Cooperating instructors work closely with all students, but in most cases these students areenrolled, charged tuition, and awarded grades only at their home institution.

Classes may be fully online or, more often, offered in blended formats with traditional face-to-face sessions taking place at both schools, while collaborative student work takes place online.

Issues of Language○ Speakers who share the same L1

○ e.g. US-Australia

○ Courses where one group is L1, the other L2○ Language Learning Courses

○ L1 and L2 both spoken/written in class

○ When EFL / ESL is a desired outcome

○ Courses where a lingua franca is used○ e.g. English as a lingua franca for exchanges between students

in Mexico, Russia and the US

○ e.g. a course on Human Rights between US/Lebanon

• Persepolis. I loved the story, and I thought it was clever to use a graphic novel to surpass any language barriers between the two groups.

American students really have explicit freedom of speech!!!!!!!! And due to this course we had an opportunity to appreciate it and express our ideas and then discussed them!!! Wonderful!!!!!!!!

It seems that US media is a little more democratic than Belarusian. But it was interesting to know that sometimes the Americans didn't trust the news as well as Belarusian people. I think I got good information about US media in this project.

SHU: Faculty awareness and experience with online learning and digital technologies

UWB: Entrepreneurial campus culture

KU: Institutional Support to Promote

SHU: Limited awareness of COIL

UWB: No permanent funding or staffing for COIL

KU: No In-house Instructional Designers (to promote them in 2015-2017)

SHU: Connect faculty to SHU partners/peers abroad; enhance intercultural experienceUWB: High population of non-traditional students, unlikely to study abroad -> COIL is an alternative to gain int’l experience, increase retention. Common types of international eLearning activities

65

• Active international exchange program unrelated to eLearning• eLearning offered to local military forces deployed overseas• Active international exchange program offered in full or in part

through eLearning activities• Distance programs work with international partner(s) to provide

eLearning to international students• Distance programs work independently to provide eLearning to

international students

Page 66: windleh@sunyulster.edu SUNY Ulster Instructional Designer · Principles of Management FA 2007 Principles of Accounting Universidad Internacional Cuernavaca, México Spanish SP 2008

66

Where to start:• Identify existing partnerships in which you or the

distance learning program at your college are involved related to international education

• Identify specific geographic locations where you or the distance learning program at your college are working or have an interest in doing so.

• Consider what you would like for your college to gain from the international experience

Collaborative Online International Learning is not a technology or a technology platform, but is a new teaching and learning paradigm that develops intercultural awareness and competence across shared multi-cultural online learning environments.

The COIL model aims to create equitable and balanced team-taught learning environments where teachers from two cultures work together to develop a shared syllabus. The courses give new contextual meaning to the ideas and texts they explore.

What is COIL?
