What is Anzac Day?

• Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance and one of the most important occasions in Australia and New Zealand.

• It happens on the 25th April.

• It is very much like Remembrance Day, especially as the red Poppy is used as a symbol for remembering those who fought and died in the First World War.

What is Anzac Day?

In the years 1915, over 8,000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers had died in Gallipoli whilst fighting in the war. What happened in Gallipoli is now known as the ‘ANZAC legend.’ It has a powerful presence and

shapes the history of many people in Australia and New Zealand.

A typical Anzac Day ceremony consists of a prayer service, the laying of wreaths, a period of silence, the national anthem and the placing of

poppies by names of relatives on the Memorial’s Roll of Honour.
