  • HOPE FARMS

    REAP, SOW, & GROW

    HOUSTON, TX

    OVERVIEW

Hope Farms is an urban farm to be located in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Houston. Sunnyside faces a crucial community issue of being a food desert, or an area that has little or no fresh food and produce options.

The site began taking shape by connecting the various neighborhood elements through direct paths across the site. The connections began to form a central hub of activity for the site and created the sites new shape.

The architecture forms around the courtyard enveloping it and making it the main focus and gathering space of the site. A series of repeated roofs and wooden rain screen facade emulates the rhythmic motions of theplanting fields. The roof array created opportunity for solar arrays to catch and power the farms electrical and hot water needs.

    PRESERVE x RESTORE

    CAMP WALLACE, TX

    OVERVIEW

The University of Houston Coastal Center is a science laboratory that is sited at an old World War II training base known as Camp Wallace.

Several program elements are needed to improve the existing conditions of the site including renovating the existing labs, clearing out invasive species, and creating new program elements like a green airport and a public park infrastructure.

The coastal center has several ruin like elements scattered at the southern end of the site. The old war theater foundation remains and could be converted into a useful program element going forward.

    SOUND SPA

    HOUSTON TX

    OVERVIEW

Houstons midtown is becoming an artistic downtown destination. Many bars and nightlife elements as well as residential developments are creating a prime environment to have a service orientated business like a day spa.

The Sound Spa takes several unique site obstacles like sound infiltration from the traffic heavy streets and the local light rail system. The spa plans to mitigate these issues through material selections, program placements, and mechanical systems.

    TREE OF KNOWLEDGE

    outside KAMPALA, UGANDA

    OVERVIEW

Africa Renewal University is a small Christian University that provides advanced education and community services to a small village outside of Kampala. The concept behind Tree of Knowledge is that the building provides a variety of intimate indoor and social outdoor classroom and socialization spaces. Because the building is naturally ventilated, it is perforated in a way to allow natural lighting to penetrate the spaces during specific hours of the day.

The central stair ramp is the social gathering hub between classes that allows students to socialize without disturbing the open air classroom environments. The cantilever columns collect rainwater and allow daylight into the pavilion through a recycled plastic view port. The tree court (the Tree of Knowledge) would be an outdoor classroom that provides an amphitheater type space outdoors when the weather is appropriate.
