What does target audience actually mean?

• In marketing and advertising, target

audience, is a specific group of people within

the target market at which a product or the marketing message of a product is aimed at,

so… • who is the target

audience for my film?

My Target Audience

• Demographics • Age - 15-25 • Gender- female

• Race- Caucasian / white • Ethnicity- British /

American

• Psychographics• Activity's and interests - retail therapy shopping, dance,

singing, music ( pop, R&B, Indie, punk jazz, house, garage, trip hop etc.), movies, films, reading, social

networking (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.). • Values - valuing good friends, healthy eating with the

occasional binge, going out raving or clubbing, shopping is a very important factor to my audience, sticking up for themselves and doing what they believe is right, being

themselves. • Behaviour and Attitudes - can suffer with extreme

paranoia and anxiety, some may suffer with mental disorders or may just feel slightly insecure about

themselves and may try to hide their weaknesses. They care about reputation but continue to try and be themselves despite peer pressure from friends.

Using the original information in regards to my target audience that I came up with at the beginning of this unit of work, this information explains how the film reflects those who are most likely to watch my film. What is interesting about this information is that the characters portrayed

within the film itself is similar to that of the target audience – allowing its views to create a connection with the characters on screen and their everyday lives.

their own children, making sure everyone in the household is happy.

Thinking about the impact that my film could have on my Target audience, A secondary audience is also created within the alternative group of people that my film is aimed at. With the film being mainly aimed at teenagers with it being based on the

life of a teenage girl, the parents of these teenagers may also become an important part of the audience. Due to the film containing an insight into the lives of both normal and stereotypical teenagers, parents will also be interested in watching the

film to find out more about what their kids could be experiencing every day, raising important questions that may remain unanswered. With the film surrounding around physiological disease and suffering, many parents or members of family have no idea that their son or daughter could be suffering with the issues raised in this film, giving the movie an important role in

society that may be able to help or save a teenagers life, with in the film Hannah not being given that luxury.

Social Class and Status of Target Audiences

• With the film portraying 2 sets of different audience types, it is clear that although their social class may be similar, they are in fact different.

• Using this table which indicates the different sections of demographics in society, we are able to decide which audience belongs to which social status group.

• With the vast amount of teenagers and young people ages 15-25 still considered as students, it is safe to say that the teenage part of my audience belongs to Grade D or E which is 32% of the British population (making the largest percentage in the table).

• With my secondary audience being the parents of these teenagers aged 35-45 and upwards, they could belong to at any one of these grades from C2 upwards.

• However, considering the material and story that the film portrays, it is stereotypically accepted that middle class parent would be more interested in watching a teenage drama that portrays urban grit /realism, which means they could be in either C2 or the AB Grade of social class, likely most C1.

• Because the movie is mainly aimed at teenagers it is hard to put a firm place on the demographics and physiographic of its secondary audience, however, i believe that this is as accurate a n estimate as possible.

Conclusion

• The Target of my film entitled Take My Soul Away is aimed at a young women aged 15-25, due to it portraying the essential elements of a teenage girls life and what can go wrong and what does go wrong

with a vast amount of people. • Because of the film being aimed at Teenagers, A secondary audience

is created, in the form or their parents. This is because the film portrays elements of teenage life that they may not understand and

may reveal a certain amount of information of what their son or daughter may be experiencing during their teenage life.
