Spanish / Latin Selection

New this year, all 6th grade students will begin either a Latin or Spanish track for their middle school language classes, taking three consecutive years in the same language. All 7th grade students will continue their language studies by selecting either Latin I or Spanish I and continuing on to Latin II or Spanish II in 8th grade (see table below). This will give WCA students the unique opportunity to complete the two-year high school language requirement for admission to most colleges by earning these high school credits in middle school.* In addition to receiving excellent instruction here at WCA, completing these courses will afford students greater opportunities in high school with the requirement completed.

The WCA Advanced Academic Studies Program

The WCA Middle School Honors Studies Program is designed for qualifying students to study mathematics at an accelerated rate. Students in this program may complete one or more mathematic high school level courses for high school credit before entering high school. This program also provides students with the foundation to excel in future Advanced Placement (AP) and college dual enrollment courses. The honors studies program is taught at two levels: Advanced and GEM (Great Explorations in Math). The Advanced level courses are one year ahead with students able to take high school level Algebra I in their 8th grade year. The GEM courses are two years ahead with students taking two high school level honors courses: Algebra I Honors (7th grade) and Geometry Honors (8th grade). Expect these courses to be both fast-paced and comprehensive in nature. The requirements for honors level work are as follows: 1) an “A” average in the subject area the two previous semesters 2) a 70 percentile or higher on a national standardized test in that subject area 3) no conduct/behavior issues 4) previous teacher’s recommendation. The requirements for GEM level mathematics are as follows: 1) an “A” average in the subject area the two previous semesters 2) an 80 percentile or higher on a national standardized test in that subject area 3) no conduct/behavior issues 4) previous teacher’s recommendation. All advanced academic students must maintain a minimum grade the first quarter of a new course. Honors course students must maintain a first quarter 80% or higher grade; GEM course students must maintain a first quarter 85% or higher grade. Students who fall below these minimum averages may be transferred the second quarter to the next level math course. In the sciences, the 8th grade Physical Science is instructed as an advanced course. Physical Science is a high school level course.
