The Razzmatazz trend direction touches on how society has become fast-paced over time, the impact of living within a hyperactive world, and how this way of life may affect families. It reflects on ways people can slow down and reconnect with our natural world.

Humans, like other animals, are naturally supposed to move through life at nature’s pace. Not so long ago humans marked time by the passing of the seasons, flow of tides, and animal and plant life phases. On a bigger scale, the sun, the moon and other celestial bodies marked time.

In the last 150 years or so, the human relationship with time has drastically changed. With the rise of the Industrial Revolution, mechanical processes and timelines have control humans. In an article written by Naras Bhat, M.D., F.A.C.P., a physician, board-certified internal medicine immunologist and certified metabolic cardiologist and stress manager at the University of California Berkeley, “In today’s world, many

people regard time as a commodity. For example, they say, ‘Time is money,’ and believe that time can be spent, saved, wasted, lost or even borrowed. This common perception of time focuses on the external, objective, and material by-products that occur during the passing of time.”

Because of the new regard for time, many people find themselves overwhelmed, frazzled and disconnected mentally and emotionally with lack of closeness to na-ture and the role nature plays in keeping humans balanced and relaxed. Naras Bhat goes on to say, “Many people perceive time as a finite, linear thing, as illustrated by the expression, time line. A time line has a beginning and an end—it’s finite. Further-more, when a time line is followed, the other aspect of time, a time cycle, is ignored. Many children and animals follow a continual time cycle, while many adults follow a time line.”

When time pressures are imposed on families, it tends to have a profound effect on parents and children as well. These pressures come in the form of stress, burnout and less quality time spent with children and result in lack of togetherness within the family unit.

There are small things people can do to slow down and reconnect. Make nature a part of your lifestyle by spending more time out-doors especially with the entire family unit. Nature has a way of relaxing humans. Dr. Marc Berman and fellow researchers at the University of Michigan agree that tak-ing in the sights and sounds of nature appears to be especially beneficial for our minds. Get children involved in creative activities that involve our natural world. Children who are exposed to nature and find an apprecia-tion for it may carry this un-derstanding into adulthood.

In an article written by the National Wildlife Federation entitled “Remember play-ing outside until mom called you in for dinner? Today’s kids probably won’t” states, “exposure to natural settings may be widely effective in reducing ADHD symptoms” and “nature makes you nicer, enhancing social interac-tions, value for community and close relationships.”
