There are a few things about weddings that cannot bepredicted or controlled, such as what Mother Naturewill do. However, there are many things within thecontrol of the bride and groom. Proper planning canhelp ensure the wedding of their dreams.
One of the best ways to ease wedding-day nerves is for the cou-ple to get organized and begin planning their event the moment theengagement period begins. The earlier preparation starts, the betterthe chance that vendors will be able to provide what’s needed, orthat changes can be made when unforeseen events pop up.
By making a list of things to do, couples can allot time in theirschedules for each task, and they can feel a sense of accomplish-ment and relief each time an item is checked off the list.
Decide on a date.Couples should select a date for their wedding soon after becomingengaged. After all, it is the countdown to this day that will helporganize and determine planning schedules.
Reserve a ceremony location.Traditional weddings take place in a house of worship. It’s best tomeet with a pastor, rabbi or other officiant to see if the ceremonysite will be available. This person will also help guide couples
through religious requirements needed prior to getting marriedthere, as well as any rules and regulations for the ceremony site.
Book a reception site. After securing the ceremony location, couples will have peace ofmind knowing they can now book the place where their party willtake place. This may be a catering hall, hotel, cruise ship or evensomeone’s backyard. Sometimes the ceremony site is also thereception site. Catering directors are typically on hand to talk aboutpricing and options. They work closely with the couple to plan andexecute the reception.
Select a photographer.Photographers tend to book quickly, particularly if they are well rec-ommended. It pays to research and choose one early in the wed-ding-planning process. Every photographer has a different style. The couple should select one who will not only be accommodatingto their wishes, but who will also suggest ideas that may not havebeen considered. The photographer’s personality is important. He orshe will be spending the entire day with the couple and should belikable and personable. Couples should also find out if the photog-rapher they speak with at the studio will be the one shooting thewedding.

Book a band or DJAnother vendor that tends to have a busy schedule will be the wed-ding entertainer. Early booking ensures your date will be available.Couples should talk about musical selections and the ways toengage the various generations attending the reception.
Choose a florist.Flowers add an elegant touch to the wedding day. A florist willoften provide flowers for both the ceremony and the reception. Thecouple should select a florist who offers them helpful, creative ideasabout bouquets, corsages and centerpieces – and who will deliverin a timely manner.
Select and order dresses.Wedding and bridesmaid gowns can take several months to orderand be tailored. It can also take some trial and error finding a dressshop that meets the needs of a bride and her attendants. So it’sbest if this fun part of wedding planning is done early. While thereare no set rules for gown selection, it may help if the bride and herattendants use the same shop so that styles will be complementa-ry and service and alterations can be organized with minimal fuss.
Order invitations. With a bevy of styles of invitations there will be many ideas to con-sider. Couples should leave ample time to look through samplebooks or do research on the Internet. They should decide on a stylethat best suits their wedding, based on its formality, the time of dayand the wedding colors.
Choose transportation. Many couples forget to factor limousine or car rentals into theirwedding-day plans. Whether it’s a limo, Rolls, horse-drawn car-
riage, or a party bus, the bride and groom should arrange for trans-portation for themselves and their attendants to and from thechurch and reception site.
Find formal wear.Tuxedo rentals are quite popular for weddings. If the wedding is
taking place during a peak party season, such as prom time, it paysfor couples to reserve tuxes several months in advance of the wed-ding. All of the groomsmen should rent from the same shop to beuniform.
With these important decisions made, the bride- and groom-to-be have only a few things left to do as their wedding draws nearer. This includes selecting wedding favors, addressing the invitationsand purchasing thank-you gifts for their wedding party. –(MS)

T he role of the maid of honor canturn into a dress rehearsal for theday when it is her turn to be thebride.
The bride’s maid of honor typically has aclose personal relationship with the bride andoften serves as confidant and advisor on avariety of issues.
Preparations can include selecting wed-ding colors; choosing the bridesmaid dress-es, the caterer and flowers; identifying alocation for the wedding and reception; andhosting a bridal shower.
This position of honor can be loaded with alot of work and responsibility as well as a lotof fun.
Typical maid-of-honor duties include shop-ping with the bride, arranging transportationfor the bridal party, communicating plans andresponsibilities to the bridal party, helpingwith wedding invitations, ensuring the bridalparty gets to rehearsals on time, helping dur-ing the rehearsal dinner and other events, andmaking sure the reception runs smoothly.
She also has official duties such as signingthe marriage license along with the best man
and participating in the first dance with thebest man, holding the groom’s ring during theceremony, holding the bride’s bouquet duringthe ceremony and toasting the newlywedsduring the reception.
Then there are the tender tasks of helpingto prepare the bride just before her grandmarch down the aisle by fixing her hair, adjusting the veil and wiping tears to avoidsmudging makeup, along with the tedioustask of helping to keep track of the weddinggifts and money cards.
Lest we forget, the toughest task for themaid of honor is the unofficial duty of keepingthe bride calm, being a sounding board for thebride and offering thoughtful opinions whenmajor decisions are being made.
There is also the responsibility of keepingthe bride calm the day of the wedding whennerves and anxiety will be at their peak.
On top of all that, the best maid of honormust be a good listener in order to provide thenecessary emotional support the bride needsleading up to and the day of the wedding, asshe prepares for the start of her newlife. –(ARA)

Dress shopping should be fun, not stressful
Women dream of the day they shopfor their wedding gown. But theexperience that is expected to
bring multitudes of joy and be nothing butfun can sometimes turn out quite the oppo-site. It could bring frustration and stress.
Here are some tips to make the experi-ence all you’ve ever dreamed it should be:• Before shopping, spend timelooking through bridal magazines.Mark styles that catch your eye. Take thesewith when you go shopping.• Plan a day to do nothing but shopfor that one special dress. Make itfun. Include a special family member orfriend and enjoy each other’s company. Be
sure to have a plan – list what shops you’dlike to visit, etc. But don’t schedule yourselftoo tightly – you don’t want the stress thatcomes from falling off schedule.• Take your time to look at differ-ent styles. One idea is while you try onone style, let your friends or family mem-bers try on other styles so you can see whatthey look like without you having to dressand undress so many times. Once you’vegot it narrowed down, then you can try yourfavorites on yourself.• Be open-minded. You may think youknow exactly what you want, but you maybe surprised that once you try on a dress inthat style it isn’t what you envisioned. Be
open to looking at styles you may not haveconsidered before. Also, be open-minded tothose helping you. Don’t be offended ifsomeone tells you a style isn’t right for you. They want you to look glamorous on yourday, and you should expect them to be hon-est and accept their feedback gracefully.• Let the professionals help. Thereare people with expertise in this area. Listento their advice and feedback. They haveinsight into current trends, what style maywork well with your body build, etc. Tellthem right away about your likes and dis-likes to help them tune in to your personalstyle.

THE PERFECT LOCATION FOR WEDDINGS, ANNIVERSARIES, LARGE PARTIES & MORE..
When it comes to planning a wedding, finances are first and foremost on theminds of many couples. As the costs
associated with weddings continue to rise, the needfor a budget only grows more apparent.
But how can a couple establish and stick to abudget? Doing so depends on each individual couple, how much they can spend and what they’re willingto sacrifice for their big day.
Establishing a budgetWedding budgets can vary greatly depending on
the couple and the type of wedding they desire. Awedding budget should be established as far inadvance as possible. When setting the budget, it’sbest to determine exactly how much you can spend, and then set the budget lower than that.
For example, if the most you can afford is$25,000, set your budget at $22,000. This will allowyou some wiggle room when the inevitable happensand you’re forced to go over budget.
Monitor your spendingOnce a budget has been determined, a good way
for couples to adhere to that budget is to establish aseparate wedding spending account. This accountshould be separate from personal accounts, and all
wedding expenses should be drawn solely from thisaccount.
This is a good way to monitor how much you’respending, and your monthly statement will providean itemized list of how much is being deposited andspent.
Be ready to spend moreRegardless of how well you’ve planned the wed-
ding, you’re going to end up spending more thanyour initial budget allowed. This happens for a num-ber of reasons, ranging from overtime fees at thereception to tipping the vendors, to larger guest liststhan you might have originally intended.
Prepare for the inevitable overspending by cuttingback on other expenses leading up to the big day.Rather than going out to dinner on weekends, makea home-cooked meal to save some money. Insteadof costly trips to a night club, invite friends over forthe night. You’ll be surprised how much these subtlelifestyle changes can save you.
Stick to your gunsWhile you should be prepared to spend more, that
extra spending should be saved for things such astipping the staff and possibly paying more for anadditional guest or two. Where couples should be

There’s good news forbrides and grooms. Expertssay it’s possible to have awedding to remember with-out breaking the bank. Thekey is planning.
Here are some tips:
Set your priorities. How you budget your
money is going to dependon your priorities. If servinga four-course dinner ismore important to you thanhiring a high-end photogra-pher, then you’ll want tobudget more on food.
Pare down the guest list. One of the easiest ways to save money
is to invite only close family and friends.
Choose flowers wisely. Choose flowers in season. Choose a
location such as a garden or vineyard thathas built-in decor. If your bloom of choiceisn’t in season, swap out expensive flow-
ers for ones that provide thesame look and feel.
Find a sample sale. A popular way to save on
the wedding dress is to hit asample sale, which expertssay can help cut costs by asmuch as 80 percent. Ifyou’re having a fall/winterwedding, check out samplesales during April/May, andif you’re having aspring/summer wedding, hitthe sample sales in October/November.
Save on alcohol. To save on alcohol, consider unlimited
beer and wine with a signature cocktail.
Get creative with the cake. If you have your baker create a fake
layer or two in your wedding cake, andactually serve slices from a sheet cakehidden in the kitchen, you can save about50 percent per slice. –(NAPS)
Creative budget tipsfor weddings
budget-cautious is when vendors try to up-sell services.
For example, while a top-shelf bar mightbe a nice gesture, it can be considerablymore expensive than just offering beer atyour reception and letting your guests payfor liquor.
If a vendor tries to up-sell, couplesshould not hold that against the vendor. After all, that’s their job. Instead, prioritizewhat you want before you go visit any ven-dors. You’re much more likely to be happywith your selections. –(MS)

T here are many grooms-to-bewho leave choosing their wed-ding day attire to the lastminute. After all, it’s somethingthat doesn’t require much
thought, right?Actually, choosing your attire requires
careful consideration of several variables. As such, many men are intimidated by theprocess, which is another reason for pro-crastination.
However, acquiring a few pointers willhelp make the process easier if you havelimited experience with wedding day attire.
First, it’s important to consider the styleof your wedding. What time is it being held? What is the size of the wedding party andthe number of attendants? Will it be held ina church with a reception at a fancy cater-ing hall, or is it a more laid-back affair at apark or on the beach?
All of these questions will help determinethe formality of the event. Your wardrobechoices should coincide with this level offormality.
Tuxedos are often the attire of choice for
weddings that are moderately or ultra for-mal. A tuxedo with a bow tie and tails is avery formal look. For the majority of wed-dings a tuxedo without tails, with a match-ing vest and regular tie, will be adequate forthe groom and groomsmen. On some occa-sions, especially casual weddings, groomschoose to wear a sports jacket and slacksrather than a tuxedo.
Tuxedoes are flattering for most men, especially when a black tuxedo is chosen.Black is slimming, and simply slipping into atuxedo can enable anyone to look sophisti-cated.
Working with a tuxedo shop representa-tive can help you to find a tuxedo that fitswell. These garments are available in anumber of sizes, but a reputable shop willmake minor alterations to ensure a perfectfit.
You want to be sure there is no pulling inthe jacket and that the pants are a goodlength. Also, the fit of the shirt – includingcollar and shirt sleeve length – is important(the cuffs should extend past the jacket a lit-tle bit). You want to be comfortable the
entire duration of your wedding.Tuxedo jackets come in many styles,
with the basics being single- or double-breasted. Double-breasted jackets may adda little bulk, which should be avoided byheavy men or those who are very slim.Jackets also come in different lengths.
Choose one that is proportionate to yourheight so your body does not look over-whelmed by the jacket. Here are a few ofthe styles:
Cutaway jacket. This jacket is shorterin the front and tapers to one longer tail inthe back. It is traditionally a formal daytimejacket.
Traditional tuxedo jacket. Asmentioned, this can be single- or double-breasted and feature varied numbers of but-ton closures. The lapels may also be varied.A peaked lapel forms a “v” at the collar andpoints upward. A notched lapel has anindentation at the collar in the shape of a tri-angle. A shawl lapel has no indentation andsmoothly curves around the neck.

Mandarin jacket. Mandarin-style jackets do not have a lapel but acollar that stands straight up. Thereare six buttons along the front. It isworn with a mandarin-style shirt with-out a tie.
Long coat. The long coat is bestworn by tall, broad-shouldered menand is traditional in colder weather. The coat extends beyond the finger-tips of the wearer.
Dinner jacket. This is a variationon the regular tuxedo jacket, but it isusually ivory or white in color. This canset the groom apart from other mem-bers of the wedding party.
Many grooms-to-be opt to rent theirtuxedo instead of purchase one.Wedding experts recommend rentingthe attire three months before thewedding. All groomsmen should rent
their tuxedos from the same shop for auniform look.
It is also customary to coordinatethe tuxedos with the gowns brides-maids will be wearing. One way to doso is with a similar colored tie, vest orcummerbund. Take a color swatch ofone of the bridesmaids’ gowns withyou to the tuxedo store for assistancewith matching the look.
Pick up the tuxedo a day or twobefore the wedding and try on everypiece, including the shoes, to checkfor fit. This way you have time for anexchange if something is not right orto pick up a missing tie or cufflink, which is apt to happen.
Rented tuxedos usually need to bereturned the day after the wedding orthe next business day. Elect a memberof the wedding party to handle tuxedoreturns. –(MS)

Photographingyour wedding experience
A picture can indeed be wortha thousand words, especial-ly when it comes to wed-dings. Most brides andgrooms have undoubtedly
booked the best photographer their budgetwill allow to capture priceless memoriesfrom their wedding day.
Many couples also realize that it isimportant to capture the special momentsleading up to and following the big day –such as the engagement and bacheloretteparties, showers, the rehearsal dinner andhoneymoon.
Although a professional photographermay not always be on hand for these hap-penings, newlyweds will probably want tomake certain that after the honeymoon, they have a variety of photographs to filltheir albums.
Here are a few simple tips to help pre-serve the memories from this special time:
Capturing the preparations. Some of the most entertaining
moments occur months, weeks or daysbefore the wedding. Therefore, manybrides, relatives and friends should bring acamera to capture the preparations, suchas dress-shopping excursions andhair/makeup sessions.
Photos of such memorable occasionscan be part of the formal wedding album, and also will help the bride compare wed-ding-gown options and select those shelikes best. A bride’s stylist can then usethese pictorial reminders to assist them inre-creating her desired look.
Power at the ready! With the mainstream popularity of digi-

Cyber brides. Many brides and grooms are creating their own website to serve as both a pre-
wedding information center (e.g., for RSVPs, directions, gift registry) and a cyber-album for uploading photographs complete with captions, to share with family andfriends. Several sites also allow guests to download images for their own enjoyment. One of the most popular and modestly priced hosting sites iswww.ewedding.com. –(BNN)
With these simple suggestions, each memorable moment can be made to last alifetime.
As guests snap away during the ceremonyand cocktail hour, many will end up with a deadbattery before the first dance. That’s why it isalways a good idea, whether at the favor table orin the vanity baskets, to provide guests withplenty of disposable batteries to keep their cam-eras powered when there is no time to recharge.
The most popular sizes for today’s camerasare AA alkaline batteries for digital cameras andphoto lithium batteries for film cameras.
Because professional photo proofs often takeseveral weeks to arrive, guests’ photos are typi-cally the first the bride and groom will actuallysee, so it is in their best interest to keep theirguests ready to capture their best moments.
Instant albums.Another growing trend among brides is not
only that of documenting their wedding experi-ence from the engagement through the honey-moon, but also preserving those moments in per-sonalized scrapbooks or instant albums.
An instant album is easily created by pre-dec-orating album pages, then bringing a portablephoto printer to special occasions, such as theengagement party or bridal shower.
Friends and relatives can snap digital photos, print them, and instantly affix them to the albumpages along with personal notes. With thisoption, no time is wasted – each section of thephoto album will be complete before the cham-pagne runs dry.

honeymoonplanning
After months of planning and saving for a wedding, ahoneymoon offers one-to-one time for the couple tohave fun, develop a deeper relationship, and enjoysome much needed rest and relaxation.
Among couples who enjoy a traditional wedding, statistics saythat 99 percent take a honeymoon. The average honeymoon costsapproximately $5,000. Since a honeymoon will account for at least14 percent of the total wedding budget, couples want to ensurethat theirs is money well spent – especially in an economy whereevery penny counts.
One of the keys to honeymoon success is preparation. Here aresome additional tips:
Do your research. Timing plays a large role in honeymoon trav-el. It’s important to research the average weather conditions forprospective honeymoon locales during the month you’ll be travelingas well as any events that may take place at that time. This wayyou book your honeymoon during an optimal time for the best con-ditions, both in regards to weather and the local culture.
Save money. Putting honeymoon plans into the hands of anexpert could add up to considerable savings. Travel agents haverelationships with tour and package providers that they can lever-age in ways the average consumer cannot. Turn to a honeymoonexpert for honeymoon planning needs so your honeymoon can trulybe a trip of a lifetime.
Honeymoon registry. Not just for budget-conscious brides-and grooms-to-be, consider creating a honeymoon registry to giveyour wedding guests an alternative to crock pots, toasters andblenders. Wedding guests can improve a honeymoon experience bygifting the activities, excursions and dining experiences that makethe trip memorable.
Read reviews. There’s a reason review sites are so popular –they help people make better, more informed decisions. Advertisinggives you one perspective, reviews give you another. Make surethat you read reviews of the places you are considering for yourhoneymoon so that you get a variety of viewpoints.

Music is an inte-gral part ofboth the wed-ding ceremonyand the recep-
tion. Music conveys emotionsthat are difficult to put intowords. Additionally, songs andmusic help us to remembercertain key moments moreeasily. That’s why we oftenassociate rites of passage withthe sound track of that time inour lives.
Because music is such animportant part of the wedding, you want to take the time andnecessary precautions to avoidwedding day music slip-ups.As with most parts of the wed-ding process, preparation andplanning – as well as some rep-utable word-of-mouth recom-mendations – can make select-ing musicians and choosingsongs much smoother.Consider the following:
CeremonyCan you picture the bride
and her attendants walkingdown the aisle without anymusic? Many couples givecareful consideration to thereception music and then makethe mistake of leaving the cere-mony music to chance.
Ask your house of worship ifthey have any rules regardingsong selections, as well as reg-ulations on house or outsidemusicians. Then work yourmusic selections according tothose guidelines. While tradi-tionally brides enter to HereComes the Bride, stricter hous-es of worship may not allowthis tune, or brides simply mayprefer something else.
Classical, hymnal or other pro-cessional music is often appro-priate. Just keep in mind thetempo and length of the songso that it will match the gaitand size of the wedding party.
Chances are the ceremonymusicians will be different fromthose who are playing at yourreception, which may require alittle extra planning. If yourhouse of worship provides themusicians, arrange to sit downwith them to talk about stylesand what to expect. Alsoarrange to have payment or atip provided for their services.
ReceptionDepending upon the venue,
you will likely have more wig-gle room with your choices formusic at the reception. Bridesand grooms usually use eitherlive performers or DJs whoplay pre-recorded music. Someperformers offer a combinationof both.
Consider the style of yourwedding. Will it be formal orinformal? Traditional or con-temporary? Aim for music thatsuits the style or theme of thewedding. A full-piece orchestramay seem out of place at acasual party.
When you are choosingmusic, consider not only yourtastes, but the tastes of yourguests as well. While youwon’t be able to please eachand every person, the widerthe range of music you haveavailable, the greater thechance of people getting up todance and enjoying them-selves.

ContractsOnce you decide on your ceremony and reception musi-
cians, it’s important to sign a contract and work out paymentagreements. Having the information in writing protects you incase the musicians don’t deliver what was expected. Here aresome points that should be covered in the contracts.
• Price, deposit amount, additional charges (travel, foodrequirements, etc.), and overtime rates.
• The number of musicians who will be attending and whatinstruments they play.
• Names of specific people you want, such as DJ, leadvocalist and master of ceremonies, as well as what compen-sation will be made if these people are not available.
• Date and hours they’ll be working.• Additional services, such as dramatic lighting, dancers or
party favors.• Number of breaks and how the break time will be covered,
such as with recorded music.• Style of dress or costumes.• Specific music requests and a list of your wedding atten-
dants so they’ll have the right names if announcements arebeing made.
Be sure to ask friends, relatives and others for musician rec-ommendations. When you attend weddings, take the cards ofperformers you enjoyed. Contact prospective performers earlyon to ensure your wedding date is available. –(ARA)

Speak to anyone who has been married for years, and youwill find that communication is the key to a successfulrelationship. However, many couples enter marriage
without really knowing their spouses, or how they feel aboutcertain beliefs, hopes, aspirations, or even financial concerns.
After the glow of the wedding is over, couples who haven’tdiscussed these important topics may find that stress or argu-ments arise from miscommunication or misunderstanding.
Taking time to sit down with your fiancée or fiancé prior toplanning the wedding can help you learn even more about yourcompatibility and potential for a long-lasting marriage. Hereare some of the questions you can ask each other, which mayspark meaningful conversation. (Questions courtesy ofWeddingPlanningWorksheets.com) – (MS)

A re you one of thethousands of cou-ples who gotengaged over theholidays? This is an
opportunity for you and yourfuture spouse to get everythingyou ever wanted. Now is the timeto start from scratch – to upgrade, expand and replace, and to turn awhole bunch of mismatched mineand yours into a lifetime of ours.
A lot of couples become over-whelmed, feeling they have to getit all done at once. According tothe experts, this is totally normal. When it comes to registering, they suggest you relax, take yourtime and have fun. Go back to thestore as many times as needed, orupdate your registry online.
Here are some additional tipsto make wedding planning abreeze:
1Plan ahead:Start a bridal registry assoon as you say “yes.”
This way you will be prepared foryour engagement party and bridalshower, as well as your wedding.Periodically update your registryby adding more products if youneed to, even after the wedding.Be kind to procrastinators.
2Don’t be shy:Register for gifts in a rangeof prices and categories.
This will give guests and groupgivers lots of options to choosefrom.
Bridal registry
Remember...if you choose bold patterns for yourlinens, choose simple patterns for yourdinnerware. Timeless styles will beappreciated long after the wedding.

3Do the math: Here’s an easy rule of thumb: Add up all the gift-givers forboth your wedding and bridal shower. Register for at least
two times as many gifts as givers. Your guests will appreciatehaving lots of choices when they shop for you. Be sure to refreshyour list regularly as gifts get purchased.
4Register now, because you won’tbuy it later:You may think you will, but you probably won’t. Now is
the time to let others get you the stuff you’d never buy yourself.Your friends and family might even get together to purchase ahigher priced group gift.
5Remember the rule of three:When it comes to setting your table, if you choose boldpatterns for your china and flatware, pick a more simple
style of glassware. Prefer intricate stemware? Pair it with simplerpatterns of china and flatware. So, it’s bold/bold/simple or sim-ple/simple/bold.
Congratulations and best wishes on your engagement. Nowget registering and let the gift-giving begin. –(MS)
3sets is a win:Register for at leastthree sets of sheets:
one for the bed, one for thelinen closet and one for thehamper. This way you won’tbe forced to do laundry.

A wedding can bea wonderful andmemorable expe-rience for allinvolved. That’s
why you ask friends or relativesto share in the event and servein your wedding party.
Your offer is a wonderfulhonor, one that requires varyingdegrees of responsibilitydepending on the role each per-son will be playing. To help youdecide who to ask to be in yourwedding party, here is a list oftitles and responsibilities foreach participant’s role.
Maid of honorThe maid of honor is a role
typically filled by a sister or aclose friend. It is the equivalentof the groom’s best man. Themaid of honor’s role, therefore,is typically very involved.
Among her many responsi-bilities, the maid of honoraccompanies the bride on shop-ping trips for her weddingdress, while also planning thebridal shower, bacheloretteparty and coordinating thebridal party gift for the bride.
Also, the maid of honor helpsthe bride get dressed on herwedding day, holds the groom’swedding ring during the wed-ding and may also help in thewriting of invitations.
The maid of honor will alsotypically act as a witness to thewedding and dance with thebest man at the reception.
If the woman you’re asking ismarried, her title will be matronof honor.
Best man Perhaps the most well-
known responsibilities of thebest man are organizing thebachelor party and giving thetoast at the reception. But thebest man, who is typically a
brother or best friend of thegroom, also has many otherresponsibilities.
In addition to helping thegroom choose his tuxedo andget dressed before the wed-ding, the best man also coordi-nates the couple’s gift from thegroomsmen.
The best man may also holdonto any payment that’s due to
the reception site or the dona-tion for the house of worship, and take care of any final finan-cial details. He also holds thebride’s wedding ring during theceremony.
BridesmaidsAlong with walking in the
wedding procession, brides-maids attend the shower andcontribute to the bridal gifts.
Bridesmaids, who are typi-cally sisters or friends of thebride or groom, also dance withthe groomsmen during thereception.
To be further involved, eachcan be given specific roles, likereading a religious passage atthe ceremony, providing assis-tance with choosing weddingvendors, or helping to addresswedding invitations.
GroomsmenGroomsmen are the male
equivalent of the bridesmaids, typically having nearly identicalresponsibilities.
Sometimes, groomsmen canact as ushers for guests arriv-ing at the ceremony.
Groomsmen walk in thewedding processional andattend and help organize thebachelor party as well.
Flower girlIf the bride has a sister who
is especially young, that sistertypically fills the role of flowergirl.

Since most flower girls are very young, their responsibilities aregenerally limited to carrying a basket of flowers during the proces-sional and, depending on the bride’s preference, tossing flowerpetals on the ground to mark the bride’s entrance.
Ring bearerLike the flower girl, the ring bearer is typically a young member
of the family. His role is to carry a pillow with the rings sewn on itduring the processional. Some choose to have the ring bearer andflower girl walk next to one another during the processional.
Parents of the brideThe bride’s parents may be responsible for hosting the wedding,
if they will be completely financially responsible for the event. Insome cases, the father of the bride escorts his daughter down theaisle alone, but in other instances or in religious ceremonies, both
parents may accompany the bride. In all cases, it’s her preference. The mother of the bride may help fund or contribute to the plan-
ning of the bridal shower if the maid of honor needs assistance. These parents may also foot the cost of an engagement party ordinner to meet the groom’s family
Parents of the groomThe groom’s parents should host a rehearsal dinner prior to the
wedding. They may also contribute to the wedding if they desire. Inmost cases, the groom’s parents have limited responsibilities, butcan be involved as much as the wedding couple would like.
Traditionally, the groom’s mother confers with the bride’s moth-er on what color gown she is wearing, so as not to go with thesame shade. The groom’s parents may walk down the aisle inadvance of the rest of the wedding processional. –(MS)

Weddings are all about the brides,or so it would seem. While alleyes are on the bride, the
groom sometimes goes unnoticed. One person who shouldn’t fail to
notice the groomsmen is the groom him-self. Groomsmen can and often do havesignificant responsibilities. A good groomshould recognize the efforts of hisgroomsmen and give gifts as an acknowl-edgement of their efforts.
Following are some gift ideas:
Commemorate the reception.
Men tend to focus on the celebratoryaspects of the day. Grooms can give a per-sonalized gift as a means of commemorat-ing the day.
Back to thebachelor party.
These days, weekend getaways are acommon theme to many bachelor parties.Consider gifts that evoke memories of thatspecial weekend where you were the guestof honor.
Go the morefanciful route.
For grooms whose wedding will be anelegant affair, celebrate that elegance bygiving each of your groomsmen anengraved pocket watch. (MS)
Don’t forget tohonor the groomsmen
