Dark Matters are afoot at the Whitworth as we saygoodbye to summer and projections in our park. Withnights closing in the flickering images are all inside, aspart of an exhibition that explores the science as wellas the wonder of digital art making.

With artists from across the globe including newcommissions by Ja-Young Ku (Korea) and Brass Art(Manchester), visitors will encounter the playful and themenacing dimensions of a world of shadow and light.

With a lively After Hours programme and a ShadowLab for all our family visitors there will be much tocapture the imagination as we hurtle forwards to the shortest day. Enjoy the darkness.

A permanent sculpture by the celebratedFrench artist Cyprien Gaillard has beencommissioned by the Whitworth andinstalled in the centre of Whitworth Park. The work is a traditional obelisk shape, and is made from recycled brick andconcrete – the brick from recentlydemolished late nineteenth-centuryhouses in the Bowes Street area of MossSide, and the concrete from the remainsof the1960s flats that were locatedaround Bonsall Street in Hulme.

The obelisk has been made possiblethrough the assistance of CouncillorsMary Murphy and Alastair Cox,Manchester City Council, Friends ofWhitworth Park, Manchester MetropolitanUniversity and GB Building Solutions. It wasfabrictated by Stockley and ThorpPrecast, with aggregate produced byOfferton Sand and Gravel.

Encounter phantoms in the mirror, captured spirits and playfulshadows as the Whitworth’sspaces become populated byworks of darkness and wonder.

Exploring the impact of scientific, digital and mechanical inventionupon visual culture, Dark Mattersbrings together the work of teninternationally acclaimed artistsfrom across the globe whoengage with ideas of darknessand shadow through a range oftechnologies. In an exhibitionpopulated by half-seen spectres, visual riddles and distortedreflections, these artists explorethemes of time, illusion andmemory through a variety ofmedia and machinery.

The exhibition includes a newlycommissioned installation byKorean artist Ja-Young Ku whoengages with the ghostlyremnants of his former actionsthrough performance andprojection. Works by Daniel Rozincombine state-of-the-art digitalsoftware with wooden machineryand suspended silk to create artobjects of technological wonder.R. Luke DuBois’ sparklingcomputer-generated version ofcinematic romance and Barnaby

5 November 2011 – 15 January 2012

Our globalised contemporary world has been made possible and shaped fundamentally by international air travel; but at whatcosts to our sense of place and our wellbeing? This multi-mediainstallation explores the clash between traditional farming life inJapan and the technology and economy of international travel.

Two remaining farming families still live at the end of the runway at Narita International Airport in Japan. This exhibition follows onefamily who have refused to move elsewhere despite pressure fromthe authorities since the planning and construction of the airport inthe 1970s.

Air Pressure uses sound recordings, on-site and archive film, torepresent the sonic experience of living and working on this farm, which is surrounded by the airport’s infrastructure and constantlymonitored by surveillance and sound measuring mechanisms. AirPressure allows the audience a vicarious, immersive experience ofthe site and an opportunity to address debates on the impact ofaircraft noise on our lives.

The installation is being created by Rupert Cox, from the Departmentof Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester, AngusCarlyle, a sound artist and Reader at the University of the Arts,London, in collaboration with Professor Kozo Hiramatsu, Japan’sforemost acoustic scientist and UK president of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.w: http://airpressure.posterous.com

Air Pressure is supported by a Wellcome Trust Arts Award. In partnership with Asia Triennial Manchester 2011, initiated by Shisha,a festival of current contemporary visual art and craft from Asia. For more information visit: w: www.asiatriennialmanchester.com w: www.shisha.net
