Hygrocosmos

Country: Greece Language: Ancient Greek (Aristotle) Length: 50 min Synopsis: This film is an aesthetic approach of the world that inhabits the seabed, based on excerpts from Aristotle’s work Stories about Animals where the philosopher describes with accuracy, back in 350 B.C., the biology and ecology of a large number of sea animals. Almost 2,500 years later, contemporary hydrobiologists admit the truth of most of these statements and at the same time are at a loss to explain how people could observe life on the seabed in those times. After four years of underwater shooting, during which hundreds of litres of “bottled” oxygen were consumed, and hundreds of hours of sea diving, we managed to record a part of the sea organisms Aristotle speaks about. The film starts with the miracle of creation in a water drop. Aristotle compares the emersion of the dolphins to that of the divers. How little has our own evolution progressed? The narration is in ancient Greek and consists of excerpts from Aristotle’s work Stories About Animals. It is a meeting point of the southern and northern, the eastern and the western nature. It embraces the angular culture and hard struggle for the life style of the islanders. The Baltic Sea is in the middle of the fastest transition period of its history. The pearls of the Baltic Sea is a documentary in six parts, a story about a sailing trip, during which the islands of Åland, Bornholm, Gotland, Saaremaa, Hailuoto and Kotlin – the pearls of the Baltic Sea are rediscovered. Country: Germany Language: English Length: 51:40 min Synopsis:

In the southernmost part of Europe there is a land of contrasts. A land where the desert and the “Garden Eden” are only a stone’s throw away from one another. A land, where the people express their love for life and deep religious faith in colourful fiestas. The torrid midsummer sun, that shines unremittingly, is like a furnace which allows only the strongest survive. A purgatory, that many cannot escape. When the winter rains fall over the land, a great deluge pours into the wide swamp regions, while nearby Europe’s driest landscape blooms in soft colours. This film compares two of the most antithetic areas in Spain: The wet and green National Park “Donana” in the estuary of the Guadalquivir river and the driest place in Andalucia and even Europe called “Tabernas”. How do the animals survive in these two different areas – how do they deal with water and draught?. Above that this show includes the people of Andalucia with their Spanish lifestyle, their religious fiestas and their strong relationship to nature. Let us visit the still untamined Nature of Andalucia – where heaven meets hell.

However times change, and the heirs of the goose farmers do not exactly stand in line to take over the life stile of their fathers. So the goose farmers are afraid that the goose village will die out with them. We follow the first mating dance, the happy moment when the chicks are hatched and we learn about the problems with the fox. We experience everyday life with happiness and sorrow, and the goose farmers striving to breed a really superb goose right up until the last swing of the axe. This programme shows the loving, respectful and humorous relationship between men and their animals. A Shot Rang Out

Country: Norway Language: English Length: 24:20 min Synopsis: Some times we kill so easily. Some times we almost worship animals as sacred. The real hunter may do both at the same time. But with no big words, no grand gesticulation. The Nordic hunter does it in his own down-to-earth, unpretentious way. For the non-hunter it may be hard to comprehend the simultaneous absence of both compassion and evil. Just pure concentration. A state of total presence. Could 24 minutes of running videotape capture any of this? With no cuts, no editing, no effects, no fancy? Just a moose hunter with his dog, and the TV-presenter Trond Berg trying to interpret what is happening. Would that get us any closer to the evasive “spirit of hunting”? Wild Becomes Tame

Country: Norway Language: English Length: 24:04 min Synopsis: Humans are not very nice animals. This seems to be the common view among wild animals and birds. But there are some exceptions. What happens when a wild animal becomes tame of its own accord? It’s an incomparable feeling when a wild animal demonstrates trust. Interacting with a free fellow creature, who voluntarily lets you approach, is an adventure. A feather-light touch from a trustful titmouse or an enormous moose happily munching away at your offering, is deeply and instinctively moving. The fact that we enter into such relationships with different motives can’t be helped: we want proximity, they want food. In any case, trust from a wild animal adds an extra dimension to the natural experience. A Flowering Meadow in the Ocean

Country: Norway Language: English Length: 24:16 min Synopsis: It is summer far west of the Norwegian coast. Thick colourful carpets of flowers cover the solid rock islands. You can hardly find a more beautiful flowerbed in the world. How is this possible? It has to do with birds and salt, and the big climate system. Wind, rain and sea currents. The flowers, which grow here, are gardened by the mighty North Sea. Every autumn the flowers prepare for rough weather, and they don’t have to wait long before the storms are raging. Under these conditions the islands are sprinkled with salt water in an amount, which would kill most other living plants. “A Flowering Meadow in the Ocean” is a film about survival. It is a story of how some few flowers are able to manage what seem to be the most horrible conditions. The film explanes the difficult adaptation problems some of these plants have to solve. How they choose different strategies, how they depend on other species and how the ecological balance in kept up in this barren and windswept landscape. Solving Stonehenge

Country: England Language: English Length: 10 min. Synopsis: Stonehenge - older than the Great Pyramids - has often been called the Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World. It has been a mystery for centuries, puzzling, challenging, intriguing, and stirring the minds of people. A British engineer (and puzzle inventor) Bruce Bedlam believes he has made one of the most important archaeological, architectural and astronomical discoveries of modern time - that Stonehenge was actually a magnificent building - a temple of the highest magnitude. Bruce’s passionate pursuit of the greatest 3-D puzzle has done what conventional archaeology has failed to do - provide an explanation and models that explain the mystery of Stonehenge. He has built a 1/25 scale model of “his” building, and has also built working models of the megalithic machinery that the Bronze-Age Britons could have used to build such a structure. His work paints an exciting picture of what Stonehenge might have looked like, how it was built and how it might have been used. As a maverick expert, Bruce Bedlam forces us to recognise just how little we actually know about Stonehenge – who were our ancestors who built it, how did they dragged huge stones over such distances, how did they raised them – and why did they do it? Worlds Largest Shark

Country: England Language: English Length: 6 min. Synopsis: Suzy Quasnichka' Bristol based marine researcher and film-maker is joining the Shark Research Institute (SRI) survey 'Operation Whaleshark'. A team of SRI scientists and film makers is travelling to the remote region of Gudjarat in North West India. It was here, in 1999, that film maker Mike Pandey recorded the shocking images of local fishermen hunting and killing whale sharks. The film The Shores of Silence played an integral part in whale sharks being granted limited protection on the Appendix II CITES listing. Operation Whale Shark is going to Gudjarat to explore the feasibility of whale shark eco-tourism in the area. If the fishermen can generate a sustainable income from tourism they will not have to rely on hunting whale sharks.
