JIRA Quick Guide

What is JIRA?

JIRA is used to report tasks, bugs at UT Dallas.

How to login

Logging in:

1. Go to an Internet browser (accepted browsers

include Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or

Chrome).

2. Type https://jira.utdallas.edu in address line.

3. Press Enter.

4. Type NetID and Password. Press Signin.

Note: You can use the main web address or the

project web address.

Issues in progress

In Progress gadget displays all issues that are currently in

progress and assigned to the current user viewing the

dashboard.

To open Issue: 2. Click any hyperlinked column shown.

Working with Dashboard

The JIRA Dashboards is the first screen you see when you log in to JIRA. Its designed to serve as a summary

page of Issues Assigned to you, listing of activity for the

projects you are assigned and information from the JIRA administrator.

Add Gadget:

1. Click Add Gadget icon in upper right corner.

2. The Gadget Directory appears. Select a gadget from list. Make any changes to the Gadget.

3. Click Add it Now. 4. Click Finished.

Edit Layout: 1. Click Edit Layout icon in upper right corner.

2. Select Layout.

Tools: 1. Click Tools icon in upper right corner.

2. Select action (Create Dashboard, Edit Dashboard, etc.).

3. Save changes.

Assigned to Me Gadget

Assigned to Me Gadget displays all open issues in all

projects assigned to the current user viewing the dashboard.

To open Issue:

1. Click any hyperlinked column shown.

Create Issue

1. Click Create Issue at the top of the screen. 2. Select Project.

3. Select Issue Type. (Use Task, Bug, etc.) 4. Click Create button.

Add Details to Issue

1. Type Summary. This is a brief explanation.

2. Select Priority. Note: Blocker requires Project Owner approval.

3. Select Requested Due Date. This is the date

issue is closed. 4. Select Component. Note: Must select for Financial

Management System, Campus Solution, Human Resources.

5. Type a Description. This field contains a complete explanation about the issue. Need to include as much

information as necessary for future readers.

6. Upload any supporting documentation using Attachment. (Acceptable formats: .doc., docx., xls,

pdf, jpg, png, rft, txt, etc.) 7. Type length of time in Original Estimate. Accepted

formed: w for weeks, m for minutes, d for days; h for

hours. 8. Click Create.

The Project Owner will assign the Issue to a team

member. Issue updates are maintained until the issue is Closed.

Editing an Issue

1. Click Edit button.

2. Make changes. 3. Click Update button to save your changes.

Add Details to Issue

1. Click Workflow. 2. Choose an option. The choices are: Resolve or

Closed.

3. Type an explanation. 4. Click Close.

Quick Search Project Search

1. Click a Project from the displayed list. Note: At

least one of the projects must be selected. 2. Click Search.

3. Select an issue from the search results list.

Use Quick Search

1. Type your search term(s) in Quick Search Text

Field.

2. Press Enter key. 3. Select an issue from the search results list

Query Search

1. Type your search term(s) in Query field

2. Click at least one of the query options (Summary, Description, Comments and Environment.

3. Press Search button. 4. Select an issue from the search results list

Getting Help

Click the Help Icon . To start JIRA Online User’s

Guide.

Click ? on any screen in JIRA.

Projects

A JIRA project is a collection of issues, and is defined according to our varying applications such as Budget

Finance, Human Resources, Enterprise Application Services.

Use the project browser screen to view a project or its

components. The project summaries are shown as well.

Project Elements

Summary — Shows recent activity in your project, plus a

list of issues that are due soon.

Issues — Shows a summary of all issues in a project

grouped by Status. Also shows summaries of all unresolved issues, grouped by Assignee, Priority,

Version and Component. Change Log — Shows resolved issues for previous

versions of a project.

Components — Shows a summary of all components

for a given project.

Popular Issues — Shows a project's unresolved issues,

ordered by popularity (votes). Versions — Shows a summary of recent versions for a

given project.

Click Projects to Browse All Projects or Specific Projects
