SPRING 2018

Dear Friends,In a world where we are overcome with concerns about the safety and wellbeing of our children, we at Florence Crittenton believe that path to change starts by ensuring our most vulnerable citizens – our children – have the best possible start. We believe this requires compassion, hard work and change.

Over the past year we have worked to revamp our services to meet the most critical needs of children and their families. We have implemented a higher level of treatment, including enhanced Substance Use Disorder treatment, better supports for children through our 0-5 initiative, started a high quality learning environment for 2 and 3-year-old children, and built new and expanded long-time partnerships to ensure the most vulnerable families receive services. In the following pages you will learn all about the programs and services Florence Crittenton offers and how your support is impacting your community. But rest assured, we are still Florence Crittenton. Our mission has not changed and we are still committed to supporting young families just as we have always done. We are Florence Crittenton – only better. A Florence Crittenton where Compassion Meets Action!

This is only possible because YOU, and others like you are also committed to the work of Florence Crittenton. We thank you for believing that every family deserves a chance to thrive!

Warmly,

MISSIONSTATEMENT

Florence Crittenton is proud to have the support and partnership of First Interstate Bank and the First Interstate BancSystem Foundation. Working with our local First Interstate branch has offered incredible opportunities for partnership and support through monetary and in-kind avenues. We are proud to partner with David Peretto, Vice President of the Helena Branch, who facilitates a monthly finance class for our residential clients. According to David, the class “began as a very basic ‘finance’ class. In order to adapt to the wishes of the participants, it has morphed into a life skills class and often the girls dictate the next month’s curriculum. This helps their engagement and attentiveness.” Topics have included: wants verus needs when it comes to making financial decisions, budget construction, job applications, W-4 forms, assisting clients with identification cards and setting up bank accounts, and mock job interviews. We asked David about his involvement with FCHS:

Why do you believe in FCHS? “FloCrit” as the girls like to call it, has been a piece of Helena for 100+ years. It’s easy to trust people and institutions with that type of history and longevity, especially those gracious enough to successfully provide a critical service to young people. Young people who most often are very limited in their resources and outlets for assistance.

What would you tell people about Florence Crittenton? I would tell people that Florence Crittenton is an easy organization to admire. Many of the clients often come from challenging home environments, with little family or financial support. Most of the clients exhibit high levels of fear, anger, resentment, confusion and a lack of trust. When you accompany that with being a first-time teen mother, these ladies are challenged emotionally unlike most of us ever have been. They haven’t experienced a loving family and friends, something many of us too often take for granted. Florence Crittenton does not take it for granted. They accept the challenge to nurture these ladies and to provide a foundation of life skills. The environment in turn gives the young ladies a chance at living and parenting acceptably.

How has the support of your workplace contributed to your work with Florence Crittenton? First Interstate Bank gives in dollars and volunteer time, both at high levels. They also encourage and support their employees’ willingness to help in the community and to do so within those organizations the employees cherish. It’s a culture that originated with the bank’s founding and a culture that continues to permeate today. We’re thankful to be part of a Helena community where Florence Crittenton and other wonderful organizations contribute so immensely in making a difference.

THANK YOU DAVID AND FIRST INTERSTATE BANK!

YOUR SUPPORTYour support over the last 6 months has allowed Florence Crittenton to revamp our programs, giving us the opportunity to serve more families and with better tools and resources. Now more than ever we can help families in crisis seek the treatment they need, as well as aid those families seeking exceptional care and early learning opportunities for their children...all with the goal of helping young families and our communities build bright futures.

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMSFlorence Crittenton’s residential programs have been updated to best meet the needs of our state’s most vulnerable populations, pregnant and parenting youth and their children. Residential programs serve young women, ages 12-24, and their children in two different programs.

Our Transitional Living program serves mothers ages 12-21 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, are working towards reunification with their child, or are in need of additional parenting and education support in a stable and loving environment. This 24/7-staffed program focuses on healthy pregnancies, parenting skills and support, education support, and transitioning to suitable permanent housing.

The Recovery Home is a Level 3.3 treatment program for mothers ages 18-24 that allows a mom to focus on her recovery and rehabilitation from a substance use disorder while keeping her child in her care. Currently 64% of cases with Child Protective Services in Montana involve substance abuse. This program will allow parents to address their substance use challenges while preventing removal of that child from their mother’s care, a scenario that can significantly affect that child’s life trajectory. This 24/7 program aims to assist in a mother’s recovery journey by addressing the underlying causes of the substance abuse, such as past trauma and mental or behavioral health challenges.

EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY PRESCHOOL In our endeavors to create opportunities for success for children in our state, Florence Crittenton recently launched our community-based Preschool Program. This program is open to 2 and 3 year olds at every ability and developmental level. The program has been funded in part by the Sample and Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundations as a pilot project that can be replicated throughout the state.

The progam is based on the idea that we must start with pre-academic and social skills early in order to provide our children with a strong foundation when they transition to the next educational step. This saves our state money by reducing the number of children who need additional supports down the road. The model focuses on quality intervention and prevention services, introduction to academic concepts, social-emotional health and the overall wellbeing of the child. A large component of our preschool is the skills and support of our educators, as well as low child to teacher ratios.

As with all programs at Florence Crittenton, our preschool will ensure healthy child-adult attachments and positive brain development through the use of evidence based practices, provide family access to supplementary support and services, and help children build the necessary resiliency to thrive emotionally, socially, cognitively, and physically in today’s demanding and complex world.

AT WORK

OUTPATIENT & COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES

EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY CHILDCARE

In an ongoing effort to serve more families on a continuum of care, Florence Crittenton has continued to expand it’s community-based services. All programs serve the mission of the organization to help families reach their goals and thrive in a loving and relationship-based setting.

Florence Crittenton is currently launching it’s Outpatient Substance Use Disorder and Behavioral Health Services for parents up to age 30 who are struggling with substance abuse, or the combination of substance use and behavioral health (i.e. depression, PTSD, etc.). Services are offered in a family-based setting where not only are the parents’ treatment needs met, but they are able to gain valuable parenting skills and their children’s wellbeing is also addressed. Services include individual, group, and family therapy, as well as parenting classes and access to home visiting services.

Florence Crittenton is part of the Partnership for Home Visiting as well as the First Years Initiative with the Child Protective Services Division of the Department of Public Health & Human Services of Montana, which offer free family support through Home Visiting programs. The mission is to provide information, support, skills and encouragement to strengthen families during the crucial early years of life. We provide in-home services through two evidence-based home visiting models, Parents As Teachers® and SafeCare. Home visits can serve families with children ages prenatal to age 5.

Florence Crittenton provides evidence based Parenting Classes to Riverside Women’s Correctional Facility. We also provide both prenatal and parenting education to our residential clients as well as young parents using our outpatient services. Our curricula are specifically designed for young parents and are delivered in a trauma-responsive, nurturing environment.

Florence Crittenton has long boasted excellent infant childcare as part of its array of services catering to young families, and today is no different. Our Child Enrichment Center is a licensed childcare center that provides services to both families residing in Florence Crittenton’s residential programs and the Helena community. Our center offers the highest level of nurturing care for infants and

toddlers ages 0-2. Our team of early childhood experts provide a developmentally appropriate and rich environment to stimulate and nurture growth and development across all areas. The Child Enrichment Center is a part of the STARS to Quality program- a continuous quality improvement program for early childhood education in Montana and was recently voted Helena’s Best Daycare.

Be sure to visit our newly updated website for more information on our approach to services, clinical model, history of the organization and relevant research on our work.

SPRING 2018

THE GIFT OF MOTHERHOODWe were honored to have former FCHS residential client, Clarissa Koop, speak at PINK 2018. Clarissa came to Florence Crittenton when she was 15 and pregnant. She stayed in the program for a year and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Clarissa says Florence Crittenton helped her and her baby succeed and today she wants to help other mothers have access to programs like this. Below is an excerpt of her moving speech.

“…My life before Florence Crittenton wasn’t an ideal life. At 15 years old I was a ward of the state, living on my own with my then boyfriend of 3 years. I thought I could never be tamed - that was until I found out I was going to become a mother.

I knew things were about to change drastically and I wasn’t ready. I was embarrassed and didn’t want to become another statistic. Since I was on juvenile probation, my probation officer decided it was best for me to be sent to Florence Crittenton. At the time I thought it was the worst thing that could have happened to me. I was scared to leave my family and friends and wasn’t ready to go to some strange place and live by someone else’s rules.

Being independent for so long, first at Florence Crittenton I was angry and resentful. My attitude changed when I allowed myself to open up. While at FCHS, I was given opportunities to become not only a better mother, but a more knowledgeable young woman. They taught us things that I still use in my everyday life like learning bonding and attachment, baby nutrition, how to balance a check book and bank account, even how to do our own taxes.

As a new mother I was nervous but the staff and women at Florence Crittenton gave me the confidence to be able to return home feeling fully capable to take care of my baby and myself. I often wonder how things would have played out had I not been given this opportunity. I believe I would be in the same situation as a lot of the girls I grew up with that also became teenage mothers. More than half of them are no longer in their children’s lives.

Florence Crittenton was my saving grace. I made life-long friends in the staff and women that I lived with. They have stayed with me throughout, still making sure I am on the right path and being there whenever I need their guidance or support. They truly became my second family. They changed my life for the better in more ways than one.

Today my daughter is 11 years old. She is doing awesome in school, she plays basketball, likes to dance and sing, and enjoys being a big sister. I am a mother, a wife, and work hard running my own business as an in-home housekeeper while I work on finishing up my last requirements to become a CNA. I can’t say thank you enough times to express my gratitude for all that Florence Crittenton has done for me and continues to do for me and my family.”

Without your donations, Florence Crittenton would not be able to go above and beyond for the young women that have and will continue to call Florence Crittenton home. Your donations are changing lives.
