Dear Parents,

At Whitby, our goal is to guide students to develop a true passion for learning and gain the intellectual, emotional and social skills to succeed in today’s global community. Our summer programs are designed for maximum fun while providing engaging opportunities for learning you won’t find anywhere else.

On the following pages, you’ll read about the distinctive programming offered on our campus during the summer weeks. We recognize that play is an important aspect of summer for children and their families, so these programs are morning only. These academic programs encourage, support and challenge each student’s potential while making the experience enjoyable, rewarding and productive.

Use the “At A Glance” table below to determine whether the programs you are interested in run for one, two or three weeks at a time. We’ve indicated with bold circles throughout the brochure which weeks of Whitby Summer 2012 each program is offered. Please note the two-week commitment for all workshops. The thirty hours devoted to these compelling workshops will enhance and enrich student’s skills and better prepare them for the next school year.

We look forward to having your children with us this summer!

Sincerely, Jim Irzyk, Director

In our relaxed summer environment, children develop friendships, become more self-sufficient, and have fun learning.

These two-week intensive programs in writing, math and writing research papers develop skills that will boost academic performance and encourage overall academic confidence.

Our Wildcat Sports program is an ideal way to learn about sports and sportsmanship, advance sports skills, and engage in fun and active games that will develop patience, discipline, and confi-dence. No matter the level of experience, children will enjoy plenty of time on the playing field.

This program will engage children in interesting and diverse courses of their choice—either one or two classes per morning. Where else can you play Quidditch like Harry Potter or investigate crime scenes? Wildcat Sports Entering Grades 1–8, 9 AM – 12 Noon, Fee: $270 per week

Fun and Friendship through teamworkWe teach young children about sports and sportsmanship—regard-less of their athletic ability, skill and previous exposure to a sport. Wildcat Sports provides an atmosphere for making new friendships and learning to get along with one another in a group setting. Our counselors can help advance the skills of those who are good at a particular sports and also instill confidence in those who are new to a sport. Fun and fitness is promoted through games, special events and the wide variety of athletic activities.

Program Mission and GoalOur mission is to help every child become better at sports and learn what it means to compete with dignity, to play as a team, to make new friends, encourage others, and develop patience, discipline and confidence through sports. The goal of the program is to have all campers gain confidence and improve their skills in each sport or activity. Each age group receives instruction based on their skill level for any particular sport. We en-courage campers to improve their skills in comparison to their own initial skills level—not against the skill levels of others. During activi-ties, counselors stress teamwork, cooperation and collaboration.

the guiding principles of Wildcat Sports are:• Building self-confidence through skill development and

knowledge of the rules of the games• Emphasizing fun by making new friends and learning to work

together• Instilling pride in your progress—no matter the level of ability• Teaching fair competition by not only knowing the rules but

playing by them• Encouraging leadership both individually and as part of a team• Advancing sportsmanship and good citizenship by respecting

others on and off the fields.

Daily ScheduleEach day of Wildcat Sports features 3 distinct activity periods, plus adequate breaks to keep our young athletes hydrated and ready to move.

CoachDirector David Burns is a Whitby faculty member and coach, former NCAA Division I athlete and has been a coach/instructor for over 20 years.

uniformsParticipants are required to wear the Wildcat Sports t-shirt. Each participant will receive two t-shirts at registration.

Whitby’s expectation is that all students will complete the workshop. If a stu-dent departs prior to meeting all classes and course requirements, they will not receive a rating or teacher report. The primary emphasis for all workshops is on the benefits gained, not on the grade/rating. However, ratings are used to signify the level of achievement and effort during the workshop.
