The first step is todetermine which type ofSly scrubber to select. The nature of the pollutantor contaminant will determine if the Venturi,Impinjet, or combinationscrubber system is bestsuited for your application.

Sizing the scrubber isthe next step. The factorsaffecting sizing are gas flowrate, temperature, pressure, gas composition, humidity, contaminant loading anddesired outlet conditions. Also, the availability of anappropriate scrubbingliquid is an importantconsideration.

Gas streams entering awet scrubber may or maynot be fully saturated, however they will exit thescrubber fully saturated. This process of saturationresults in a change involume, temperature anddensity.

The overall scrubbersize (diameter) is afunction of velocity ofsaturated gas through thescrubber shell. By knowingthe moisture content of agas stream (generallyexpressed as pounds ofwater per pound of dry gas)and the inlet temperature;the saturation temperatureand saturated volumecontent can be calculated. The volume correctionchart at the right can beused for a close approxima-tion of the change in gasvolume.

Example:10,000 ACFM @ 450°Fcontaining 0.15# H2O/#dry air

The chart shows acorrection factor of 0.75. Inletvolume x correction factor =outlet volume or 10,000 x 0.75= 7500 ACFM. The scrubberwould be sized for thissaturated outlet volume.

For Impinjet scrubbers, the maximum capacity isbased on shell velocity of 500feet per minute. Dividing thecorrected or saturatedvolume by 500 yields theoverall tower cross-sectionalarea from which the diametercan be determined.

Example (continued):7500 ft3/min = 15 ft2

500 ft/minArea = 15 ft2 = πD2

4D=diameterDiameter = 4.37 ft

The calculated diameterbecomes the reference pointfor equipment selection.(Refer to specific productbulletin.)

The approximateparticulate and/or mistefficiencies for Venturis andImpinjet scrubbers can bedetermined by the efficiencychart on the right.

To determine the numberof Impinjet stages requiredfor the absorption of gasessuch as acids, requires acomplex calculation with toomany variables to use asimple chart. However, foreither particulate or

absorption the followinginformation is important:- gas volume- process description- temperature- particle size- moisture content- type of contaminant

4.) Both particlecollection andabsorption of gases, vapors, etc. can bedone at the same time.

5.) Multiple stages canbe provided.

6.) No moving parts to maintain.

7.) Extensive experiencewith many applicationsavailable.

8.) Needs less scrubbingfluid than most otherscrubbers.

9.) Can handle high temperatures and temperature fluctuations.

Cooling andCondensing

The outlet gas can becooled to less than 5°Fabove the temperature ofthe incoming liquid. Oftensolvents such as alcohols, pentane, hexane, acetone, ethylene glycol, chloro-form, etc. are recoveredfrom inert gas streamssuch as nitrogen or carbondioxide. Chilled solvent isused as direct contactcondensing liquid andremoves the heat from thegas stream as it gains heat.

Scrubbers also recoverwaste heat. Heat fromdryers and other processesthat would normally beexhausted can be used toheat water being fed to thescrubber almost to the wetbulb temperature of theinlet gas. For cooling and

Rugged and uncompli-cated in design, ImpinjetScrubbers can realizeefficiencies in excess of99% on many types ofdust or gases. Capacitiesrange from 500 to over100,000 CFM. Dependingupon application, waterrequirements vary fromless than 1-1/2 GPM per1,000 ACFM to a typical 3GPM per 1,000 ACFM.

Unique flexibility isfurnished by ImpinjetScrubbers. Made with thefuture in mind, additionalstages can be added toexisting installations toimprove efficiency tohandle tomorrow’srequirements–withoutincreasing liquid con-sumption. There is no needto buy complete new units.

Benefits1.) High absorption

efficiency for gasesand vapors. Expertsagree that plate towershave the ability toremove gaseous pollu-tants to any desiredconcentration if a suf-ficient number ofplates are used. Thismeans high masstransfer rates can beachieved.

2.) 98+% collection efficiency for particles5 microns in size or larger.

3.) These high efficienciesare achieved at a lowpressure drop.

condensing and for heatrecovery, our designs canaccommodate highhydraulic loadings.

Operating PrinciplesThe gas passes up

through the openings inthe perforated plates (trays)which hold a bed of liquid. The secret is in thescrubber’s design whichuses an impingement baffleabove each individual hole.

The tiny droplets, created by the wetted baffles, are the heart of the collection process.

Gas velocities of 60 to75 feet/second through theholes result in thousands ofjets which atomize theliquid into droplets on theorder of 100 microns indiameter to clean the contaminated gas. Thisentraps the particles in thescrubbing liquid. Each jetaspirates liquid from theblanket of scrubbing fluidand results in a wetted target surface on the bafflewhich is located just abovethe point of maximumvelocity (vena contracta).

In operation, thescrubber is highly pluggage-resistant. Thecontinuous violent agitation of the blanket ofscrubbing fluid preventssettling of particles andflushes them away.

Intimate gas/liquidcontact results in themaximum collection efficiency for particles anddroplets as well asabsorption (mass transfer)of gases and vapors. Whenused for absorption, lowoutlet emissions can beachieved by virtue of thescrubber’s countercurrentoperation. The SlyImpinjet Gas Scrubber isable to reduce gaseouspollutants to any desiredconcentration if asufficient number of platestages is used.

See data sheet fortechnical details.

1.) Scrubber Outlet

2.) Fixed Blade Mist Eliminator- assures droplet-free air toprocess or atmosphere.

3.) Impingement Baffle Plates -create interaction of gasstream and liquid.Additional plates (trays, stages) provide increasedefficiency.

4.) Plate Discharge and SealDrain - directs slurry to bottom of scrubber forremoval. Non-clogging sealprevents short circuiting ofgas.

5.) Liquid Supply and Weir(dam) - adjustable weirprovides uniform liquidflow to plates.

6.) Spray Section - for cooling and entrapmentof larger particles. Spray washes under side of plate and walls to prevent materialbuild-up. Sprays arenon-clogging.

7.) Gas Inlet

Venturi Effect resultsin turbulent interaction of liquidand particulate-ladengas flowing throughperforated plate andstriking the wettedimpingement bafflegrid. (Each hole hasan individual impingement surface.) Minute

liquid droplets are formed which entrap suspended matter in gas. Particulate carrying droplets mix withwater flowing across baffles for ultimate disposalthrough the drain. Cleaned gas passes through the misteliminator for return to process or atmosphere.

Operating PrinciplesThe incoming gas is

accelerated to a highvelocity at the scrubber’sthroat where it comes intocontact with the scrubbingliquid. The liquid isatomized into fine dropletswhich entrap the particu-late with high collectionefficiency.

Downstream from thethroat, the cleaned gasdecelerates and theparticulate-laden dropletscollide and agglomerate. The large, heavy, agglom-erated droplets are driveninto the flooded elbow foreasy disposal. Droplets toosmall for collection at theflooded elbow are collectedin the separator tocomplete the cleaningoperation.

Pressure drop acrossthe venturi throat is ameasure of the energyneeded to atomize thescrubbing liquid and toperform the cleaningoperation. The higher thepressure drop, the higherthe collection efficiency.

The Sly Venturi offersthe most efficient designfor putting pressure dropto work. Its adjustablethroat feature optimizesscrubbing efficiency bymaintaining just the rightpressure drop. This, combined with the unit’senergy regain section, significantly reducespower consumption andoperating costs.

See data sheet for technicaldetails.

Gas Scrubber Removes Hazardous Vapors — An Impinjet® gas scrubber hasbeen employed by a major producer of industrial chemicals to remove hazardous(noxious) vapors. The scrubber vents both bottle filling and dry bulk filling areas atthe company, which produces hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acid as well asformaldehyde and ammonia.

The system handles 2,500 CFM. Efficiencies exceeding 95% are reported. The highefficiency of the scrubbing system is due to the unique design of the impingementbaffle plates, which cause the contaminated air to mix intimately with the scrubbingsolution.

Scrubber Cleans and Absorbs Acid Gases and Particulate From MedicalWaste Incinerator — An Impinjet® wet gas scrubber is used by this company to cleanexhaust gases from its medical waste incinerator.

7258 CFM of gas at 1800°F from a 100 lb. per hour incinerator is handled by this skid-mounted wet gas scrubber. A proven impingement design creates turbulent conditions toinsure intimate contact between particulates and acid gases for thorough removal ofpollutants, including HCL.

Scrubber Collects SO2 And Particulate At Reprocessor of PetroleumCatalysts — An Impinjet® gas scrubber is used by this recycler of spent petroleumand chemical refining catalysts to clean flue gas from its ovens.

Carbon and sulfur from used catalysts is thermally oxidized by the company, creatingsulfur dioxide and particulates, primarily carbon. Previously, a packed tower stylescrubber was used to clean the resulting flue gas. Unfortunately, the packed towertended to channel, as well as not collect particulate. The Sly scrubber uses a provenimpingement design, which creates turbulent conditions to insure intimate contactbetween the gas contaminants and the scrubbing solution. This results in efficientremoval of both particulate and SO2.

Eductor Venturi/Packed Tower Combination Removes Particulate andAbsorbs Alcohol Vapors — A combined eductor/packed tower collector thatremoves solid particulate and absorbs alcohol has been successfully employed by thismajor specialty chemical producer.

The equipment vents a variety of process equipment. The eductor venturi induces thegas flow using a high pressure and volume of recirculated water focused into the throatof the venturi. Particulate matter is removed in the venturi.

After the eductor, a packed tower scrubber with an extended packed section removesalcohol vapors by counter-current contact with a once through flow of fresh water. Theequipment is stainless steel construction, designed for 500 CFM.

Many companies makeair pollution controlequipment, but none havebeen doing it as long as Sly.

More than a centuryhas passed since ouroriginal patent for clothdust filters. Over the years,we’ve learned plenty aboutthe application andfabrication of dustcollectors and scrubbers. Here are the main points:

“In the pollutioncontrol business, conservativeapplication oftechnology is best.”

Equipment misappli-cation has no place in thepollution control business. Not only is improperequipment apt to fall shortof collection requirements,it is oftentimes moreexpensive to operate thanthe proper machinery. Forexample, incorrect sizingand improper mediachoice can easily lead toexcessive maintenance andcostly downtime. Whenyou deal with Sly, we haveyour best long terminterests in mind.

“We believe in fittingthe equipment to thecustomer’s needs, notthe customer to theequipment’scapabilities.”

Unlike many equip-ment suppliers, we refuseto mass-produce productand then hope for a goodfit. We have maintainedflexibility in our engineer-ing techniques whichpermits us to manufactureeach order to fit the task athand, while maintaining aprice to you that iscomparable to mass-produced equipment.

In many cases it costs no more to get the very bestequipment for the job. This approach earns us

the respect and repeatbusiness of many sophisti-cated buyers of pollutioncontrol equipment. Thesepeople, many of whom buydozens of collectors orscrubbers every few years, have always represented alarge portion of ourcustomer base.

“We build our ownequipment...for somevery good reasons.”

Part of the reason Slycan custom-make acollector for you whilekeeping a competitive priceis just that: we are themanufacturer. Unlike themajority of our competi-tors, we don’t job out ourproduction. We do our ownengineering, sewing, metalfabrication, painting, assembly, quality control, and laboratory R&D. Thisway we control every stepof the process, allowing usgreat flexibility to build thebest collector or scrubberfor your individual needs. We have a strong commit-ment to shipping dates androutinely guarantee shipdates when requested.

“Our obligation to thecustomer doesn’t endwhen the equipmentis shipped.”

Sly’s staff engineerscan promptly assist you introubleshooting or withother field service

problems should theyarise at your facility. Thiscommitment to totalcustomer support helpsguarantee superior valuefor your investment.

“We’re a privatecompany, and intendto stay that way.”

The corporaterestructurings and shortterm goals of today’sbusiness scene aren’t forus. Sly is owned andoperated by descendantsof the founding family. Weare in the business for thelong run, and willmaintain the professional-ism and continuityrequired to contribute tothe long term success ofyour business.

Pressure drop is animportant consideration inevaluating the efficiencyexpected of a scrubber in agiven application and in fan, drive and motor selection.

When high efficiency isrequired, the use of additionalstages provides a correspond-ing increase in pressure drop.

The above chart showsstandard pressure drop ininches, w.g., across scrubberfor 1 stage, 2 stages and 3stages.

To correct pressure drop tooperating conditions, multiplystandard pressure drop by theratio of outlet density tostandard density.

Example: Using .0615 #/Cu. Ft. Dry Air from DensityCorrection example and the 1stage average capacitypressure drop of 3" at 70°F.(density .075) the operatingpressure drop is: 3" H2O x.0615/.075 = 2.46 inches, w.g.

Collect Particulatesand Absorb Odors,Vapors and Gases

Rugged and uncompli-cated in design, ImpinjetScrubbers can realize efficiencies in excess of99% on many types ofdust or gases.

Both particle collec-tion and absorption ofgases, odors, vapors, etc.can be done at the sametime.

Cleans and ReclaimsThe Sly Venturi

Scrubber serves industry inseveral ways. It removespollutants present inprocess gas streams. Thisincludes removinghazardous and nuisancedusts, fumes and mistsfrom stack gases. Cleaningprocess gas streams toremove oils, dusts andother particulate, thisscrubber offers an opportu-nity to recycle these gasesas fuels or process rawmaterials.

Venturi ScrubberHighlights• Collects fine particles &

mists• Adjustable throat

permits fine-tuning tomaximize efficiency

• High efficiencies for sub-micron particulate

• Water requirements aretypically 7.5 GPM per1000 CFM

• Capacities from 1000 to100,000 CFM

Collect UltrafineParticles and Mists

The Venturi Scrubberuses the differentialbetween high velocitygases and free-flowingwater to create dropletswhich entrap contami-nants, hold them insuspension and deliverthem as a highly concen-trated slurry.

Unsurpassed forSeparating andRecovering LiquidMists and UltrafineParticulate

Simple in design, yethighly efficient, the SlyVenturi Scrubber incorporates featurescalculated to maximizecollection efficiency whileminimizing operating andmaintenance costs. Theyrange from a non-plugging, trouble-freemethod of introducingscrubbing liquid and asimple, easily-adjustedthroat for optimizing efficiency, to a floodedelbow arrangement thatcollects agglomeratedparticulate whileproviding an abrasion-resistant barrier to deterscrubber wear.
