Page 2: whitby pavilion summer 2013

We’re delighted to bring you news of Spring and Summer 2013 at Whitby Pavilion.

Our first Comedy Festival takes place in April – with some great names including Jenny Éclair, Chris Ramsey and The Everly Pregnant Brothers plus three top comics appearing at The Last Laugh Comedy Roadshow. We hope this will be the start of a brand new festival for Whitby going forwards.

The cinema is going from strength to strength with some great attendances – we will be looking at this in more detail to see how we can continue the growth here.

Any ideas or feedback are welcome!

Meanwhile the local theatre groups continue to work hard to bring a variety of shows and there are some crackers taking place this year. Please check the website for forthcoming films and shows.

I am meeting regularly with the Friends of Whitby Pavilion and have received some lovely feedback – it seems people have appreciated the consistent winter opening hours.

We are also due to reopen the Box Office area – up the stairs or in the lift from the café area – to facilitate buying tickets at the Pavilion. We have a new ticketing system (and not without its challenges!) – but ‘we’re getting there’ and the new high speed internet link due in April should fix the problems we have had.

Do come and see us – remember you don’t need a ticket to pop in for coffee or lunch! It’s a gorgeous stroll across the sands and well worth it for the stunning views.

Please check out the website, ‘like’ us on facebook and ‘follow’ us on twitter to keep up to date with our developments and programme.

JUST HAPPY TO BE HERE PRESENTS

APRIL IN PARISBY JOHN GODBER

Bet and Al lead a quiet, humdrum life in their small Yorkshire home until Bet wins a ‘Romantic Breaks’ competition in a magazine. The prize, a holiday in Paris, represents their first experience abroad and has profound effects on the way they look at the world around them once they return home. They sort out French cuisine, wrestle with their phrase book, and fend off would-be muggers on the Metro in this hilarious depiction of the English abroad.

MIKE HARDINGME, A GUITAR AND SOME MORE DAFT STUFF

Described by Billy Connolly as “the funniest man in England” and widely acknowledged as “the grandfather of alternative comedy”. And now, after 15 years concentrating on writing and broadcasting, fell-walking and fly fishing, Mike Harding is back on the road. With a guitar and a back catalogue of more than forty years of material to draw on, you’re invited to join Mike for an evening of daft stories, silly songs and the odd comic monologue.

ME & ME DADIn a word, Dave Lees’ dad Pete is terrible. Good at Subbuteo; hopeless with spaghetti. So when Jean, Dave’s mum, dies, Dave does the decent thing – he puts his failing acting career on hold and moves back home to teach his dad how to cook.

Fighting memories (and occasionally each other) and risking the sanity of relatives and neighbours, the pair set to the task with gusto. Can their relationship survive? Or is this is one kitchen nightmare even Gordon Ramsay couldn’t fix?

Professional Grumpy Old Woman, writer and panto star; Eclair has been round the block that many times she’s lost count.

You may recognise her from Loose Women where she is happy to be one of ‘The Coven’. She is also a Pilates Ninja and a disgrace in her own kitchen.

Touring as a stand-up gives Eclair enormous pleasure. It also gives her dreadful varicose veins, but most importantly it gives her partner (St Geof) a bit of a break. Help him keep her out of the house, by supporting this show!

The Last Laugh Comedy Roadshow returns to Whitby Pavilion with the first show in its new Thursday evening slot with another three top acts on the bill:

PLUS NEW AND CLASSIC COMEDY

FILMS THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND

FRI 19 APR PT / 8PM £15

A national treasure in their native Sheffield, the Brothers playful tampering of classic songs has won them friends and fans far and wide. Six Sheffielders with ukeleles and a big bloke with a lethal line in lyrics. The Brothers feature a couple of familiar faces in artist Pete McKee and Phoenix Nights’ Toby Foster. They cover songs by the likes of The Clash, Arctic Monkeys and The Human League creating Ukulele entertainment for the masses.

‘Stadium Uke’ favourites include Chip Pan on Fire (Kings of Leon Sex on Fire) and No Oven, No Pie (Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry) which brings together two great loves of singer Shaun‘s life: reggae music and pastry-based foodstuffs!

Following complete sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival and London’s Soho Theatre, and due to overwhelming popular demand, Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and star of BBC Two’s brand new sitcom, Hebburn, extends his nationwide tour into spring 2013 and includes a date at Whitby Pavilion!

How did we get here? Elaborately laid plan, or just pure fluke? Who knows… do you feel lucky? Perhaps you should. As seen on Celebrity Juice, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Russell Howard’s Good News.

SUMMER ENDBY ERIC CHAPPELL

Emily Baines and May Brewer share a room in a retirement home. Emily’s previous room-mate, Bella, died not long ago. Iron-willed but forgetful, Emily is certain that Bella was murdered by one of the carers, and she has evidence to prove it. It is not until May is attacked that the mystery is solved.

JUST HAPPY TO BE HERE PRESENTS

CURTAIN UP!BY PETER QUILTER

Curtain Up! is the hilarious story of five women who inherit equal shares in a dilapidated theatre and plan to bring it back to life again.

They try various fund-raising schemes but their most ambitious is to hold a concert featuring local talent and a world-famous star who agrees to appear for no fee! However, their plans go awry and it’s a race to keep their audience from guessing the truth of the matter. A fast-paced and very funny all girl comedy.

THE DALESMANSINGERSAND THE WHITE ROSE SINGERS

Supporting The Farm Crisis NetworkThis Male Voice Choir has made music for over 40 years from their base at Danby Methodist Chapel. They give 1 5-20 local concerts each year as well as performances in Europe and America. This musical activity raises about £5,000 annually for a range of charities. They will be joined by the ladies choir, White Rose Singers. Both choirs sing a wide range of music and will combine for part of the programme.
