Hijab is an Arabic word meaning barrier or partition. It is the principle of modesty and includes behaviour as well as dress. The most visible form of hijab is the head covering that many
Muslim women wear. Which is the burkha and which is the
hijab?

‘Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty… And say to the believing women that they should draw their veils over their charms
and not display their beauty except to their husbands and other close family.’
One view is that wearing the Hijab liberates women. These women are not sex-objects in the eyes of lustful men! Men’s appreciation of them is because of their personality and not
their appearance.
But notice … The Qur’an says to
dress modestly – it does not say what to wear/not wear
What the Qur'an says …
1. Some wear full-body garments that only expose their eyes.
2. Some cover every part of the body except their face and hands.
3. Some believe only their hair or their cleavage is compulsory to hide, and others do not observe any special dress rules.
Differences of opinion …
So how should a Muslim woman dress?
The Qur’an says “to the believing women that they should draw their veils over their charms and not display their beauty except to their husbands and other close
family”.
Why do you think some countries have voted to ban the veil?
Ban the Burkha? There are five statements around the room, for and against wearing the Burkha. All should work with a partner to find
three of each.Extension: Some should work with a partner to make notes on all
five.
