What is Digital Literacy?
To be digitally literate is to have the transferable knowledge and
applicable skills needed to operate ‘network devices’, such as
smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop PCs.
Why Teach Digital Literacy?
As a subject, Digital Literacy allows children to use digital technolo-
gies to enhance their learning across the curriculum. The teaching
of Digital Literacy encompasses the philosophy that creativity and
self-direction are needed to imagine and produce solutions to the
problems of ‘tomorrow’s world’. The sessions also nurture the de-
velopment of many of the ‘soft skills’ employers regard as crucial to
the future economy. We also use digital devices every day!
Learning Connectors
Each term, in Digital Literacy lessons, we focus upon a different
theme: iPads, Multimedia and Radio. The Learning Connectors
‘exploration’, ‘collaboration’ and ‘creativity’ connect our learning.
Digital Literacy lessons allow learners to access innovative and in-
teresting parts of the ‘new’ National Curriculum. Furthermore, the
sessions also allow learners to explore their Learning Challenge
questions in an imaginative way.
Explain Everything
Explain Everything is an app that allows learners to create videos ex-
plaining concepts in ‘real time’. It is widely accepted that explaining
concepts to others embeds one’s own learning; what better way is
there to get your head around tricky concepts?
iPads In Digital Literacy we use iPads to augment—or change— the way we learn. We con-
nect all our learning by using creativity to change the way we look at completing a task.
TouchApp Creator
One aim of Digital Literacy lessons is to facilitate learners’ acquisition of ‘digital device skills’
by simply presenting their learning in different ways. Years 5 and 6 have developed many new
skills whilst making ‘Webapps’ (their own internet site).

the fantastic work our children have
made.
Your Guide to the apps
& websites we use
A parent guide to some of the apps
you can download to your tablet or
website you can access on your com-
puter to support learning across the
curriculum: from maths to music!
Lego Movie Maker
We all learn in different ways. Some learners find that making visual notes and drawings aids their
learning. Years 3 and 4 learnt the basics of stop-motion animation by producing videos to
investigate parts of their Learning Challenges.
Y4: Do you solve problems with your mind or gut instinct?
Y6: Can you feel the force?
Y3: How is you dinner different from a Stone Age man’s?
Y5: Why should the rainforests be
important to us all?
Y2: How did
castles protect
people?
Y4: Where would
the White Witch
be most powerful?
Immersive Learning Suite
The Immersive Learning Suite gives Rudston learners the unique
experience of literally surrounding themselves with their learning.
In Digital Literacy lessons we use the Immersive Learning Suite to
explore fictional worlds — such as the ‘Place Between’ — and stim-
ulate rich discussion; for example, using clips from the ‘Inside
Out’ film to explore mixed emotions.
Robotics
Digital Literacy lessons have also given learners the opportunity to
access some elements of computer science, such as robotics. Using
robots allows the development of many mathematical concepts such
as: spatial / orientation awareness; the use of maps and coordinates;
writing algorithms to give specific instructions and correcting one’s
errors.
Multimedia Multimedia devices stimulate learning
in unique and different ways.
Leon and the Place Between Below are a few links to examples of
our ‘Leon learning’ in Digital Literacy.
Learners explore the Place
Between We used the Immersive Learning
Suite to visit the Place Between.
Green Screen Poetry The winners of our poetry competition
recorded their poems using our own
magic box (green screen)!
Prezi Presentations Years 2, 3 & 4 used on online presen-
tation app to imagine what they would
find if they explored the Place Be-
tween.
Watch Year 2
respond to their
learning in the
clip below.
Radio Radio Rudston doesn’t make itself! All
year groups have contributed to the plan-
ning and production of our broadcasts.
Listen Again All of our live episodes are available as
podcasts for you to listen to. See pic-
tures of each week’s DJs too!
Radio Rudston’s Padlet Padlet is an ‘online corkboard’ that lets
learners instantly share thoughts and
resources to each other. Answer this
week’s question to be part of the show.
Rudston Story This year, we’ve been writing one
chapter of our school story—Galfrid,
the beginner of everything— each
broadcast. The brilliant Eve and Na-
talie from Swift class imagined the
story and wrote the final chapter.
Radio Rudston Access all of the media from our fan-
tastic school radio station below.
Garageband Compositions
All year Key Stage 1 & 2 classes have experimented with composing
music using the Gargeband app. Years 5 & 6 have even used the
app to record jingles for Radio Rudston; pre-record audio features;
interview learners from around the school and make radio adverts.
Broadcasts Radio Rudston is broadcast live, fortnightly, to the whole school.
We cover all aspects of learning throughout the school.
The Rudston Interviews
As part of an after-school club, lean-
ers from Years 5 & 6 have recorded
interviews with members of our local
community. See what interesting
things they had to say here.
Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) Devices
In Digital Literacy lessons this year, learners have had the chance
work together to set-up and play digital music devices—beginning
to explore the vast use of technology in today’s music industry.
