Who cares for bugs?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjGgptJRG6M
insectes.
Il y a quelques jours, Garima Student m'a crit
propos de ma prsentation de La Mtamorphose - The
Metamorphosis.
We use insect sprays, electric traps, newspapers, or
one of our slippers. We have tents huge enough to
contain whole houses in order to smoke out theirinhabitants. Planes fitted with special devices fly over
the fields to spray them with insecticides.
Gardeners will rescue their roses at any price, tree
growers their orchards. Schools are at war against
head lice, restaurants against cockroach, kennels
against fleas.
Many people are afraid of spiders, other of wasps, and
many are afraid of both.
To summarize, human beings do not care about
insects.
Some days ago, Garima Student wrote to me about my
presentation of La Mtamorphose - The
Mtamorphosis. She asked why I said that the reader
was affected by her reading and underwent a
metamorphosis as well. Though she kept a very polite
tone, her opinion was that it was stupid to say so.
The first sentence of The Metamorphosis reads: "One
morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from
anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had beenchanged into a monstruous, verminous bug."
Given our usual way of dealing with insects, this one
should have been chased and killed at once. Do you
imagine this kind of third type encounter: some 80 cm
high cockroach (it can turn a key with its mouth when
it stands upright) moving towards you? The truth is
that you (and I, for sure) would call the rescue team.
But when you read Franz Kafka's short novel, you side
with Gregor. You think "he," not "it." You think that
his family is not kind enough, that he should be
allowed to dine at the family table, that his sistershould play the violin for him, etc.
In short, you are someone else. You have been
changed by The Metamorphosis.

A Life without Gmailhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUW1ffaK68I
courrier. Impossible. Gmail m'informe que mon
compte a t dsactiv.
monsieur Google. Je sens que ma vie ne va pas tre
facilite dans les prochains jours.
This morning, as usual, I want to read my mail.
Impossible. Gmail tells me that my account has been
cancelled. If I think it is an error, I have to give them the number
of my cellular and they will send a message. If I don't
have a cellular -which is my case- I must fill a form
and wait.
I am waiting.
These people may close my letter box, ok. They can
prevent me from sending and receiving emails, they
seem to be within their rights. But I doubt that they are
allowed to forbid me from accessing my mail, I mean
it I have received before the banning.
All my passwords are somewhere at mister Google's. I
feel that my life is not going to become easier in the
next days.

You are not a believer, you are a liar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR1oc2Jx9cE
Quand tu laisses
tomber quelque chose, a touche le sol seulement
parce qu'Allah le permet, dis-tu. Il pourrait l'arrter
quand il veut. Oui? Sr?
You don't believe that everything is in Allah's hands.
You are not a believer. You are a liar.
There are no natural rules, say you. When you drop
something, it hits the ground only because Allah
allows it, say you. He could stop it whenever he
wanted. Yes? Sure?
You don't believe a word of that rubbish. You don't
think that everything lies in Allah's hands.
I have seen someone who does believe that her life
does not belong to her, someone who lives according
to such a faith. I don't know her, I see how she
behaves. She crosses the streets without caring for the
traffic. She walks her way, wholly convinced that
whatever she does she cannot change her fate.
If Allah uses his will to rule the smallest event, what is
the use of promulgating laws? How is it that your
surgeons need to sterilize their instruments if it is
Allah who chooses to spread -or not to spread- an
infection? How is it that you need to bring up
children?
For some reasons, none pencil can hit the ground
without Allah's authorization, but cars are out his
reach.
Yeah, I see the hair-splitting arguments coming. Youmustn't put your god to the test (either). What allows
you to think that your choice (to wait for the green
light, for example) is not the one that puts him to the
test? Are you presuming that it is more difficult for
him to rescue you than to kill you? You wouldn't dare!
And anyway, if everything is really in his hands, he
has already showed that he was perfectly able to make
a car go off its road in order to make it run over law-
abiding passerbys. You think that what he wants is you
obey to the traffic lights because it is what you want,
because it is your best chance of surviving.
Or, maybe, you think that Allah needs your help? You
take some decisions in order to lighten his burden.
How kind! And of course, it is a pure coincidence that
the decisions that help him are also those that suit you.
You'd almost think you are Allah's god.
