Network Adapter Settings

Open the network adapter settings dialog by clicking on the appropriate link in the Network and Sharing Center.

**018 So Network and Sharing. How do I look at the adapters. Right? So. This is the window we were looking at. Right? The Adapter Information is over here on the right- hand side. I can look at my wireless adapter settings. I can also look at-- in this case I have a couple of virtual adapters on the machine. Notice there is no- there is not a wired adapter icon available to me. And that's probably because right now I don't have anything connected to my wireless network adapter. Right? If I were to connect

something maybe I would have another icon presented up there. Right? So.

Network Adapter Status

Network Adapter Status

Network status information is available.

The adapter can be enabled or disabled.

Diagnostics are available.

The Properties button opens the Network Connection Properties window.

**019 When we think about the adapter configurations. There are- there is a plethora of things that I can configure on the adapter. If it's wired, for example, I could go in and say: Do I want to do half- duplex or full-duplex for the connection? If it's a multispeed network interface adapter, I could choose a speed. Do I want to do 10 megabits per second

Ethernet or 100 megabits per second Ethernet; or gigabit if it supports it? Or do I want it to auto-select? Flow control I might be able to select. There's all kinds of settings for my adapters. And obviously the settings for the wired adapters, there's some configurations that are the same or similar between wired and wireless. But then there are others that are unique. Obviously you're not going to do 10 or 100 Mb speed settings on a wireless adapter; it's automatically going to figure out what's the best speed that I can handle here. Right? And the way I go and configure those settings is under the Properties menu.

**020 Right? This is also where I get to change the protocols that I'm running on each adapter. File and Print Sharing is the one that we have highlighted here. If you've ever brought up Network Neighborhood in a Windows environment, you see all the other machines that are on your network. Well that's a direct result of that checkbox for File and Printer Sharing. If I were to disable that checkbox, then that functionality of seeing all those other machines goes away.

One thing to keep in mind is when I select or deselect any of these protocols that are running on the interface, I will change the communication capabilities of that machine; and sometimes I change the communication capabilities in an adverse way. If you deselect File and Print Sharing, for example, there's a very good chance your Help Desk is going to get a call; because the way your employees normally got the job done, it's not going to work anymore, and now you're going to have to teach them a whole new way. I can still connect to those other machines. It's just going to require different mechanisms to get- to do- accomplish the same task. Right? So we can install and uninstall and configure protocols and look at the properties.

Gateway becomes a potential MITM vector.

**021 So actually let's take a look. If I were to come up here. I'm looking at my network adapter. By the way, this is a wireless adapter. We can see that in the title bar; I have a wireless adapter. I'm just going to take a look at these details. This gives me a summarization of all the things I might want to know about this wireless adapter in its current state. It tells me my IP version 4 address and my subnet.

It tells me that there's a lease that has- that was used. So I'm-- that indicates I'm using DHCP. And somewhere-- oh right there-- DHCP was enabled; and I am using it. Tells me my Win Server, my DNS servers-- right? All the basic information I might want to know. I can learn a lot of this information also through the command line. I could do the ipconfig /all and figure out some of that information. Right? So that's the basic details. If I select this Properties window. This is where we're able to add and remove programs; deselect the client from Microsoft Network for example; maybe turn off some of that VM stuff that I am doing. Right? If I wanted to get more specific about the configuration of the wireless adapter, I can go to Configure: You have made changes. Do I wish to proceed? If I do, my change will be lost. Yes I want to proceed. Right? Here I go to the Wireless Adapter; and it tells me: This device is working properly. That's good to know. Under Advanced; wow there's a whole lot of settings here. Many of them I-- I don't know what Afterburner is. I'd have to do a little bit of research to find out what Afterburner is.

Minimum Power Consumption. I configured that one out on its own. I want Minimum Power Consumption to be enabled. Right? Don't let this wireless adapter use up too much power. Roaming. Do I want to allow roaming; or do I want to not allow roaming? Right? Lots of configurations. What driver am I using? We've talked about drivers in another module. And then Details. Well there's not much in the way of details here is there? Actually there is. If I look at the Property-- well what information do you want to know? Maybe you want to know when this thing was-- what's the install state? Maybe you want to know--let's go up-- capabilities. And we'd have to look at the manufacturer to find out what those values represent. Hardware ID. What else might I want to know? I don't know, maybe there's an address associated with it. No value there. Right? I can configure the power management; power consumption. Right? Allow this- allow the computer to turn off the device to save power. Allow the device to wake the computer. Right? Maybe I don't want the network device to wake the computer. Right?

By the way, there's a term-- I don't know if you guys have ever heard that-- Wake on LAN. Right? That would be what this selection here is: Wake on LAN. So I can bring the machine up online. This would be a good selection when we talk about updates. Let's say your machine goes to sleep and you want to push updates to it. Well if it's asleep and I try to push updates, it's not going to function. Right? So this would be the selection that we choose to-- Wake on LAN, that'll get the updates to this particular machine. Right? Lots of choices. Diagnostics as well are available to me. Right? Let's see. Go back to Properties. Oh we're looking at a different- a different window over there. All right. I could also set my computer to be a gateway for other computers on my network to gain access to the internet. Right? Let's say I don't have a wireless access point. Let's say I don't have a router somewhere; my computer is going to be that router. I can let other machines have access through me effectively to the outside world. And that's what this is showing right here.

I would say be very careful about doing that. First off, there could be a performance issue with the machine that you make as the gateway. But also those other machines could do denial-of-service attacks against you. You have effectively made yourself a man-in-the-middle for other machines that are being attacked. Right? So be very careful about that. Student: That's for ad hoc? Mark Williams: What's that? Student: Is that for ad hoc connections? Mark Williams: No that's-- does not have to be wired or wireless. I can do-- ad hoc is a term that's used in the wireless environment-- right?-- primarily. So I can- I can make my machine a gateway in wireless or wired. Student: Okay. Mark Williams: Right? So. When we're talking about wireless, no this is not the setting where I can turn on ad hoc or disable ad hoc. Student: Okay.
