 2009 MS Leadership Award,

BusinessWomanPA.com SUCCESS STORIES 2013 11

In these times when each of us is a knowledge worker and

global economies are in turmoil, if we want to have greater

control over our careers, it’s critical that we define our personal

brands.

I often work with my executive coaching clients to help them

create their personal leadership brand. They identify purpose, the

strengths they bring, and their core values. The stumbling block

that we come to often is, “You mean I have to actually promote

myself? That just feels so fake!”

For a lot of us, it’s easy to brag about others or fight for a

cause we believe in. Promoting ourselves is tougher, so we don’t

do it. Yet, having a great personal brand without marketing it is

sort of like if Apple designed a great product and no one knew

about it. Like product brands, personal brands create great value

for us when we market them well.

So here are five steps to market your personal brand,

applying some of the principles I used as a former chief

marketing officer.

Reframe “Promoting Yourself” to “SharingYourself.”

As women, we usually have no problem sharing

ourselves (our interests, our backgrounds) with

others. For this to be a successful marketing plan, we

need to shift our own mindsets.

We can say, “I’m the best marketing guru on

personal brands you will find” (self-promotion). If

that feels inauthentic to say, it won’t work because

you don’t believe in it. Or we can say, “I’m passionate

about helping leaders create and market their

personal brands. My clients see huge impact when

they create and action their brand” (self-sharing).

When we share ourselves and believe in our

message, it’s more credible to the audience.

Create YourElevator Pitch.

Time is a premium on TV, social media, and in our

lives. TV time is most often sold in 15- and 30-second

slots, and Twitter gives us 140 characters to express

ourselves. So write down what you can say in 15-30

seconds that represents your brand, and then

practice saying it out loud.

Here are some examples of what different clients

have created for themselves.

CEO of private equity company: “I am passionate

about finding the hidden potential in people and

businesses and then challenging ourselves to deliver it.”

Senior-level marketing officer: “I love being a

catalyst for ideas that transform organizations and

create new paradigms.”

Engage YourTarget Audience.

Just like any advertising, we want to be really

clear about the people we want to share our

message with. We want to include anyone we want

to influence: key stakeholders in our organization,

our boss, peers, sponsors, the people that work for

us. The list could include people on your personal

board of directors, mentors, and clients.

We want them to understand our message and

be advocates for it. Think of them as your social

media fans and followers. We want to engage them

by sharing our personal brand and also asking for

their feedback.

Pick the Right Occasions to ShareYour Message.

The fast-food people got this right. I’m watching

late-night TV and feeling a little rumble in my

stomach. Out pops an ad for a juicy hamburger all

smothered in mayonnaise, just like I like it!

In any advertising message, timing is critical.

Our message needs to arrive in time to influence

decisions. Talk with your target audience about

your personal brand when setting yearly objectives,

during mid-year and year-end reviews, in feedback

sessions, to influence new projects, and prior to

succession-planning discussions.

Share your personal brand on your resume, your

LinkedIn profile, in social media, or in targeted and

appropriate print venues.

Repeat YourMessage Consistently.

Research from my P&G days used to show that

any compelling message needs to be heard more

than three times before it sinks in (less compelling

messages need to be repeated many more times!).

Given all the advertising clutter, it’s probably

truer now than ever. This means that each of our

stakeholders needs to hear our message multiple

times. The clearer and more consistent we are, the

better we will be remembered when it’s time for

that stretch assignment or for that succession-

planning discussion.

Most importantly, remember that our actions

speak louder than our words. The most successful

brands deliver what they promise. So let’s keep our

personal brand front and center as we set our

intentions for meetings we participate in, our

interactions with others, and decisions we make.

Michelle knew she wanted to do something she loved for the rest of her

life. The art of photography was just that. After graduating from Manheim

Central High School, she attended Rhode Island School of Photography.

Wanting to return to her roots in Lancaster County, she was offered a job

at GeorJean Photography Studio. George and Jean took her under their

wings and taught her the industry. When Jean decided to retire, Michelle was

able to purchase the business, proving hard work pays off.

Michelle married her husband, Heath, and brought him into the business.

Keeping with the mom-and-pop atmosphere, they make a great team.

GeorJean Photography Studio photographs weddings, seniors in high

school, families, pets, corporate, location, commercial, and even has a photo

booth to rent.

Owning a home business was great for when she started her family. She

could be at work and walk down the hall to be with her kids.

Michelle has been in the photography business for more than 20 years

and has seen the industry change drastically. What keeps Michelle going is

her passion to provide quality portraits that capture that moment and will

later be looked upon with fond memories.

More than 14 years ago, Karen Gerth found her calling—sharing the

therapeutic benefits of her special dogs with residents of local retirement

communities. The residents’ reaction to her visits inspired her to encourage

others to become involved.

Heeding her pastor’s teachings—“find your passion, don’t be afraid, God

will help you do things you can’t even imagine”—Karen stepped out of her

comfort zone and formed KPETS in January 2003. This local nonprofit

organization is the community’s networking resource for pet therapy.

Today, KPETS has grown to more than 300 volunteer teams, providing joy,

comfort, encouragement, and rehabilitation to more than 200 facilities.

KPETS provides more than 8,000 volunteer hours annually to long-term care

facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, hospice programs, special needs

programs, schools, and more—all free of charge, surviving on public

donations and fundraising.

KPETS has countless success stories: the child who spoke for the first time

in a therapy session, a disabled child who was motivated to take her first

steps, and the man who, on his last day, reminded his wife to bring treats for

the dog that was to visit him.

KPETS – celebrating 10 years of “Touching Lives and Warming Hearts.”

Kathy George can attest to the power of professional women.

“That’s part of my success—networking with all the wonderful

businesswomen I’ve encountered over the years,” Kathy said.

As the owner of Cedar Cliff Subway in Camp Hill—and past owner of two

additional Subway franchises—Kathy reaps the benefits of interpersonal

interaction every day, whether it’s with fellow businesswomen, her

employees, or her customers.

When she relocated here in 2001, Kathy’s sales background made her a

good fit for the role of director of franchise sales for the Central Pennsylvania

Subway Development Office.

“Once I got into that side, of developing stores, I became interested in

becoming a franchisee,” she said. “I sold it to so many people, I sold it to

myself!”

Kathy is passionate about community involvement and volunteers with

Junior Achievement of South Central PA, visiting area classrooms to talk

about all the varied facets of owning a business; the Mechanicsburg

Chamber of Commerce; New Cumberland Olde Town Association; American

Business Women’s Association (she was their Woman of the Year in 2009);

Diversity Networking Group; Mechanicsburg Business Women’s Group; and

Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland and Perry Counties.

Marilyn Walker, president and CEO of synergize!, believes we each have

our own definition of success.

“My definition of success used to be what I had done—my

accomplishments.”

For Marilyn, they are numerous. She has “five great kids, all responsible

adults!” She earned a Master of Science in clinical psychology at 45. As the

regional director of a nonprofit, she was chosen from among 72 peers to

serve on a national policy-making board. She started synergize! when she

was 56. She received an Athena Award from The Lancaster Chamber. She was

an M3 1000 (“Make Mine a Million”) winner. She is a sought-after workshop

presenter and speaker.

“Now I realize that success has more to do with who I am, not what I have

done.”

She believes this applies to businesses, also.

“Companies might win awards or increase profits, but if their employees

hate going to work, it’s not a great place to work.”

Through synergize! Marilyn helps organizations build great teams, from

hiring to overcoming dysfunctions to individual and team development—

teams where employees are engaged and work well together and top

performers are attracted and retained.

“We help build places where people love going to work.” WBE

When faced with a challenge, Susan Heinle, RN, has always looked at the

glass as half full and seized the opportunity.

And that’s exactly what happened the day Sue needed assistance for a

family member. She realized there were limited services available in the area

for seniors. With the encouragement of her dad, Sue decided to start a

business where she could help families keep their loved one at home and

provide the care they needed.

Sue realized her dream in October 2002, when she opened the doors of

the Visiting Angels franchise in York.

Visiting Angels is committed to its clients and to providing the quality

care they seek and deserve. Its mission is guided by a tradition of quality

care, customer service, and business excellence.

In 2010 and 2011, Sue received the Central Penn Senior Care Hero Award

for her dedication and commitment to helping older adults and was

nominated for the Business of the Year Award in 2011. Visiting Angels’ Angie

Walker received the 2012 Central Penn Senior Care Hero Award.

Visiting Angels was voted Best of York County in 2012 and one of the Best

in York County in 2011. Sue also sits on several committees to advocate for

older adults.

The Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) certification for

women-owned businesses is one of the most widely

recognized and respected certifications in the nation.

Certification makes a firm eligible to be counted toward

the participation goals of minority- and woman-owned

business utilization programs. Through these programs,

utilization goals are percentages of contracts for federal,

state, or local government projects that are designated for

women- and minority-owned firms.

WBE is accepted by more than 700 major

corporations across the country and a number of federal

and government agencies. The WBE certification can be an

important element of your marketing and business

development strategy.

The benefits if having the WBE certifications are

substantial. It allows you to:

• List your business profile in WBENCLink, an Internet

database that is accessed by hundreds of corporations

throughout the United States

• Have access to a directory of corporations accepting

WBENC certification

• Use a special WBENC seal on your letterhead, business

cards, and other marketing materials

• Participate in networking events, matchmaker meetings, and

tradeshows with other WBEs and corporate and government

buyers

• Become a member of the local forum, which advocates on

behalf of WBEs and facilitates corporate business opportunities

A WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise) is an independent

business concern that meets the following requirements:

• Fifty-one percent ownership by a woman or women

• Proof of effective management of the business (operating

position, bylaws, hire-fire, and other decision-making roles)

• Documented evidence of contribution of capital and/or

expertise

• U.S. citizenship or U.S. resident alien status

Fees for certification range from $350 to $1,000, and the

processing time is generally 60-90 days once all necessary

documentation has been submitted.

According to the National Business Enterprise National Council,

the certification process is as follows:

A business entity submits an application, along with the

necessary supporting documentation and non-refundable

processing fee.

Each partner organization has a trained certification committee

that meets on a monthly basis. Once the applicant’s file is

complete (meaning all documentation pertinent to the business

and legal structure has been received), it will go to the committee

for thorough review.

Verification of the business is made through financial

documents such as the profit and loss statement. These financial

documents provide evidence that the applicant business is truly in

business and lists the business’ revenue and expenses. Additional

information is required and used collectively to establish the

ownership, management, and control by the women owners.

An onsite visit is conducted initially and then every three years

as part of the recertification process.

The certification is renewable annually.

Why should you get a Women’s Business Enterprise

certification? It just may well help you grow your business and

may help you zero in on your goals and what you really want out

of your business.

You can find more information, support, and what you need to

get started at www.wbenc.org.
