National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference Be On the Lookout Tuesday July 17, 2012 Fort Collins,Colorado Welcome to Fort Collins! This is an exciting week filled with activities and one of the highlights of any Explorer’s time in our movement. It’s an opportunity to meet and renew friendships with those who share many interests with you including a passion for competing and a desire to be a leader. It has been a great experience being your National Youth Representative since you elected me in July 2010. It’s opened my eyes up to the incredible impact Exploring has on so many lives and on the future not just of law enforcement, but of communities around the country. About Me I have been attending California State University, Bakersfield pursuing a degree in Public Policy and Administration with a minor in Criminal Justice. Exploring has changed my life and set me on the perfect track for a law enforcement career. I plan on attending the Bakersfield Police Department’s POST Academy to gain patrol experience to join the Bakersfield Police Department. Eventually however, I would love to work for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Each agency I have visited has shown it has a great deal to offer, and working with DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart has opened my eyes up to DEA’s mission, and I want to be part of it someday. Seeing Beyond Myself and My Community Through National Engagement My experience in national leadership has made me see firsthand how our movement is larger than individual posts and bigger than the communities and states we live in. National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference

Be On the Lookout

Tuesday July 17, 2012 Fort Collins,Colorado

Welcome to Fort Collins!

About MeI have been attending

California State University, Bakersfield pursuing a degree in Public Policy and Administration with a minor in Criminal Justice.

Seeing Beyond Myself and My Community Through National Engagement

My experience in national leadership has made me see firsthand how our movement is larger than individual posts and bigger than the communities and states we live in.

Leadership is vital to our nation, and the more leaders we have and the more leadership skills we develop, the better off our country will be. This week

you’ll get a sense of this, but know that our movement and the skills we are developing continue all year long and in between conferences. It involves local, regional, state, and federal leaders at the highest levels of law enforcement—and it involves all of us who are learning and leading through Exploring. Conclusion

Being your National Youth Representative has been the most honorable thing I have ever done in my life. I could not think of anything I would have rather done the last two years than represent this great nation of Law Enforcement Explorers.

For my predecessor, in the end, this position will be what you make of it. We live in exciting times, and this is a great time to be involved in Exploring. Thank you all again for putting your faith in me and I look forward to making new friends and seeing old friends, advisors and leaders this week in Ft CollinsI

For the first time at nationals, an Exploring post has arranged for a blood drive for Explorers (18 and up), advisors, and members of the CSU community who wish to help save lives through making a blood donation.

Operated by Bonfils Blood Center and sponsored by the Montgomery County, Maryland Police Department Post 1986, this concept came about earlier this year when

the post sponsored its first blood drive last September in Maryland. For the post, which has been in existence since 1974 and for years has sent a large group of Explorers to nationals, having a blood drive at CSU was a natural evolution of the concept. “We found a great partner who was willing to bring a full bloodmobile to campus, and gave our Explorers an opportunity to help them with their important work of collecting blood for those that need it such as accident victims and those who need operations, for example,” said Advisor Charles Carpenter who expects appointments for the 66 donor slots will be filled by the

time the bloodmobile drives away Thursday afternoon. Want to make a donation? Take a moment to stop

by the Montgomery County Maryland booth at Exploring USA, or call Explorer Lieutenants Matt Platko and Lauren Washington at 240-876-1962 or [email protected] to arrange a time to donate between 10:30 and 3:30 on Thursday. Then show up at your appointed time at the bloodmobile which will be located in the parking lot of the Natural Resources Center, just south of the Lory Student Center.

Thank you for making a difference in the life of others!

Bad things happen to good people, and Exploring lost Cesar Rodriguez, a great young man who had a bright future in law enforcement last August 28th when he and a friend, Larry Villegras, were gunned down two blocks from his home in Whittier, California.

Cesar was active in Exploring in the Norwalk (California) Sheriff’s Station from August of 2007 until his untimely death at the age of 19. “He begged us to let him become an Explorer when he was only 13… he always wanted to help people,” said his mother Lupe Rodriguez.

Cesar was killed after getting off duty at Target where he was a security guard. His ultimate goal was to join the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, whose flags were lowered to half-staff in his honor. He was well on his way to fulfilling that dream, having passed

the written exam just days before he was killed.

While his post never went to nationals they competed locally, and Cesar stood out as a leader and as a member of his post’s honor guard.

In the wake of his killing, dozens of Explorers searched for witnesses and assisted with the police in their investigation, which remains open. His memory continues to inspire his peers, some of whom have gone on to begin their law enforcement careers while others continue to follow in his footsteps, including his brother Hector who also was active in Exploring.

Please keep Cesar’s family in your prayers and join his fellow Explorers and his friends in hoping those responsible for his death are soon brought to justice for killing one of our own.
