I must coness I love movies. Bill

and I use to go to the local movietheater at night as kids and watch theBlob, the Ting, the Fly, etc and thenrun home aerwards beore thecreatures got us (or the police orbeing out aer curew.) I love justabout any kind o movie (except

horror movies or some reason). IN HIS ISSUE we havean article on movies and chess.

I happen to see a great chess movie this month calledQueen to Play a French movie with English subtitles.

Te lm stars Sandrine Bonnaire as a Frenchchambermaid on the island o Corsica. She develops an

interest in chess. She has been cleaning the house o anAmerican doctor (played by Kevin Kline in his rstFrench-speaking role), and he begins helping her practiceand improve. She must deal with her growing ascinationwith the game and its confict with her husband andteenaged daughter.

Te lm had a national release in France on August 5,2009 and was released in the United States on April 1,2011.

I usually dont do lm reviews but what a great movie.Tere is even one scene when Bonnaire and Kline arecalling out chess moves to each other without a board(okay Bill what opening is it)

Also Bill has written an excellent article on Chess in theFuture. Who would o thought that we would be playingchess with people across the world via computers andsmart phones. Check it out and see what the uture mightpossibly hold or the age old game o chess.

Check out our picture pages on chess themed desserts sowhile you are watching a movie on V and making a moveon your iphone you can take a bite o delicious chocolatecheese chess cake. Enjoy!

hess clubs used to orm the oundations

o organized chess. here used to bethousands o chess clubs in the 20th cen-tury, beore the Internet. It was the chess

club that the master developed his skill and theaverage chess player improved his game. he chessclub has the potential to hold rated and unratedchess tournaments and matches, and various othertypes o completion.

As a past Secretary, reasurer, and President otwo state chess associations (North Carolina andOhio) and the President o chess clubs in NorthCarolina, Dayton, Ohio, Palo Alto, Caliornia, San

Antonio, exas, Melbourne, Florida, and a dozenmilitary bases, I have been involved in creatingand running many local chess clubs over the past40 years. Here are a ew helpul hints in starting alocal chess club.

Starting a local chessclub usually originatedamong a ew riendswho play chess at work, school, or in the homes.he riends decide toorganize their chess ac-tivities and start a club. I have ound chess playersat work by playing at lunchtime with a chess clock.Chess players will lock to watch and also play blitzchess. I have also played in local tournaments andound local players that were interested in a club,or a school that had several chess players, but noclub.

I the group o players want to get as many newplayers as possible to join the new chess club, it isusually necessary to hold a preliminary meeting todiscuss and adopt resolutions covering the details

that will be included in the clubs Constitution. A-

ter the initial meeting, another meeting should beheld to adopt the clubs Constitution, elect o icers(usually a minimum o President, Vice-President,Secretary, and reasurer), and the completion oany other business.

Arrangements should be made to hold the pre-liminary meeting at a suitable time and place. Itcan be held in a private home, but it may be betterto hold it at a Community Center, or library, orperhaps a restaurant or ca, especially i they aregoing to eat there. I have had small chess clubswhere the members met at someones house, then

rotated to other members. I have ound rooms notused in community centers, libraries, and book-stores to hold chess meetings.

You have to decide i membership is restrictedor not and i there are anydues. A college club mayrestrict the members tostudents and aculty. Acompany may restrict themembers to employeesonly. Many chess clubshave no restrictions at all,

or allow guest membership. You have to decide where the club will meet, and

how oten. Inquiries should be made to determinethe availability and rental o a meeting place, un-less you can ind a library or community center orbook store or restaurant or school that would giveyou a meeting place or chess. Usually a club meetsonce a week, but you may try or several times aweek as not everyone is available on certain days orweekends.

You have to decide what amount will be charged

Starting a local chess club usually origi-nates among a few friends who play chess

at work, school, or in the homes.

or annual dues. You need to anticipated an-nual expenses, including rent, buying chess setsand boards, chess clocks, score sheets, tourna-ment prizes, stationary, postage, purchase o chessbooks, advertising, cost o a chess magazine i sodesired, etc. A club needs income to prosper andgrow. Some clubs charge over $100 a year, whileothers charge as little as $10 a year ($20 withmagazine subscription).

Special, low dues should be proposed or juniormembers. Young players must be encouraged tojoin the club. You may also want to think aboutlower dues to women. A chess club with women isalways more successul than an all-male chess club.

Resolutions should be written that cover thename and purpose o the club, the membershipqualiications, the meeting place, the days andtimes o meetings, and the membership dues. Ithe resolutions are successul in passing, then aConstitution should be drated and arrangements

made to nominate the permanent oicers o thenew club. here should be lots o examples ochess constitutions online at various chess clubsaround the world.

Word-o-mouth advertising may be suicientto bring together enough players to start a smallclub, but paid advertising and publicity in the localnewspaper may help. Many newspapers will print(paper or online) such an item in their society orneighborhood news columns. I there is a chesscolumn in a local paper (very rare now), the edi-tor o the chess column should

be given all the details o thechess club. Also check onlinechess sites on the Internet. Manyonline chess sites, such as www.chess.com, allow you to advertisea chess club or tournament. Youmay also want to make up ly-ers o some kind and post themaround town in libraries, schools, community centers, etc.

You may want to call the local V and radio sta-tions and ind out how to get them to do a public

service notice on a chess event or club meeting.Ive been able to get ree radio time when announc-ing a chess tournament or a meeting o a chessclub.

I the names and addresses o chess players inthe vicinity are known, or can be obtained, a letteror email should be sent to each player, inviting himor her to attend the chess club. he USCF mayhave a list o names and addresses o members inyour vicinity or sale.

I you are holding a preliminary meeting, the

meeting should be conducted on a semi-ormalbasis. You may want to observe the basic rules oparliamentary procedure, which can be ound inRoberts Rules o Order or similar book, or ound

online.A resolution should be oered, giving the name

and purpose o the chess club. For example:Resolved, that an organization to be known as

the XXX Chess Club shall be ormed, and that thepurposes o the organization shall be to enable itsmembers to play chess, to conduct tournamentsand matches, and to provide instruction, entertain-ment, and social lie in chess or its members.

A resolution should be seconded, and the chair-man may ask i the group is ready to vote. Ques-

tions may be answered, and any

suggested amendments are votedon. When all discussion is over, the chairman will ask the meet-ing to vote on the resolution (asamended, i any changes have beenadopted). I the majority votes inthe airmative, the resolution ispassed and another resolution maybe oered. A committee may be

appointed to drat a Constitution to be voted on inthe next meeting.

Ater all the business and i nothing else comesup, a motion is made to adjourn to meet at a cer-tain time and place. I seconded and adopted, themeeting adjourns.

I you do not wish to have so much ormality, create a chess club and a program o activities tostimulate the interest o the members and makethem want to attend the sessions. Something newand dierent may be planned or each meeting, orspecial events may be scheduled once a month.

Most important are the competitive activities othe chess club. Every member must be given every

opportunity to play in various kinds o chess tourna-ments, matches, and other contests.

One activity is to have a chess club ladder contest.A players position on the ladder indicates his rank.Te strongest player is at the top o the ladder. He isthe number one player. Players move up and downas they win or lose against other players on the lad-der. A contestant can challenge a player o higherrank to ght or his position on the ladder. I haveseen peg boards made with the members listed inorder o strength. Some are vertical and others arein the orm o a pyramid.

A more modern method o conducting a laddercompetition uses rating points to rank a player. Rat-ings can be established rom players who are mem-bers o the US Chess Federation and have a USCFrating, or FIDE rating. Some online sites have arating system, but they may be inated than normalover-the-board ratings rom rated tournaments. Al-ways ask any potential new member and all existing

members i they have a rating (USCF, FIDE, Corre-spondence, blitz, online site, etc).Developing a team spirit is one o the best ways

to hold a chess club together. A member who getson a team represents his club. He now plays or theclub, not just himsel. I there are other chess clubsaround, then get involved or organize inter-clubmatches. Matches can also be arranged betweenteams composed o members o the club itsel.

ournament play is usually the major reason orclub membership. Practically every chess club holdsan annual tournament or the club championship,

and perhaps a trophy or plaque to the winner. Youcan also have gambit tournaments, 5-minute chesstournaments, random chess tournaments, 30-30tournaments (30 moves in 30 minutes), junior tour-naments, odds tournaments, etc.

Special events, such as a simultaneous exhibi-tion by a grandmaster (i available), or just a strongplayer, is always a good idea. I you do get a visit-ing master, it might be a good idea to invite the localmedia or the publicity. op players usually charge$20 - $40 a board. In the past, I have had ormer USchampion GM Walter Browne, GM Viktor Korch-

noi, GM Larry Christiansen, GM Eduard Gueld,GM Eugenio orre, and International Master JohnDonaldson all give simuls at one o my chess clubs.I also had GM George Koltanowski do his amousknights tour. And I have done 50-board simulsmysel.

I you get a club going, take pictures o membersat club meetings and tournaments, and put them ona bulletin board and on the Internet.

Finally, nd volunteers that will help you withclub activities. Dont try to do all o it yoursel.

Tere seems to be more chesssets or chess reerences in moviesnowadays. Not all o it is good. And chess is always good or themovie mistakes and bloopers, withimpossible positions, the chess-board set up wrong, a chess clocknot used correctly or the buttonbanged, or just bad historical reer-

ences to chess.Perhaps the rst time chess ap-

peared in the movies was in 1903

in a movie called A Chess Dispute. It was made by R. W. Paul and hisPauls Animatograph Works o Eng-land. wo men are playing a chessgame in a restaurant when oneman makes a move while the otherman is distracted. Te distractedplayer looks back at the board anddisputes the chess move. Te two

get into an argument, throw drinksat each other, get into a ght, thenboth all below the cameras view.

You next see their hats, shoes, andsome clothing being tossed in theair into camera view. Finally, themanager o the restaurant entersand lis these two disheveled play-ers into view.

Since then, probably over athousand movies, television showsand commercials have eatured

some sort o chess theme or reer-ence.

Rather than a chess scene orsome sort o chess reerence, thereare some movies that had a chessplot. One o the rst movies with achess plot was Chess Fever, releasedin 1926 and directed by VsevolodPudovkin. It is the most importantchess lm o the silent era. It wasmade in Moscow in 1925, during

the great Moscow International.Te main character is played byVladimir Fogel. He is supposed toget married, but he is too addictedto chess to get married. Hejust happens to be playing in theMoscow International. She tellshim how chess has made her hatethe world. Capablanca says, Iunderstand how you eel. I cannotstand the thought o chess when Iam with a lovely lady. He takes herto the chess tournament and theyboth enter the building o the tour-nament. Te movie shows scenes

rom the tournament and playerslike orre, Reti, Marshall, Yates, artakower, Stahlberg, Spielmanand Grueneld. Te lady discoversthat chess isnt so bad aer all.

Another early movie with achess plot was Te Bishop MurderCase, released in 1930 and basedon the novel by S.S. Van Dine. Techaracter, Philco Vance (Basil Rath-bone) is a chess-playing detective

and he takes on a mur-der case in which themurderer (only knownas Te Bishop) useschess as clues. Chessbishops are le at thecrime scenes. In onescene, Vance examines

a chess position andsays the bishop wasone move away romcheckmate. One othe characters, JohnPardee (Charles Qua-

termaine) is a wealthy chess player, inventor o the Pardee Gambit, andmember o the Manhattan ChessClub (his character is rom Isaac

Rice and the Rice Gambit).Another early movie with chessclues includes Above Suspicion, released in 1943. Tis stars FredMacMurry and Joan Craword asRichard and Francis Myles who getclues in nding someone with chesspieces.

More modern detective mov-ies with a chess plot include NightMoves (1975) and Knight Moves

    (1992).

One o the best movies with achess allegory is Te Seventh Seal, released in 1957. Te movie wasdirected by Ingmar Bergman. MaxVon Sydow plays Antonius Block,a disillusioned knight returninghome rom the Crusades in the14th century. He runs into Death(Bengt Ekerot) and the knight chal-

lenges Death in a game o chess tobargain or his lie. As long as thechess game continues, the knightcan live. It also gives some time toother olks to escape as ar as pos-sible rom Death. One small detail:the board is set up wrong, with thedark square to the right instead othe light square to the right.

Now i you want to see a moviewith God playing the Devil inchess, then go see Bedazzled, released in 2000. Tere is a scenewhere the Devil (Elizabeth Hur-ley) plays chess against God (EricDearborn).

Perhaps the most amous chessmovie is Searching or BobbyFischer, released on August 11,

1993. Tis was really more aboutjunior chess and Josh Waitzkin, than Bobby Fischer, who has nowbeen ound and living in Iceland.Details o Josh and the movie .

Another chess movie with achess plot is Te Luzhin Deence, released in April, 2000. Te movieis based on the novel Te Deenseby Vladimir Nabokov. In real lie, this hap-pened to Kurt von Bardeleben, whojumped out o his window o hisboarding house in 1924 in Berlin atthe age o 62. Grandmaster Jona-than Speelman was the technicaladvisor or the le, but the creditshave him as John Speelman.

Some movies with big nameshave the mov-ie stars play-ing or study-ing a gameo chess. InCasablanca, released in

    1943, Hum-phrey Bo-gart (a real

chess expert)is studying a chess position. He isplaying chess in Knock On Anydoor, released in 1949.

In 3 Godathers, released in1948, John Wayne (a weak chessplayer in real lie), is shown play-ing chess against the sheri. John

Wayne is also playing chess inMcLintock!, released in 1963.

One movie, about a movie star, has a chess scene.Te movie Ray,released in 2004,has a scene whereRay Charles (JamieFoxx) is playingchess in the hospi-

tal with the doctorwhile recoveringrom his drug ad-diction. It is basedon Ray Charlesstrue story wholearned chess in1965 in a hospital tohelp him with his heroin addiction.

In some movies, its not good towin the chess game. Te 3 Worlds

o Gulliver, released in 1960,showed a chess scene where Gulliv-er beat the giant king in a game ochess. Not a good idea.

Some movies eature the ac-tors playing computer chess. Tiswould include 21 grams, releasedin 2003, in which Sean Penn plays

Chessmaster while in a hospital bedand Assassins, released in 1995, inwhich Sylvester Stallone plays com-puter chess while waiting or email.Perhaps the most amous is 2001: ASpace Odyssey, released in 1968.Te movie ea-tures the HAL9000 computer

playing chesswith one o theastronauts andannouncing amate in two. Itwas actually amate in threeand the com-puters descriptive notation waswrong. Te computer should havesaid Queen to Bishop Six instead o

Queen to Bishop Tree. Te nalposition was based on a real game,Roesch vs. Willi Schlage in Ham-

    burg, 1910.Another movie

eaturing a computerthat plays chess wasAround the World Un-der the Sea, released in1965, produced by Ivanors. Tere is a chessscene with Hank Stahl(Keenan Wynn) playinga computer as Dr. DougStandish (Lloyd Bridges)looks on.

Another movie withcomputer chess is Te

Bone Collector, released in 1999.Denzel Washington plays computerchess. Tere is also the movie Te

Ting, released in 1982, where R.J.MacReady (Kurt Russell) plays achess computer called Chess Wiz-ard. In the Lonely Guy, released in1984, a chess player is playing withone o the Chess Challengers com-puters that moves it own pieces. InPet Shop, released in 1994, a boyplays a chess computer. In Copycat, released in 1995, there is a chesscomputer that beats Dr. HelenHudson (Sigourney Weaver).

A chess playingrobot and advancedchess board analysisby a computer can beound in Bicenten-nial Man, released in

    1999.One o the more

interesting variantso chess was ound inAbandon, released in2002. Tere is a chessscene where they

play blitz chess with the chess clockBetween moves, the other playermust take a shot o vodka.

    Some chess movies have mis-

takes that include scenes where thechess pieces are there, then theydisappear in another camera shot, then they appear again. An exampleo this is ound in Ace Ventura:When Nature Calls, released in1995. Near the end o the movie,Chancellor Vincent Cadby (SimonCallow) is studying a chess posi-tion. Ace Ventura (Jim Carrey)

moves a piece and you hear pieceshitting the oor. Te camera anglesshow pieces, then disappearingpieces, then pieces again, and noneon the oor.

One o the weirdest opponentshad to be ound in Te AddamsFamily, released in 1991. GomezAddams (Raul Julia) played chessagainst Ting (the disembodiedhand).

1996 has a chess theme with a chessgame being played in a park in NewYork at the beginning o the movie.

Another movie that takes achess position rom a real game isFrom Russia With Love, released in1963. Tis James Bond lm uses aposition rom Spassky-Bronstein,28th USSR Championship, Len-

ingrad 1960. Te movie playersare the Russian player Kronsteen(Vladek Sheybal) and the Canadianplayer McAdams (Peter Mad-den). Te mistake in the movie isthat they orgot to add two criticalcenter pawns (d4 and c5) to theposition, and the game could havedrawn. Te movie is based on thenovel by Ian Fleming. AnotherJames Bond novel, Moonraker,

contains reerences to Paul Morphy, but that was not in the movie.

For a chess scene o man againstan animal, check out Back to theFuture II, released in 1990. Tere isa scene with Marty McFly (MichaelJ. Fox) making a chess move againstCopernicus the dog. Or there isMerry Andrew, released in 1958. Ithas Andrew Larabee (Danny Kaye)playing chess against a chimpanzee. In Sinbad and the Eye o a iger,

released in 1997, PrincessFarah (Jane Seymore) isplaying chess against ababoon. In Lucky Luke, released in 1991, LuckyLuke (errence Hill) playschess against his horse.

    Bad Company, re-

leased in 2002, has achess hustler. Chris Rockplays Jake Hayes, a blackchess hustler in a NewYork City park. He playsblitz chess or moneywhile talking on the cellphone, doing business. In one scene, he says checkmate. But it is not checkmate. Te player

le his king under attack, and Jaketook the king with another piece, and just said checkmate. Te chessclocks are always set wrong. I heis playing 10-minute chess or $20,then the clocks should be set at5:50 or ten minutes beore the agalls. In the movie, one scene showsthe chess clock set 10 minutes aerthe hour, and another scene with anew opponent, the clocks are set 20

minutes aer the hour. During thechess scenes, the chess pieces movearound dramatically in dierentcamera shots.

Most chess sets ound in themovies are the standard board andperhaps Staunton designed piecesor gothic pieces. One movie with apocket chess set and peg chess setis Te Big Sleep, released in 1978.Tere are chess scenes where PhilipMarlowe (Robert Mitchum) pulls

out a pocket chess set toanalyze a position. Temovie is based on the novelby Raymond Chandler, achess player.

For horror movies, oneo the best is Te Black Cat,released in 1934. It eaturesHjalmar Poelzig (Boris Kar-

lo) playing chess with Dr. VitusWerdegast (Bela Lugosi). Karlo

checkmates Lugosi in an impossibleposition. Te outcome o the gamedetermined i one o the guests,Joan Alison (Julie Bishop), wouldbe sacriced as part o the BlackMass ritual.

Comedies with chess scenesinclude Blazing Saddles, AnimalCrackers and Monkey Businesswith the Marx Brothers.

    For wizardry and chess, there

is Harry Potter and the SorcerersStone, released in 2001. Te chil-dren must win a chess game to con-tinue their quest against the giantstone pieces. Te chess position wascomposed by Jeremy Silman or themovie. Checkmate was announced, but there was no checkmate.

What will chess be like in 10,

    been there), digital chess clocks,

    ebooks, databases, YouTube, or

    There will always be chess-

    back several hundred years. Chess

    still has 25 x 10^115 possible

chess positions. For all practicalpurposes, there are an innite

    number of possibilities in chess.

In a few years, there will be

    very little printed chess books

    and magazines. Everything will

    be digitized and found online

or in a 15 terabyte removable

hard drive. In 100 years or less,

    every chess book and magazine

that has ever been published will

have been scanned and availableto anyone on a device or through

will be wireless). You will have

    disposal running

    on your 4 THz

    Book Review

by Yochanan Aek and Emmanuel Neimanpublished by New In Chess 2011. 240 pages.

Tis is an interesting chess book that tries to explainhow to discover blind spots in chess and why playersoverlook simple wins. Te thesis o the book is thatthere are certain moves that are more difcult thanothers to see, almost invisible. Tisinvisibility is demonstrated by the actthat these moves may go unnoticed

by both players, and remains unseenthroughout the game and even aersubsequent analysis. Te purpose othe book is to show the reader themechanisms that can make a moveinvisible.

Te authors make a big distinc-tion between an invisible moveand a blunder. A blunder is a bigmistake, like leaving the queenhanging in one move. Such majorblunders are requently decisive orthe result o the game. Invisiblemoves generally do not aect thenal result. Both players couldhave missed it.

Tere are our chapters, brokenup into objective invisibility andsubjective invisibility.

Chapter 1 deals with hard-to-see moves. Tey can bequiet moves and positions, intermediate moves, alignment

problems, and even orget-ting the rules. For a beginner, knight movesare harder to see than rook moves. Even grandmastersmiss a backward rook move more than a orward move, and it is harder or them to see a horizontal move that avertical move. Te more brutal a moves is (a check, acapture, a direct threat), the easier it is to see. A seri-ous player begins has analysis by checking all the orcedsequences rst, and the easiest to calculate. Te harder, invisible moves, are more difcult to nd, but becomeobvious once you see them.

Chapter 2 deals with geometrically invisible moves

such as the horizontal eect, changing wings, backwardmoves, backward knight moves, pins and sel-pins. Teauthors say that humans have a bias in avor o or-ward moves, and we overlook backward moves. We

think o orward moves as good and backwardmoves as bad. Tere-ore, backward and even

horizontal moves arerejected, perhaps even ona subconscious level. Teyare invisible to us, neverreaching consciousness.I such moves do suggestthemselves, we usuallydismiss them since they losea tempo.

Chapter 3 is called invis-ible moves or positionalreasons. It deals with pawnstructures, weakening o thekings deenses, unexpectedexchanges (that get me a lot),unusual position o a piece, and anti-developing moves.

Chapter 4 is called invis-ible moves or psychologicalreasons. Tere is a sectionon blunders in World ChessChampionship matches. It alsohas a section on orward moves

in deense and backward attack-ing moves.Te end o the book has a test

o positions (53 exercises) and index o players. Tebook has hundreds o diagrams as well as many uniqueexamples and instructive explanations o invisible movesand how to discover your blind spots in chess. For eachdiagram, the question is the same: What is the bestmove or White or Black? Assume that probably theplayer was not able to nd it in the a
