With thousands of brokers in the New York City, Long Islandand Hamptons’ markets, Prudential Douglas Elliman neededa solution for variable data print, direct mail and multi-touch campaigns. A repository for headshots and propertyspecific images for every broker was also required. Sincemany agents are part of teams and frequently collaborate,a sharing tool needed to be developed. Combining this witha credit card interface, budget approvals, uploading of listsfor mailings and multi-level approvals was essential.Prudential Douglas Elliman turned to Print by Premier.

Prudential Douglas Elliman needed to provide flexibility andallow the agents to have an easy-to-use, robust platform, whilemaintaining their strict brand standards. The system needed toprovide a portal for all postcards, brochures, market overviewsand property specific marketing. A single login through theintranet system was essential. Once logged in, the broker/agentneeded to be automatically recognized and all their informationpulled-in, pre-populating the templates. Basic Web

Basic Web is a cross-media solution that enables users tocombine the reach of VDP with the precision of web andemail communication to create powerful marketingcampaigns. Among the marketing activities that Basic WEBenables is campaigns utilizing variable data print,personalized URL's, or PURLS and targeted emails. Theworkflow begins with the user selecting a print or webartwork template (or creating one from scratch using BasicCanvas). After specifying the areas that are variable, the useruploads the data file. Basic Web then maps the fields on theartwork to the fields in the file. Through the rules engine,different images or text can be inserted automatically,depending upon criteria such as gender, location orpurchasing history. The user is then presented with the finalprint or HTML page for proofing. Printed files can be outputin industry standard PPML, optimized PDF and otherformats.

Smart Campaigns

The typical process for cross media campaigns involvesartwork creation, adding data, specifying data/content/layout rules, launching the campaign, learning what workedand what didn't and finally launching a new campaignbased upon what we have learned. The problem with thisapproach is that we only find out what did and didn't workafter the campaign is complete, thereby missing opportunities.We thought to ourselves there had to be a better way. Thisis why we developed Basic’s Smart Campaigns.

Basic’s Smart Campaigns enables you to create a variety ofartwork/content/ images/promotions and serve them all upto a pre-set sample group. Basic’s will then monitor, in real-time,which of these variations is having the most success andsupply the most successful variation to the remaining bulkof the recipients. The process is called multi-variant but theresults have never been able to be applied in real-time until now.Basic’s Smart Campaigns applies the knowledge that mayhave taken 5 or 6 campaigns to build up in to one singlecampaign effort. Print by Premier offers extensive warehousing, fulfillmentand distribution services, including global shipments andcustomized pick and pack solutions, in a climate-controlledand secure environment. We are able to respond quickly andefficiently to tight turnaround times based on the nature ofthe product, the location of the recipient, the business rulesregarding shipping methods and costs, or specialrequirements such as trade shows and training sessions.

The warehouse is driven by an electronic radio frequencysystem linked to our web-based warehouse managementsystem. It combines radio waves and barcode technology in arobust, internet-based architecture, providing scaleable andflexible warehouse management with real-time inventorytracking and reporting. All components in the warehouse arebar-coded and catalogued, and inventories are trackedthrough hand-held devices as orders are filled. Re-order pointsare programmed into the system, triggering replenishment ofraw materials or finished printed goods as required.

Fulfillment, Kitting and Assembly

Print by Premier has the ability to receive fulfillmentrequests through a variety of channels including the web,fax, phone, letter, e-mail, business reply cards and tradeshow files (hard or soft copy), and perform massdistributions for product launches and revision updatesranging from one to tens of thousands of pieces. We alsoperform kitting and assembly services of virtually anyprinted product, from one-page letters to complex kits withcustom boxes inserted with items such as CDs, manuals,user guides, labels, reply cards, registration cards, finishedgoods components and posters.

10-Micron Stochastic Screening

Tiny dots placed at random intervals: this is the magicbehind 10-micron stochastic screening. This leading-edgeprint technology breathes life into images by creating richer,more vivid colors and a level of definition that can’t bematched. For print projects that require impeccableaccuracy, 10-micron stochastic screening produces imagesover three times more detailed than conventional printtechniques.

How does it work?In traditional offset printing, dot patterns are equally spacedin a rigid pattern. A variety of dot sizes are used to achievetonality, density and shading. Under magnifi cation, you caneasily identify the dot pattern used to create the image. Inthe stochastic process, all dots used to create an image areequally sized and are much smaller than those used intraditional offset printing. The dot pattern is randomized toallow a wider range of definition and dimensional effects, aswell as a broader spectrum of colors. Light and dark areasare definitioned by using less or more dots to achieve thevariations. The size of the dots used in the stochastic processis measured in terms of microns.

For those suppliers currently utilizing stochastic screening,only a few have made the significant leap to 10-micron. Themajority use 25 or 20-micron dots in their process. Thismeans that the equivalent line screen is 380 to 400,respectively. The traditional offset print process typicallyoffers 150 to 200-line screen with the most prestigiousquality requirements using 300-line screen. Print by Premieruses a 10-micron process, the equivalent of 650-line screen.

What does this mean?Projects printed using 10-micron stochastic screening havegreater detail, increased clarity and greater dimensionaleffects, as well as better flesh tones for a more realisticresult. Color is also controlled more effectively, allowing fora broader color spectrum with smoother gradations. With10-micron stochastic screening, the possibilities are as largeas the dots are small.

Hexachrome

Hexachrome is a six-color printing process that uses anenhanced CMYK color gamut plus two additional vividcolors – orange and green. This process offers a broaderspectrum of both vibrant and subtle color, which, in turn,more accurately depicts the RGB gamut in continuous-toneimages. Using hexachrome, we can closely match over 90%of the spot colors in the Pantone Matching System® (PMS)library – almost twice the number of colors that can beachieved using traditional four-color process printing. Thismeans that a job produced with hexachrome can containan unlimited number of matched spot colors and stillremain within the budget of a six-color print job.

When should you use hexachrome?• For printed products that require more than

CMYK plus two spot colors• When the designer requires more intense

color in separations• To match pastel colors and subtle color variations• For product packaging, point-of-purchase displays,

catalogues, posters, annual reports and publications

Great Green Paper QuestionsAre we running out of trees in the U.S.?No; in fact, there are more trees in the U.S. today than therewere 70 years ago. Every day the paper and forest productsindustry plants more than three times the number of treesthan are harvested

How many trees are planted each year in the U.S.?Over 2.5 billion trees are planted in the U.S. each year. Theforest community plants over 1.5 billion of these trees;that's an average of 4 million new trees planted every dayby the forest community.

Are we cutting down more trees in the U.S. than we'replanting?

No. In fact, forest growth has exceeded harvests since the1940s.

What percentage of the world's wood is used each yearto make paper?Only about 17% of the 3.3 billion cubic meters of woodconsumed worldwide each year is for papermaking, andmuch of this wood is in the form of wood chips and otherresidue left behind from sawmill operations. Over half ofthe wood harvested in the world is used for fuel, mostly forcooking and domestic heating.

Will recycling paper help save the tropical rain forests?The trees that grow in the tropical rain forests are rarelyharvested to make paper. The deforestation occurring in thetropical rain forests is mainly due to population pressure.In the world's under-developed nations, more than 90percent of the deforestation occurs because of the demandfor increased agricultural land and/or firewood.

Does cutting down trees for papermaking lead todeforestation?No. Deforestation is the permanent clearing of trees forpurposes such as creating farmland and pasture land, forcommercial and residential development, or for any otheruse for which trees are cut and not allowed to grow back.Paper companies and others in the forest products industryare actively reforesting. They not only allow trees to growback, they actually encourage new growth by replanting andcaring for new trees, and by creating forest land in areaswhere it previously did not exist. Unfortunately,deforestation is occurring in many parts of the world,especially in the tropics. This deforestation is mainly due topopulation pressure. In most of these cases, forests are cutdown and burned for domestic fuel (heating homes andcooking) or to clear land for farming.

How much of a harvested tree is actually used?Is any part wasted?The forest products industry has found uses for almostevery part of a tree, so virtually the entire tree is used. Forinstance, lumber and building products can be made fromthe trunk, primarily from large trees whose diameters aregreater than 8". The remaining wood is recovered in theform of trimmings and wood chips, and is used to makepaper. The natural chemicals within the wood chips arerecovered and made into useful products such asturpentine, plastics, food flavorings, and photographic film.The bark of the tree is ground or chipped to make gardenmulch, or it can be burned in a furnace to generate energyto run a paper mill. Leaves, needles, and small branches aregenerally left in the forest to replenish the soil by addingvaluable organic matter. This also helps to hold water andprevent excessive run-off on the forest floor.

Paper vs. E-Waste Computers and Electronics• The amount of electricity to run a computer for only

five months could produce enough paper for theaverage person to use for an entire year.

• Paper is biodegradable and nearly 60 percent of allpaper in the U.S. is recycled.

•Only 18 percent of all electronic devices are currentlyrecycled and e-waste constitutes the single largestwaste export in the U.S.

Is "e-waste" considered hazardous?Certain components of some electronic products containmaterials that render them hazardous, depending on theircondition and density. For instance, California law currentlyviews nonfunctioning CRTs (cathode ray tubes) fromtelevisions and monitor as hazardous.

What should I do with my electronic discards?The mantra of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” applies here.

• Reduce your generation of e-waste through smartprocurement and good maintenance.

• Reuse still functioning electronic equipment bydonating or selling it to someone who can still use it.

• Recycle those components that cannot be repaired.
