OPEL VAUXHALL

VKBA 3653Issue 1 · 2008

As well as carrying out its required function for the wheel hub, this part also has an integrated system that generates speed signals for the ABS system. This sensor, developed using the latest technology, is ac-tive. If one of the components malfunctions, the ABS warning light will come on and the system will shut itself down. Suitable scan-tools are fundamental in order to identify the fault when carrying out up-to-date maintenance.

Appropriate tests need to be carried out using multi meter and oscilloscope instruments. The objec-tive of this newsletter is to explain clearly what type of signal the integrated sensor in this wheel hub unit emits.

Connect the electric connector to the sensor and both probe points on the multimeter to the sensor as indicated. Turn the panel on, slowly rotate the hub, if the sensor is working there will be a variation in tension of about 200 mV. This process allows you to check the signal emission for the sensor un-der examination.

2.1 Signal emission check (multimeter)

1. Power supply check

This process allows you to verify the power supply and the quality of the wiring from the ABS central electronic unit to the connector under examination. If the result of the test is positive, proceed with the testing of the signal emission.

Reference vehicle: Opel Zafira

Before proceeding with a diagnosis of the signal it is important to check the power supply. This can be done by using a multi meter. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor, set the multimeter to Volt, and connect the probe points on the multi meter to the two pins on the central electronic unit connector.

NOTE : The voltage values could be influenced by the vehicle battery tension but the tension variation remains the same (200mV)

2.2 Signal emission check (oscilloscope)

In this document described procedures can only be applied for the vehicle applications mentioned on the first page and only for the recommended wheel bearing kit VKBA 3653. Always follow the manufacturers fitting instructions.

In order to view the graphics of the signal emitted by the sensor you need to use an oscilloscope. Connect both probe points on the oscillo-scope to the sensor, turn the ignition key, engage the gear (+15 ON) and rotate the hub slowly to generate the signal.

This process allows you to view the signal with a wider amplitude, the oscilloscope negative is connected to the battery positive and the full-scale value is exchanged.

NOTE: In order to connect to the sensor, use the appropriate adaptors; don’t pierce or flay the electrical wires.

In the worst case, worn or damaged wheel bearings or hubs present a safety hazard to your customers. In the very least, they present the risk of untimely and costly failure on the road.

The best course of action, then, is to replace wheel bearings or hubs before they fail. But how can you know when that will be? Data collected in millions of replacement applications show that the mileage of vehicles most likely to need wheel bearing replace-

ment is between 130 000 and 190 000 kilometers (80 000 miles and 120 000 miles).

Even so, for maximum safety and reliability, SKF recommends that you inspect the wheel bearings during any brake replacement work regardless of the age of the vehicle. And always be alert for the early warning signs of worn bearings – including any friction noise on wheel rotation or unusual slowness in the turning action of the suspended wheel assembly.
