WinterFall

The vegetable garden and the orchard
through the seasons
Spring
We live in detached houses. Many of us have a vegetable garden and fruit trees. Let's see what we grow in Villerest in a year.
SpringThe garden starts in the spring. The land is returned. Vegetables are planted : radishes, peas, carrots, potatoes, beets, zucchini, beans, salad, leek. At the end of spring, we eat the first strawberries.
The cherry trees are in bloom in April. We eat the cherries in May and June. Other fruit trees bloom: pear, plum …
SummerThe garden is green. It must drain a lot because it does not rain enough. We must remove the weeds. Many fruits and vegetables will be picked up: beans, peas, zucchini, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, raspberries, gooseberries.
Fruit trees are harvested and eaten: plums, pears, apples, figs, quinces.
Fall The last trees bear fruit: walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts. The leaves change color and fall.Around Villerest, winemakers harvest grapes. The grapes are cut with a “épinette”. Only the best grapes are kept. After harvesting, the grapes are put in tanks. Alcoholic fermentation transforms the juice into wine.
The garden is gradually emptied: potatoes, cabbage, beets, last carrots and salad are picked. In November, the nights are cold and it can freeze.
