This autumn promises an array of superb entertainment to look forward to at the Corn Exchange. Major names on the bill over the coming months include Robert Plant, Gregory Porter, Johnny Marr and Bellowhead through to Imelda May, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Passenger.

Other key highlights include: a seasonal show with a difference, Not Until We Are Lost. . . an enthralling theatrical experience created by physical theatre company Ockham’s Razor; INALA, a Zulu Ballet featuring Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and a first for the city when iconic music maker Philip Glass performs with the ensemble he first brought together in 1968.

Always a sell-out, the eccentric and much-loved Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain returns with its unique musical take on the likes of Lady Gaga and Wagner. Manchester legends James make their first appearance in years and fresh from sell-out Wembley Arena and O2 gigs, Frank Turner brings his Sleeping Souls Tour to the city.

John Bishop leads the way with top comedy laughs this season, along with Fascinating Aida, Tangentleman Ross Noble, king of PowerPoint presentation Dave Gorman, kooky Noel Fielding, suit wearing Frank Skinner and of course Jimmy Carr!

Other shows include: Monty Python legend Michael Palin; songs and stories from Aled Jones; two days of the fabulous Sing-a-Long-a Frozen; blues from the godfather of British blues, John Mayall and Dawn French’s much anticipated show 30 Million Minutes based on her life and career.

In October, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra opens its second season as the Corn Exchange Orchestra in Residence with the first of seven concerts. International pianist, Freddy Kempf, newly appointed Artist in Residence for the acclaimed concert series, will be sharing his knowledge and experience with young musicians in an exciting educational project, as well as performing in a special recital featuring his favourite sonatas.

After a unique online talent search The Queen Extravaganza band includes musicians personally selected by Taylor. Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls

Singer-songwriter Frank Turner has gone from strength to strength since he released his first solo album back in 2005. Poetic and haunting at times his sounds veers from folk to rock.

His rise to meteoric success has been established by playing the UK and USA festival scene whilst also supporting the likes of Green Day. Having recently played sold out gigs at Wembley Arena and The O2, he now returns for a full UK tour.

For his first appearance as Corn Exchange Artist in Residence, award-winning pianist Freddy Kempf performs some of his favourite sonatas. By turns dramatic, tempestuous and emotionally complex these sonatas are the perfect showcase for his virtuosic skills.

The evening begins with the extraordinary spectacle of nine pianos on stage when Freddy performs a newly commissioned work by composer Nicholas Paul Simpson alongside eight local music students, the culmination of a music education project between the Corn Exchange, Cambridgeshire Music and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Pink Martini

Somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band and Japanese film noir is the 12-piece Pink Martini. Part language lesson, part Hollywood musical, the Portland, Oregon-based ‘little orchestra’ was created in 1994 by Harvard graduate and classically trained pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale.

Equally at home performing its romantic, multi-lingual repertoire on concert stages and in smokey bars, Pink Martini draws a wildly diverse crowd. The show also features original Pink Martini vocalist China Forbes.

At the start of 2010 the buzz about Los Angeles-born and now Brooklyn-based jazz/soul vocalist Gregory Porter was a strong, steady murmur.

Now the buzz has built to a roar – with a Grammy nomination and critics world over hailing him as the ‘leader of the pack’ with an extraordinary presence. Porter’s magnificent voice, utterly brilliant use of poetry and unguarded depth of emotional delivery has fuelled his rapid rise to fame.

Critics the world over, from the Wall Street Journal to Jazz Times are hailing Porter as a new king of jazz, a performer of extraordinary presence who has been compared with the greatest of the greats such as Joe Williams, Nat Cole, Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye.
