Search Engine Optimisation, SEO for short, is key to anybody who has a website and wants it
to be seen by public. There are over 300 million searches performed each and every day. If
you want your site to come top of the Google search Results Page and to reap the rewards
of being on page one then using SEO is going to help you achieve this. To shed some light
on the matter, I have summarised the process for you:
What is SEO? – SEO is the name given to the process of making your website appear higher
in the search engines ranking system. With nearly 70% of websites being found through
search engines, being top of the results page can provide huge benefits for your website and
your business.
What are Keywords? – In Search Engine Optimisation, these are the words or phrases used
in a searcher in a search engine. The right keywords are those that are frequently placed
into a search engine but are not being used by many websites. You will find another article
based solely on this subject on this site.
Where Do I Put Keywords? – The keywords you have found now need to be placed in the
right place in each web page for Search Engine Optimisation to work. Basically, the search
engine is checking the content of your site. The more confident it is of the content the
higher it will appear in the search results.
Certain words or phrases in a document are given preference by search engines. So you
need to make sure that you are putting these words in the right places. This needs to be in
the HTML code as well as through Meta tags and the content.
Where Do Search Engines Look For Keyword? – Some of the best places to place your
keywords for Search Engine Optimisation to work are:
• In your Page Title
• In your Headings
• As Links
• Inside Bold Text
• In the first 25 words on your page
• In the URL
• In your Meta tags
What Do Search Engines Not Like? – Pages need to be easy to read for the search engines
to pick them up. As well as putting in keywords they like you should also avoid the things
they do not like. Such as:
• Long pages
• Very short pages
• Dynamic URLs i.e. URLs that contain these characters - & $ + = ? % cgi
• Flash pages
• Links inside an image or a frame
You should avoid these as your page will not appear on top of the search engine results.
What Else Should I Do? – Links going into your site (Inbound) are a major contributor to
search engine success. It is not just the quantity that matters though. You need to get a
high click through rate to your site too. Please see the article on Link Building for a more in-
depth explanation of how to achieve this.
There you have it – A simple guide to Search Engine Optimisation. If you can begin to place
these simple steps in place when you are building your website then you will find that your
site slowly but surely climbs up the search engine results and you will get more traffic to
your site and leads to your business.
