Davide Cali

Davide Cali grew up in Italy and adored comics from an early age, especially Asterix. At 22, he wrote and illustrated for the monthly Italian magazine LINUS, but a passion for storytelling eventually led him to writing children’s books.

Since his first books, which he wrote and illustrated, he has collaborated with many talented illustrators including Serge Bloch, Gianluca Foli and Anna Laura Cantone. Picture book awards include France’s prestigious Baobab Prize for the most innovative book of 2005, Honour Book in the American Library Association’s Batchelder Award for I Can’t Wait, and four awards for his graphic novel 10 Little Insects.

Over the last ten years he has gone on to create more than forty illustrated books for publishers in Austria, France, Italy, Argentina and Portugal. His books have been translated into twenty-five languages all over the world. Wilkins Farago is proud to be Davide’s Australian publisher.

The Enemyby Davide Cali & Serge BlochISBN 9780958557184 (hb)RRP AU$29.99

The Enemy is a profound, moving and poignant fable about two lonely soldiers facing each other across a barren desert battlefield. Are they the only soldiers left? How can they end the war? Just who is the enemy?

At a time when many of the world’s conflicts—including those in which Australia is an active participant—seem to be drifting interminably on, this is a book that offers hope that conflict and violence can give way to peace, compassion and understanding.

Challenging the traditional notion of what a picture book is and who it is for is this stark, poignant book ... [which] boldly explores the futility of war.’ - The Sunday Age

Impressive ... the award-winning team of Cali and Bloch seems set for further recognition ... Highly recommended.- Magpies

Cali is nothing if not diverse in his choice of subjects to explore. He treats them with keen perception and creativity. Allied with gifted illustra-tors, his books are always memorable.- Magpies Davide Cali on his 2012 tour of Australia

In this entertaining and ultimately touching tale of questions and answers, we are reminded that, for a child, the most important love is that which lies at the heart of your own family.

This is the kind of picture book that gets worn out just from being read, poured over, and loved to death.- Sunday Tasmanian

Teaching Kids to Readby Fay TranISBN 9780980607055 (pb)RRP AU$29.99ISBN 9780980607062 (epub)RRP AU$19.99• Give the gift of literacy

Australia’s National Curriculum

those with learning difficulties

• Now in its 4th printing

The gift of literacy is one of the most important gifts we can give our kids. It can quite literally transform their lives,

giving them the confidence and skills they will need throughout school and into their adult lives.

Likewise, poor literacy and numeracy can have a devastating effect on individuals and on our society. Every year more kids leave school without the skills they need to achieve their true potential.

As experienced literacy specialist Fay Tran argues in this timely and important book, no child should leave school without satisfactory literacy and numeracy skills.

The key is to teach them using PHONICS: the simple, effective and proven method described in this book.

Phonics is not only proven by modern academic research to be the most effective way of teaching literacy, it is also the method embedded at the heart of Australia’s National Curriculum.

Armed with the skills and techniques covered in this book, any adult can teach the kids in their care to read.

Whether you’re learning phonics for the first time or refreshing your skills, Teaching Kids to Read is an essential resource.

Kampung Boyby LatISBN 9780980607000 (pb)RRP AU$22.99

With masterful economy worthy of Charles Schultz, Lat recounts the life of Mat, a Muslim boy growing up in rural Malaysia in the 1950s: his adventures and mischief-making, fishing trips and religious education.

When Mat himself leaves for boarding school, he can only hope that his familiar kampung will still be there when he returns.

This delightful autobiographical graphic novel is hilarious and affectionate, with brilliant, super-expressive artwork that opens a window into ordinary Malay life.

When we published our first foreign kids book in English in 2005, we had no business plan to speak of and no publishing policy. We just loved the book.

Fortunately, kids did too: we sold enough copies to publish a second book, then another, and another …

Seven years on, we can look back on some marvellous, award-winning books from countries as diverse as Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Slovenia, New Zealand … and Australia.

In retrospect, a close look at our books does reveal a policy at work.

• We like stories that engage a child’s head and heart, that stimulate enquiry and enable them to safely explore their fledgling emotions

• We like strong, distinctive illustrations—artwork which not only complements the text, but adds extra dimensions, as you might expect from some of the world’s top illustrators

• We enjoy encouraging children to witness new cultures, new ways of seeing the world and new ways of expression

• We value books produced to the highest design and production standards; that ensure the creators’ work is shown to its best advantage

We also like to aid those who enjoy using of our books in classrooms, libraries and the home by providing helpful support materials, such as teachers’ notes, videos, downloads, a popular blog and an interactive wikisapce for kids.

As publishers, we believe that children (and those who care for them) deserve our respect. That means publishing the best books we can find for them from around the world.

We still love every book we publish. We hope you do too.
