From The President

Dear De La Salle Collegiate Family,As I write this letter, Thanksgiving is only a few days away. I realize that by the time you receive this issue of the Collegiate, we will be well into the season of Advent. Hopefully, in the midst of all of the activity surrounding this time of year, you are able to offer your own thanks to those who matter most to you. During my first few months as President of DLS, it has become obvious to me that our community has much to be thankful for. At the top of our gratitude list is our roll of benefactors - those men and women who faithfully and generously support our Lasallian mission.

This issue of the Collegiate includes our “Annual Report” - the school’s list of those benefactors who have given so generously to our school during the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Without the generous support of our benefactors, DLS would not be the outstanding school it is today. Please remember to pray for our benefactors during this season of gratitude and hopeful anticipation.

This issue also features Paul Verska, who is retiring after leading the football program for the last 14 years. Paul had made a difference in the lives of countless young men at our school. I want to thank Paul for all he has done, and our prayers and good wishes remain with Paul and his family as he moves into the next chapter of his life.

As 2016 begins in a few short weeks, we will begin our 90th year of educating young men from the metropolitan Detroit area. Thanks to all of the work done with our archives a number of years ago, we have in our possession the original photos of our groundbreaking. I cannot help but wonder about what hopeful anticipation the men and women who attended the groundbreaking that fall day in 1926 had in their hearts. Little did they know what the future would hold for DLS, let alone for our world. I can say with confidence that those men and women at the groundbreaking ceremony would be most proud of the Lasallian school we are today.

On behalf of the DLS community, I want to offer you and your loved ones our prayers and good wishes for a blessed Advent season and a Christmas season filled with joy as we recall the birth of Jesus. Thank you for all you do each day to make our work, the Lord’s work, possible.

Live Jesus in our hearts… forever!

Coach Verska

Before his arrival at De La Salle in 2002, the Pilots had one football playoff appearance in the school’s nearly 75-year history.

“Paul Verska changed the culture of the football pro-gram to a winning culture,” said Athletic Director Brian Kelly.

That winning culture has included 11 state playoff appearances and three trips to the state finals, in-cluding the 2014 Division 2 State Championship.

Before the season began, Paul informed the school’s administration that this would be his final season. He deliberately chose not to tell the players. “I didn’t want the kids to know until after the season. I didn’t want it to affect them because they were having a great year. So I just kept it quiet and so did the administration.”

The announcement to players came after a loss to East English Village in the final moments of the first game in the 2015 district playoffs. The Pilots finished the 2015 season 6 - 4, with key injuries tak-ing their toll as the season went on.

Paul retires as the winningest coach in De La Salle’s football history. His career includes over 210 wins, and 106 wins with the Pilots.

“After last year, I thought I was going to hang it up,” he said. “But I promised this year’s senior class when they came in as freshmen, that I would be here for all four years.”

His sister’s death last spring impacted him as well. “It brought to mind that I’m not going to be here forever. It’s just time. I have grandbabies. DLS will be fine with or without me.”

Paul and his wife of 41 years, Kathy, have two mar-ried children, Nick Verska (Meredith) and Kristen Lang (Mike), and three grandchildren, with another on the way.

Best Football Staff in MichiganPaul readily points to his coaching staff’s abilities.

Head Football Coach Verska Announces Retirement“Mike Lewis and Mike Szatkowski have been with me for 14 seasons. Their hard work, dedication, and commitment have helped create and establish DLS as an elite football program in the state.”

Paul likens the staff to building a home. “When you build, you start with a foundation. We have been blessed to add to this foundation the expertise of Bob Schroeder, Mike Szalkiewicz, Matt Lewis, Nino Landa, Ron Bonin, Larry Zimmerman, Justin Reed, Jim Madigan, Alan Zaciek, Mike Jolly, Mark Wojcik, and Rick Corona. DLS is blessed to have a group I call the best football staff in Michigan. This group is a great blend of youth and veteran coaches.”

“When I got here,” said Paul, ’‘nobody thought we could win. I would post on the board the last time we had beaten Catholic Central, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, U. of D, Brother Rice. We started scratching them off and working and working.”

Praise for Verska“In the brief time I have been President, I have come to know Paul as a man who is committed to our Lasallian mission,” said President John M. Knight. “He has made a difference in the lives of countless young men at our school. On behalf of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, our Board of Trustees, our administration, faculty, staff, and students, I want to thank Paul for all he has done for our school. Our prayers and good wishes remain with Paul and his family as he moves into the next chapter of his life.”

Principal Patrick Adams noted Paul’s impact on students. “We have been blessed with Paul Verska’s leadership. He has positively affected the lives of many students and for that we are forever grateful. We know our football program is one of the best in the state because of him, but what truly stands out in his tenure here at De La Salle are the relation-ships he built with players, students, and colleagues. Paul’s influence will be the foundation for all good things to come in the future - both on and off the field.”

Greatest AccomplishmentsAfter graduating from Notre Dame High School (Harper Woods), Paul played football at Central Michigan University, and captained the Chips’ 1966 team. During his college years, Paul wanted to play pro football, and did have a one-year career as a fullback in the Continental Football League. After two years, 1967 - 1969, in the U.S. Marines, with ser-vice in Vietnam, Paul returned to college and earned his Bachelor’s in Education in 1972.

His teaching/coaching career took him all over Michigan: Lincoln Alcona, Detroit Servite, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, Cadillac, and Ann Arbor Huron. At some schools, he was the foot-ball coach, athletic director, classroom teacher, basketball coach, baseball coach.

Paul’s accolades are extensive. He has been inducted into the Michigan Football Coaches Hall of Fame and the Catholic High School League’s. He has been a district, regional, divisional, and county coach of the year. In the past 14 years, 85 Pilots have gone on to play college football. He has beaten top-ranked teams and defending state champions. He has taken two schools, De La Salle and Ann Arbor Huron, to the state finals.

“The pride that the De La Salle community has in the accomplishments of the football pro-gram can be directly tied to the dedication and efforts of Paul and the fine staff he assembled,” said Brian Kelly.

But Paul doesn’t mention players or records or trophies as his greatest accomplishment.

“I was walking down the hall at Beaumont hospital visiting a friend, and walking toward me was a doctor. I looked at him, and realized I had him as a student at De La Salle. I used to call him ‘wing nut.’ That’s the greatest accomplish-ment. That these young men get an education, get good jobs, become good husbands and fathers.”

He is also savoring his accomplishments. “I’m just sort of savoring all of the fine things the senior class did and all of the great memories they gave me.”

Paul knows he will miss the coaching staff. “I will miss the bonding with the fellows in the coaching office and breaking down film.”

For now though. he’s relaxing and catching up on all those things that get put off during the season. “I’m happy to have the freedom to plan vacations, and have time with family without having to work around the weight room and prac-tice schedules, 7 on 7’s, and games.”

Although Paul has turned around numerous football pro-grams around the state, he has no plans to transform an-other program. “If I coach at all, it would probably be for my grandson’s pee-wee team.”

Senior captain Jordan Asbury who has signed to play at Western Michigan University, said, “Paul Veska is a legend. I am so thankful and lucky to have played for him.”

Please join us in celebrating Coach Paul Verska’s 14 outstanding seasons leading the Pilots:

Conversation With

John M. Knight became President of De La Salle Collegiate on July 1, 2015.

You officially joined the De La Salle Family this summer. Your first impressions? Our Lasallian mission is strong. Our students are well served in the classroom, whether it be in the International Baccalaureate Program or receiving assistance in our academic support programs.

Additionally, we have a very strong Professional Development program in place for our faculty. Our administrative staff serves our community in so many ways, most of the times in ways that no one really knows about.

Our co-curricular programs, including athletics, offer our students a well-rounded and competitive opportu-nity to develop and strengthen their many gifts and talents.

Simply stated, DLS is a blessed community!

What are some things that have impressed you about the DLS community in the last six months that you didn’t know when you took on the position? Our strong academic and co-curricular programs. Also, I did not fully appreciate nor understand the outstanding commitment and history of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Metro Detroit.

Your background in Catholic education is exten-sive, particularly at all-boys’ high schools. How does De La Salle compare to those schools?

Once one has been around for a number of years, experiences and places can seem to be more alike than different. The same is true for me after having been blessed to serve a handful of school communities. DLS is unique in many ways, and in a few ways we are very similar to our neighboring schools.

Most important to me is our Lasallian mission - that which truly makes us unique and gives us our strong foothold in the metro Detroit area. The Brothers and their lay partners have served the Metro Detroit area with great distinction and honor over the past 150 plus years.

Similar to my past experience at other schools, we do great work focusing in on offering a human and Christian education for our students in a manner that is innovative, comprehensive and ultimately transformative.

At the end of the day, DLS is an exemplary edu-cational ministry of the Brothers of the Christian schools.

Your background includes teaching and coaching. What did you love most about teaching? Coaching? And what do you miss? I love and miss the relationships that are formed in the classroom, on the basketball court, or in everyday contact with students. Administration is very much an indirect service to our students. While I spend portions of my days in meetings, our faculty and staff are in more direct contact with our students. There was a time, thanks to teach-ing 150 students a day, when I knew just about every student’s name in the school. Today, I have to pretty consistently ask a student his name a handful of times before I can remember who he is. Needless to say, that is a frustrating experience for me.

What are some of your priorities for this first year as President? The first priority is to listen to as many members of community as is humanly possible. I have met

Page 7: Winning Coach Retires - De La Salle Collegiate High School · Winning Coach Retires. 2 ... that by the time you receive this issue of the Collegiate, we will be well ... “I’m

7

John M. Knight

individually with close to 90% of my colleagues on the faculty and staff. Additionally, the Advancement Department and the Board of Trustees are working on a number of opportunities to more formally intro-duce me to our alumni, benefactors, and friends.

Secondly, I am learning about our Lasallian mission, the history of the Brothers and the many ways we strive to live out our Lasallian call. I want to be sure that I do all I can do and that each one of us can do to remain a vibrant Lasallian community.

Third, I am learning about the daily ins and outs of our school, from school finances, to our academic programs, to how we continue to remain in contact with our alumni and benefactors.

Finally, I am blessed to be called to work alongside our gifted and talented faculty and staff as we serve a great group of young men.

How have you gotten to know alumni and parents? I am trying to introduce myself to anyone I have not met before. So it can be as simple as saying hello to a parent or visitor at our front check-in desk. I have met a number of parents through the Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary and the Dads’ Club - which as we all know are just the best. I have reached out to our alumni and benefactors too. This past fall, my wife and I were guests of the Class of 1950 at their annual reunion. John Monigold and I had lunch with two alums from the Class of 1947. Whatever the opportunity has been or will be, I am trying to be present as much as possible to all the members of our community.

You’ve recently been on a “road trip” to Chicago? How was that? Where else are you going? The trip to Chicago was very enjoyable. Chris Czarnik, our Director of Advancement, and John Monigold, our Director of Alumni Relations, joined me for the two days in Chicago. The three of us met with a number of our alumni from all walks of life.

Without exception, we were blessed to meet remark-

able men who continue to express their love and support for their alma mater.

In the coming months, we will look at opportunities to travel to other areas where we have a good con-centration of alumni. Perhaps an East coast swing in the spring or early summer. It is always a great experience to meet those members of our alumni who take the time out to have a meal with us or to attend an alumni gathering.

We have a core group of alumni whom the school has called on for help in arranging the programs in the various cities we want to visit. That is just an-other example of how our alumni are generous and always ready to answer a call from the school.

At the recent Open House, you met with EVERY one of the prospective families in the school library. What did you talk about?I shook hands with everyone who walked into the room. I thanked them for taking the time to visit our school, I introduced myself to them, spoke about the role of the President and introduced them to our “Three Pillars.” In particular, I spoke about what our core identity is as a Catholic, Lasallian school and how that informs all that we do each day.

If you could communicate one thing about DLS to an alumnus who hasn’t been in touch with the school recently, what would it be? DLS is thriving because our Lasallian mission is thriving. Young men are meeting God each day and being challenged to stretch and grow in their faith. Our students’ minds, hearts and spirits are being formed thanks to the work of the Holy Spirit who works through each one of our administrators, faculty, and staff.

All of this is taking place in a safe learning envi-ronment which prioritizes relationships as a key foundational component of our mission. St. John Baptist de LaSalle is very proud of the many, many ways we are touching the hearts of our students each day. I invite all alumni and friends to come and see with their own eyes the great things that are taking place in our school each day.

Alumni Spotlight

He was not the class president.

He wasn’t a class officer.

But Tony Mattar, Class of 1950, has been organizing his fellow Pilots ever since that long-ago graduation day.

Tony has so organized his class that they have met EVERY five years for a reunion, beginning in 1955.

The 65th reunion was held in early October.

Tony says the reunions used to be two-day affairs, with golf, a “bachelor beer party,” sometimes a lake cruise, and then a dinner. “The wives are always invited,” he said.

“But now it’s a little harder for guys to travel, so we have a one-day reunion. We’re keeping things sane.”

When J.P. McCarthy, also of the Class of 1950, was unable to M.C. the class’s 25th reunion, in 1975 at the Bayview Yacht Club, Tony’s classmates pushed him toward the microphone. “I didn’t know what I was going to say!” Tony recalls.

He’s been the Master of Ceremonies ever since.

At the 50th reunion, fellow Pilot Dave Kellett surprised Tony with a plaque. Dave asked class members to write a sentence or two about what Tony had contributed to the unity of the class, and then had his classmates sign their names.

“I want to thank Dave in particular for his initiative,” said Tony. “I really cherish this.”

Tony received a second plaque at the 60th, again an effort spearheaded by Dave.

The Class of 1950 had 90 graduates, and Tony says that about 30 - 35 are still involved.

“I keep my classmates informed of things going on - illnesses, successes. If someone passes away, I notify them of the details,” said Tony.

Classmate Bill Fox, who was honored along with Tony at the 2005 Christian Brothers’ Dinner, said, “I’m just so thrilled that we’ve got Tony. I don’t know where we would be or what we would do without him. He’s our class historian, our class reunion director.

He keeps us all involved with anything going on at De La Salle. He’s been on the Board of Trustees. He’s devoted a big part of his life to De La Salle. We’re all very proud and happy that we’ve got him to take care of us.”

Tony also promotes De La Salle functions, par-ticularly the senior alumni luncheons in June and December each year, as well as the Christian Brothers’ Dinner.

“I also try to encourage my classmates to be-come contributors to De La Salle, and support the Endowment Fund. My classmate Bill Fox gave DLS $5 million - the largest single gift in school history.”

Tony says, “The school does a super job of educating all who attend the institution. The objective of the school is to educate the poor, in particular, and to have good facilities for all qualified students.”

Tony Mattar speaks to the football team prior to a practice. Tony attends nearly every varsity football game, and is always on the sidelines,

cheering on the Pilots.

“Tony’s love for the school is sincere and never-ending.”

Tony Mattar

Tony doesn’t think any other school has such loyal alumni who have remain connected with each other.

“I have six children,” said Bill Fox. “They are all college graduates. They don’t have the same type of relationships with their classmates that Tony and I do here at De La Salle. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

“Tony embodies De La Salle,” says Director of Advancement, Chris Czarnik. “He values the friendships and the bonds that were built as young men at De La Salle. His love for the school is sincere and never-ending.”

PlAnninG A ReuniOnPlanning a reunion starts with a call to the

Director of Alumni, John Monigold.

John will work with class representatives to provide class lists and contact information, sug-

gest a venue for the reunion, and provide any support services he can to the class.

John can be reached at 586-541-6212 or [email protected]

Mr. Alan ZaciekDlS Religion Teacher 2005 - 2012

Although Mr. Alan Zaciek retired from the classroom in December 2012, he continues to be a familiar face to current Pilots on the football and track teams.

He continues to help coach because “I enjoy it very much. It’s nice to see the kids develop and progress.”

A high school football player and trackman at Toledo St. Francis, Alan majored in Philosophy at the University of Toledo, and later earned an M.A. in Philosophy at Rice University in Texas. He hoped to teach Philosophy at the college level, but recognized the tough job market. With his minor in Economics, he made the financial decision to pursue a career in the financial world.

For over 20 years, Alan worked as a stockbroker for various firms, before turning to teaching. He taught at St. Martin de Porres High School from 1996 - 2005. While at De Porres, he began coaching football and track.

After De Porres’ closure in 2005, Alan came to DLS and taught freshmen and senior Religion classes. On the Football team, he coaches special teams along with Mike Jolly, and works with sprinters on the Track team.

In retirement, Alan is taking classes at Wayne State University in Ancient Greek and graduate courses in Philosophy. He is entering the M.A. program in Ancient Studies at WSU in the winter term. Alan says, “I’ve always had an interest in ancient Greece, and my language classes are my first encounter with the language.”

Alan and his wife Linda (pictured at right) enjoy trav-eling in their retirement. They visited southern Europe in 2013 and northern Europe in 2015.

Alumni may contact Mr. Zaciek through his DLS email, [email protected]

Your lasallian Fund Dollars At WorkYour support of the Lasallian Fund, De La Salle’s Annual Giving Program, is essential to the present and future of our school. The entirety of your gift stays at De La Salle and enriches every part of our students’ experience.

You support great spiritual, academic, and extra- curricular programs.

You provide tuition assistance and keep tuition as low as possible, benefitting every Pilot.

Most importantly, you cast a vote of confidence in the Lasallian Mission at De La Salle, making a difference in the lives of young men, their families and our community.

Admissions News

The 2015 Open House was another outstanding success, setting records for the number of prospective young men who attended the event. We had over 280 young men in attendance.

If you were unable to attend Open House, please reach out to the Admissions Office at 586-541-6220 or [email protected]. We are happy to schedule an individual tour or meeting with you at any time.

For current 8th grade students, please remember that the Metro Detroit Catholic High School Freshman Application is due by December 18th. It is important to submit this on time. This will ensure you have the best chance for full acceptance and access to financial aid grants.

One of the biggest questions we receive from prospective students’ families is, “I understand the value of investing in my son’s education, but I don’t how I can afford the tuition investment. Is there anything we can do to bring the cost of that investment down?”

Yes! In line with our Lasallian mission, we take great pride in ensuring De La Salle Collegiate is affordable for all families. We accomplish this through two programs. They are:

Academic Scholarships - These are based on how a young man scores on the High School Placement Test during the fall of his 8th grade year. The scholarships are renewable and range from $1,000 up to half off tuition.

Financial Aid - This is the number one way families receive help with the investment in tuition. De La Salle awarded over $500,000 in aid to the most recent freshmen class. Our aid grants range from $500 up to $8,000.

The financial aid grants that De La Salle awards are directly funded through the generous support of our alumni and benefactors. Without their continued support, a De La Salle education would not be possible for many of our families.

For families with students in grades 1-7 there is nothing they need to do regarding aid and affordability at this time. However, the best action they can take is attending some of the upcoming admissions events. Some of these are listed on the following page.

School Tuition Year Cost 2015 $11,000 2016 $11,500* 2017 $12,000* 2018 $12,500*

*2016-2018 Tuition Cost is a forecast and not guaranteed.

Admissions News

• Pilot for a Day - This is open to young men in grades 7 & 8. Prospective students follow a current De La Salle student for the entire day. They sit in on classes and meet with applicable teachers, moderators, and coaches.

•Math Plus - This is for young men and ladies in grades 6-8. It is a six-week course open that exposes students to concepts in mathematics that are not covered in traditional junior high math curriculums. The next offering begins Tuesday, April 5, 2016. Check the website for more information.

•Spring Activities Night - The annual Spring Activities Night, on May 20, 2016, is for young men in grades 4-7 and their families. Young men pick two different workshops to attend during the evening. Some of the choices are Business, Art, Science, and Robotics.

•Coffee Talks - These are for prospective parents and generally are held on the first Friday of each month. They are the best opportunity for parents to witness daily life at De La Salle.

• Summer Camps - The summer camps are continuing to grow. We have added four new camps for 2016. They are Golf, Art, Medical, and Bowling. The camps are great ways for students to meet the faculty, staff, and coaches they will work with during their high school careers here at De La Salle. The camps are open to boys and girls in grades 3-11.

If you do not currently receive the monthly Admissions E-Newsletter, please contact us at [email protected] or 586-541-6220. We will be happy to add you to our mailing list. In addition you can Tweet the Admissions Office at @DLSAdmissions. The newsletter will provide an additional reminder about these great program opportunities for the young men in your family.

Thank youto all of the De la Salle

Parents and Students who volunteered for Open House!

Alumni News

Josh Agby (‘12) is lead Mechanical Engineer for the University of Michigan Solar Car Team, the #1 team in the United States. Josh is one of 17 students on the team, and is the project’s sourc-ing lead, working directly with manufacturers and suppliers.

The Michigan team was in Australia for the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge Race in October, and finished fourth worldwide, one hour behind the lead team.

For more information on the Michigan Solar Car Team, visit solarcar.engin.umich.edu

Andrew Chmielewski (‘06) was named one of Oakland County’s 2015 Elite “40 under 40” by Oakland County Executive Brooks Patterson. Andrew is co-founder of Mitten Crate, a com-pany which delivers an ever-changing selection of Michigan-made foods to customers’ doorsteps each month. The company has received national exposure on the Today Show and also been featured in Hour Detroit magazine.

“We were able to help cre-ate jobs and gain national exposure for small food producers in Oakland County and throughout Michigan,” Andrew said.

Mitten Crate also is involved in a give back initiative through the Gleaners Food Bank. “In our first year of busi-ness, we were able to donate 60,000 meals to Gleaners. We’re aiming to donate 100,000 meals in the coming year.

Andrew and his father have also created Dave’s Sweet Tooth, which has

become the largest manufacturer of specialty toffee products in Michigan.

Dr. James Choike (‘61) recently retired from the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Mathematics Department. He began his career at OSU in 1970. He estimated he had taught ap-proximately 10,000 students over the years, from college algebra to calculus and gradu-ate level courses.

James has co-authored several mathematics books during his career, and also actively

worked on grants for the university, securing funding in excess of $10 million from various foundations and governmental agencies.

He earned his Mathematics degrees from the University of Detroit (Bachelor’s), Purdue University (Master’s), and Wayne State University (Ph.D.), where his specialty was in complex variables.

In an interview with the Stillwater News Press last May, James cited his parents, who encouraged his choice of mathematics even though they had no formal schooling beyond high school, as well as teachers who had showed him their passion and love for mathemat-ics. He particularly cited Mr. Frank Bertrand, his DLS Algebra 2 teacher.

Married since 1966, James and his wife Marilyn (Dudek), a former high school American History teacher, have lived in the OSU university town of Stillwater since 1970, and raised their three children there. They have two grandchildren. James and Marilyn returned to Michigan for the 40th and 50th reunions of the Class of 1960, and were impressed with the quality of the facilities of the Common Road campus.

Athletic News

Cross-CountryPrior to this season, 50% of the DLS cross-country team had never run cross-country or a 5K race. Despite their youth, the team has a bright future, as six of the 28 active members had race times in the 17 minute range.

Four of the team members earned All-Macomb County Academic Awards, and nine earned their varsity letters.

DLS hosted both the Pilot Invitational (with 16 teams in August) and the CHSL Championship (with 21 teams in October). The team also received the Good Sportsmanship Award from the CHSL.

TennisWith only 10 returning Varsity/JV team members, the 30-member DLS Tennis Team flourished despite the new members’ limited experience.

Eight of 12 varsity players, including five rookies, were named to the All-County Team.

The team’s overall record was 5-7, 5-3 outside of the CHSL.

Coach Jacob Jones notes that the team had great improvement with excellent wins against quality opponents.

The Tennis team also qualified for the All-State Academic Achievement Award with a team GPA of 3.86.

SoccerThe Varsity Soccer team had a final record of 8-9-6. The season included winning the Indiana Pike Showcase Tournament, tying two #1 teams in the state, and beating another top five team.

There were two All-Catholic and two All-League players, and seven All District and All-Region players.

The Freshmen team was 10-4-2; the JV team was 6-4-5. Both finished second in the CHSL.

All three teams took home the trophy in the annual fundraising game for the Wounded Warriors charity.

Football The Pilots qualified for the MHSAA playoffs for the 11th time in the last 14 years.

The varsity football team finished the season 6-4, and was 3-1 in the CHSL Central.

Season highlights included beating the defending Division 3 State Champions, Orchard Lake St. Mary, and the defending Division 7 Champions, Loyola.

The Pilots were the regular season CHSL Central Division Champions, and a CHSL Prep Bowl Finalist (lost to Orchard Lake St. Mary). Retiring coach Paul Verska was named the CHSL Central Division Coach of the Year.

The team had five All Catholic and five All-League players, and had five First Team, All-County selections.

The strong senior class will be missed. Three seniors have already committed to Division 1 schools: Eric Rogers (Western Michigan University), Jordan Asbury (Western Michigan University), and Drew Beesley (Bowling Green State).

Senior Tru Wilson has been selected to play in the Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Game on January 3, 2016. Senior Jordan Asbury was also tapped for the Blue-Grey game, but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the first round of playoffs against East English Village.

The JV was the CHSL Central Division Champion, and the Freshmen team finished with a 6-2 record.

local Catholic Women Present Scholarship

Marlene Zelecki, Lois Smith, Br. Bob Carnaghi, Rae Hazelton, Mr. John M. Knight, Helen Anonick, and Theresa Austin.

In mid-October, the Youth Committee of the Daughters of Isabella, State of Michigan, presented De La Salle President John Knight with a check for $1,000 for scholarships.

The Order of the Daughters of Isabella is a charitable organization of Catholic women founded on the principle of its motto: Unity, Friendship, and Charity. The first group was founded in 1897, in New Haven, CT, as an auxiliary of a local Knights of Columbus Chapter. Catholic women, ages 16 and older, are eligible to join a Local Circle. These circles meet monthly for a combined business meeting and social gathering, and the group chooses programs to sponsor.

The Daughters of Isabella selected Queen Isabel, of Spain, as their Patroness. Queen Isabel spon-

sored Christopher Columbus’s voyages, and is also known for her sponsorship of efforts to help spread Christianity to the new world.

Among the projects sponsored through the national Daughters of Isabella are scholarships at the Catholic University of America, aid to missions home and abroad, aid to victims of natural disasters, and support of youth through educational scholarships.

For the past two years, the 22 Circles in Michigan have been raising funds to promote Catholic education at the elementary, high school, and college levels. De La Salle was selected at the organization’s State Convention in June 2015.

In the main hallway of De La Salle Collegiate, a “history wall” of photos depicts the school’s progres-sion from the 1920’s until the early 2000’s.

Two of the photos are of the November 15, 1925, groundbreak-ing at Glenfield and Connor, on the property across from the vacant space that would later become the Detroit City Airport.

The photo shows a canopy of sorts, on a wooden frame, and some wood-en posts connected with ropes to mark the area where the ceremony would take place.

Mr. Anthony Bodde is identified in the picture as the person turning the first shovel. His name, along with 13 others, and their pictures, is on a plaque in the main hallway here at De La Salle. The group is identi-fied as the Founding Board of Trustees.

Bodde is further identified on a separate plaque as a BFSC, a Benefactor of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, and as a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School.

Sometime presumably in the spring of 1926, Bishop Michael Gallagher arrived for the laying of the cornerstone. There is a video online on YouTube of the event. (The video is linked on the website on the Lasallian Education page). The same canopy ap-pears in the video, but there are no umbrellas and no snow on the ground.

Over the next several years, leading up to our 100th anniversary in 2026, we’ll be pulling together the

history of the school in words and pictures, and perhaps some video.

For now, though, we remember these men from another century - all born in the 1800’s - whose vision for a second boys high school con-ducted by the Christian Brothers - became a reality that wintery day - with a shovel in the ground.
