Protect Your Pet- against ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas

What can you do? Make sure your dog or cat is on a monthly heartworm prevention all year long. This deadly disease, carried by mosquitoes, can be prevented. Most heartworm prevention products also help control common intestinal parasites that are debilitating to pets and harmful to people. Most people know about the dangers of diseases carried by ticks, especially Lyme disease. Lyme disease is carried by the Blacklegged deer tick. This tick is present in over 52 Ohio counties including Franklin, Fairfield, Delaware, and Licking County. Lyme disease has severe health effects on humans and dogs. We also diagnose dogs with two other tick borne diseases, Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis. Fleas, of course, never seem to go away. 2013 was the worst summer and fall for flea infestation in years. Warm weather starts the whole cycle over again, as fleas become a problem for pets and the households they live in. Thankfully, there are many safe and effective products to protect dogs and cats when used correctly. When you fill out the risk factor questionnaire during your pets’ visit, we can help recommend the products that are best for your pet.

If you have concerns about tick exposure to your dog (woods, parks, ponds, grassy areas, or anywhere deer may pass through), please consider vaccinating against Lyme disease. This vaccine can be started in a series of 2, 3-4 weeks apart, and then boostered yearly

for the best protection.

Feline Chronic Kidney Disease

Kidney disease is most common in older cats, but often begins in middle age. We can frequently diagnose kidney disease with blood and urine tests before any signs occur and make treatment recommendations based on those reports. Signs may include mild changes in behavior, excessive thirst and more clumps of urine in the litter box, decreased appetite, weight loss, decreased muscle mass, and nausea. Twice yearly examinations of cats over 7 years of age and periodic laboratory testing will help to ensure early detection and timely treatment of feline kidney disease. Prescription Diets (Hill’s k/d), medications and fluid therapy can help slow the progression of this disease and provide a good quality of life for your feline friend.
