What is WED – World Environment Day?Green Economy: does it include me?

Well… yes –the time has come to come together as humans to appreciate our environment and consider how we can help to protect it for the benefit of all humanity.

The main aim of the International Environmental Day is to remind us of our “Existence”. It means the dependency of our planet Earth and our relationships and responsibilities towards protecting, saving our oxygen, without which we can’t live. We may have different opinions on various issues but on our Planet, the Environment we shouldn’t. If we imagine that there is no Planet, no Environment, then there is no need for discussions about fighting for comfortable living. We are just a single drop of this entire ocean called the universe. All our actions are directly affect this World and the Universe. We have almost irreversibly damaged our environment for our selfish needs by thinking that we are the owners of this Planet. But we are just Guests on this planet and we have so many responsibilities to save and protect the place where we are being given only an opportunity to live in. If we are forgetting to be good Guests and start doing damage as the owners, then this Planet will throw us out by its disastrous effects caused by us which are beyond our control.

The World Environmental Day should serve as a reminder at least once a year not only to raise awareness but also to compel us directly to ACT TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT and the PLANET.

Did we answer to your question?

YES PARTTIALLY NO

This month we are dedicating ПИГЕОН to promote a lifestyle of not throwing garbage on the roads. ПИГЕОН team wants to share ideas and activities to make the world a cleaner place! Check it out now!

What first comes to your mind when the word ‘environment’ pops up? In the manner of a popular demotivational poster, the answers would probably go as follows:

Children: ‘It’s something our mum and dad tell us we should preserve.’

General Public: ‘Important for the community! Immeasurably! Something should be done! Crap if it turns out I would be the one to have to deal with it.’

People in Power: ‘Whatever the public wants to be done, we’d definitely try to appear as if we give a damn.’

Although we all agree, in theory, that the matter of preserving nature’s assets in their existing form for otherwise we’re in for it, the truth is that in practice we barely bother to look around the neighborhood for recycling containers, let alone actually do any recycling. Some would even assert that there are people about town who wouldn’t give a second thought about brazenly littering. A certain award-winning documentary can testify on that*. But before we jump to conclusion that only people around these parts of the world are oblivious of the waste basket, the problems of the melting ice caps, nuclear waste, the greenhouse gases, extinction of species and dramatic climate shifts, I would better stop here; constitute the problems of the entire world. Problems so grave that some predict a world where our posterity would wonder what the world was like before the WFW (Wars For Water).

So in the year of 1997, the member countries of the United Nations held a meeting in Kyoto to deal with the reduction of the pollution issue, particularly the greenhouse gases (GHG), where the

amount of the pollution was established for each of the countries and the percentages of the decrease of the GHG emission in the future for the sake of sustainability, so that we could enjoy our beautiful blue planet by 2050, before things change irretrievably. 191 states have signed and ratified the document what became to be known as the Kyoto Protocol**.

What was one of the most significant steps so far for the preservation of the environment worldwide, it soon became jeopardized. One of the greatest polluters, the USA, refused to ratify the Protocol, and just months after ratifying it, Canada walked out of it as well. According to the scientific research stated in the Protocol, the amount of the GHG emission of the USA constitutes 16% of all GHG emission of the world, or 24.1 tons a year by capita. The similar goes for Canada, 23.2 tons per capita. (EU countries, e.g., 11%, that is 10.6 t per capita. China’s input is about 5%). The countries complained of the predicted reduction of the growth of the economy and that has been stated as the major reason for their unwillingness to participate. Thus the entire project has practically been rendered inefficient, since it already was thought to impose modest and insufficient measures for the sake of the environment.

Looks like one of those noble altruistic ideas destined to await better days for a clearer conception and realization to be distilled in our minds, like the Occupy movement, if I dare say. The black octopus of greed spreads its ugly tentacles over the skies too, only in the form of gas.

Where does our country stand in this equation? What is the X of our carbon blueprint? No one can tell for sure; the

researches are scarce and not systematically conducted, like in any other developing country. There are great initiatives such as Očistimo Srbiju, which included people throughout the country. There are also cases such as this spring’s flooding in Eastern and Southern Serbia, where not a small number of people lose homes and properties due to the lack of proper irrigation system maintenance, which plague us year after year.

Perhaps the conclusion might be to clean our own back yards before we set out to change the world. Environmental consciousness is basically good upbringing and that means it stems from domestic upbringing. Smaller chances are that a guy who’s used to spitting out a chewing gum on the pavement would find himself involved in Očistimo Srbiju. It is to this guy that I dedicate my photo of the gumwrapping paper printed and distributed in the Očistimo Srbiju initiative, a symbol of the deep polarization in the manic depression of Serbia that is called the preservation of the environment.

Vintage, second hand and recycled clothing

vintidž – bajkoviti old fešn

Dok kupujemo, veliku pažnju posvećujemo kroju i dezenu odeće, a o samom materijalu odeće retko razmišljamo.

On ne iritira kožu i dokazano povećava imunitet. Nošenje lanenog veša ubrzava zarastanje dekubitisnih rana i otklanja mnoge oblike kožnog ekcema. Gusta lanena odeća odbija skoro ceo spektar UV zračenja, a lanene zavese smanjuju nivo statičkog elektriciteta u prostoriji.

Nastaju u procesima topljenja i uvrtanja.

IT-SCI 6.7: Collemaggio - L’Aquila

ItalyJuly 7th until July 21st Topic: Environment

The project will take place in Collemaggio, a park adjacent to the city center, where was the former psychiatric hospital. After it closed down the area became the property of ASL, now there remain only few facilities and buildings in a dilapidated state. After the earthquake, two associations have worked on the recovery and enhancement of the area: one is a day center with activities carried out by the association “180 Amici”. The other one is Casematte, with the Committee 3e32, which deals with dozens of social activities. Together they have created a path of discovery and exploitation of the park.Volunteers, together with the activists of 180amici and 3e32, will clean the park, monitor the tree species, put signs etc. in order to recover the historical memory of the place. They will also organize cultural events to enhance the social function of Collemaggio, which is now even more vital in the face of great need for gathering places and social spaces, due to the closure of the center.

Study Theme: The history of L’Aquila is marked by a series of devastating earthquakes and subsequent re-foundation: in the fourteenth century, in the eighteenth century, and finally 6 April 2009, when a shock, at 3:32, 6 on the Richter scale destroyed the city and most of the villages and surrounding municipalities. After almost three years, the reconstruction process is hard: the historical center and the buildings are still red zones and the region’s economy is in deep crisis. Volunteers will visit the area to become aware of the real situation of post-earthquake

WORKCAMP

2012 June 13

Legambiente is the biggest environmental organization in Italy. It is a network of many local groups and people which share common values and interests in protecting the environment, and even more for solidarity and equality in society, for protecting cultural heritage, voluntary work, for a better understanding between different generations and many other things.

My EVS for Legambiente Padova started on March 1st and I stayed there until the end of January. In the past, Legambiente Padova was working a lot on agricultural issues, but in the last five or six years the priorities became renewable energy, mobility, urbanism and conservation and promotion of the monuments in the city. In the last couple of years, the organization had very good results in increasing usage of renewable energy in the Veneto region (North-Eastern Italy), specifically photovoltaic energy.

My main activity as an EVS volunteer is scientific research work on different environmental topics. Legambiente has applied the well-known proverb “think globally act locally” very well, so we always look for what we can improve on the local

level, what we can improve in order to have a good environment, less pollution and, generally, a more pleasant place of living. My usual task is to look for good practices in an environmental field in Europe which can be applied here in Padova. So far I have finished one research on the benefits of using hybrid buses in public transport in cities, one research about possibilities of investments in renewable energy in the countries of former Yugoslavia and one research about good mobility practices in Europe is in progress. There are also many street actions and events which we organize in order to promote usage of renewable energy, cycling and more sustainable lifestyle. Also from time to time we participate in regional and international campaigns on environmental topics.

This EVS project is also regional, with six more volunteers in Legambiente’s environmental centres in the Veneto region, so it is also nice to meet them and work with them from time to time. During this summer, I will be a leader on Legambiente international voluntary camps, which were one of my favorite activities in VCV for the past couple of years, so I’m really looking forward to this. And it will be nice to go out of the office and replace the busy city life

with fine weather in nature.

Padova is a great place to be, it is a university city with a lot of Erasmus students and other volunteers from different o r g a n i z a t i o n s . There are a lot of cultural events in the city, music festivals, many different o r g a n i z a t i o n s with interesting programs, so it

Volunteering for Legambiente

offers great social life. The city has got really beautiful architecture; the nice market squares in the center are especially nice, which during the evenings become meeting places for young people and concert venues very often. Padova is also a home of one of the most beautiful public squares in Europe, Prato della Valle, and the oldest botanical garden in the world. What is great is that bicycle is probably the best option for transport in the city, because everything is very easy reachable by bike.

It is well known that Italy is a country with amazing cultural heritage and nice natural spots. The cities have so much to offer, with so many beautiful buildings, museums; some have really nice green areas. But also if you go to some small village, especially in the Alps, it can be an amazing experience. Of course, food, coffee and wine are amazingly good here.In the end I would like to use this opportunity to encourage young people in Serbia to take part in the EVS program. Apart from being a great social and intercultural experience, if you manage to connect it with your education and previous experience, it can be a great educational program as well.

GAIAIn the last month’s edition of the ПИГЕОН we presented to you an international working group of Service Civil International – YUWG. This month we wish to show you the work of another working group – GAIA. This is our youngest working group. It is a platform for activists of SCI and partner organizations founded with the aim to express and to share their activities and best practices regarding environmental sustainability. Following this the activists focus on the topics of sustainable development and climate change. These topics link to central ideas of SCI by raising awareness of the relationship between sustainable living and peace and social justice within and outside of the organization. The main function of the group is to share information and facilitate cooperation within the SCI network in this particular field.

To manage these tasks the activists have started a blog and published a newsletter – http://createaclimate4peace.blogspot.com and http://issuu.com/sciint/docs/gaiazine_5?mode=window&backgroundColor=%23222222. In these two media forms it is easy to follow the activities of the group and also get updates on the international events and campaigns concerned with the topic of environment and sustainability. Both report about the groups’ activities, like the GaiaMicroGrant, and also about international events like the Rio +20 (you can find more details on the blog). Furthermore, the group promotes good practices, like that of a group of peasants in Latin America from different countries who synchronize their struggle against the multinational companies and corruption (viacampesina.org).

Parallel to this, GAIA created the category of “Green camps” as a way of linking the different workcamps concerned with sustainable development and climate change within the branches and partners of SCI. The activists also participate in climate campaigns and in the United Nations negotiations about climate change. It participated for example on an Eco Bike Tour in Bulgaria in 2005, as you can see in the picture below.

June 2012

One of the ways GAIA supports projects in SCI is the GaiaMicroFund, as mentioned above. The fund gives branches and partners the possibility of realization of the small projects within the thematical field of the working group. One of the examples that took place in 2011 was a weekend workcamp on Sri Lanka, which connected environmental protection and intercultural understanding. Local volunteers from different backgrounds – Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala – and volunteers from abroad – Finland and Sweden – together cleaned a part of the beach, in which turtles lay their eggs.

You may know Crna Kuća as the place of numerous music concerts where you can buy cheap drinks and hang out with friends. Apart from that, what else CK can offer to you is going to be explored in this article. The talk is about events on eco-friendly subject matter.

Overall, I would like to introduce eight workshops, which take place in eight consecutive days in June and are realized with the intent to support and build Women’s creative space (Zenski kreativni prostor). The participation fee for each workshop is 500 RSD, and all incomes are used for the purposes of the workshops.

The topic on 3rd June will be for all the participants in the spirit of jewellery which is going to be be made of beads and metal. Soon after, on 4th June, participants will learn how to make dolls of textile. 5th of June is also dedicated to toys – this time to crochet ’’amigurumi“, especially to those who do not know how to crochet. For the following day, you need to bring an old useless t-shirt or another piece of clothing which you would one like to recycle and redesign to wear it again. Another jewellery-creating afternoon is going to take place in CK on 7th June, however this time with polymer clay using transfer technique. On 8th of June, the participants can look forward to learning one traditional ethno craftsmanship of wool-press whose roots could be traced up to 13th century. A similar activity is held the day after – weaving is held on 9th June. On the last day of workshops, we finish with sewing of bags using old trousers and skirts.

For all of those interested not only in these various workshops but also in good-class concerts, it’s worth to keep checking the program on www.ck13.org/ so as not to miss any great opportunity to have a fun and to be creative!

The cover page symbolizes the relationship between human beeings and nature. This relationship has gone through a lot of forms and one of them is that people are destroying the nature. It is a part of a painting / collage where a girl is floating in the woods - unconsciously she shows her impact on the environment. The girl is in a path of regenerating her natural side and reunited with nature
