The Division of Graduate and Continuing Education is now accepting nominations for the John F. Nevins Outstanding Educator Award.

The award is named after one of Westfield State College’s consummate educators and administrators. Dr. Nevins began his career at Westfield State University in 1969, and served the college in many roles: as a Professor of Education in both undergraduate and graduate programs, as Dean of Undergraduate Studies in 1978, as Vice President for Academic Affairs, 1978-1986, as President, 1986-1987, and again as Vice President in 1987-1988. Dr. Nevins was the recipient of the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education’s Outstanding Educator Award in 1993, and after his death the award was re-named in his honor.

Students in the Division, and faculty, staff or administrative members of the greater college community, may nominate any faculty member teaching for the Division (full- or part-time) during the Summer, Fall or Spring semesters. The deadline for nominations is April 1.

The selection will be made by a panel of judges consisting of representatives from the DGCE student body and Westfield State University administration, staff and faculty. The award will be made at the end of the spring semester.

It is your responsibility to arrange an appointment with the advisor as soon as you are admitted into a program to outline your program of study, taking into consideration previous work and your academic objectives. Although your advisor will assist you in plan-ning your program, you must assume responsibility for knowing and meeting the curriculum requirements.

WithdRaWal fRom couRsesYou may withdraw from courses before the second scheduled meet-ing without notation on your permanent record. You must withdraw in writing. A Withdrawal Form is available in the DGCE Office. If you withdraw after the second class meeting, you must obtain the signature of the faculty member.

Non-attendance does not ensure withdrawal from a course. It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from courses as outlined above, or a “Failure to Withdraw” grade of “F” will result. At the instruc-tor’s discretion, a student may sometimes be reported for non-atten-dance and an Administrative Withdrawal may be requested, but it should not be assumed that non-attendance will result in withdrawal from a course. In addition, non-payment does not result in Adminis-trative Withdrawal from a course.

Taken during registration periods and the first three weeks of classes, the picture I.D. will cost $10.00 and will be used throughout your academic career at Westfield State University. Refundsrefunds of tuition and instructional fee, if any, are made on the basis of the date and time of receipt of a student’s withdrawal. Non-payment does not result in withdrawal from a course. Students who officially withdraw from a course after the second scheduled class and within the allowable withdrawal period will receive a designation of W. The registration fee is non-refundable.

For refund and withdrawal purposes, Online and Brick & Click courses are deemed to begin “meeting” on the first day of the semester at 9 a.m., unless otherwise noted. They will be considered “meeting” as other in-person courses that begin the first day of the term (i.e., once per week for fourteen weeks in fall/spring, twice per week for six weeks, or every day in winter). This refund and withdrawal schedule follows this “meet” schedule and is effective regardless of individual student login.

financial aidThe Financial Aid Office at Westfield State University is located within the Student Administrative Service Center and is committed to insuring that no student is unable to pursue his or her educa-tional goals for lack of financial resources. Westfield State University participates in a wide variety of federal, state, and private programs. Assistance can be in the form of gift aid (scholarships and grants) and self-help programs (loans, work study and graduate assistantships).

The staff of the Financial Aid Office are available for assistance at 572-5218.

delayed paymentWestfield State University offers a program for matriculated students that allows for payment of tuition over a period of time during the semester. Students must meet the following requirements:

• Matriculation in a degree or certification program through DGCE.

• Payment of the application fee (non-refundable).

• Ability to pay total tuition and fees by published due dates.

• Students must follow all regulations regarding withdrawals as stated in the Division’s refund policy, and are responsible for total payment even if they withdraw before the end of the semester and regardless of grade. No student may apply for delayed payment who has been sent to a Collection Agent or placed in Administrative Withdrawal. First payment due at registration.

Students must complete the application and have it approved before they may register into courses. The application must be completed each semester. There is a late payment penalty charge if bills are not paid in full by the date of the final payment. Any account sent to Collection is charged a 20% collection fee.

The first payment is due with registration, and includes the $100 non-refundable fee. The remaining payments are due according to the following schedule:

senioR citizen tuition WaiveRIn accordance with Chapter 915 of the Acts of 1977, Common-wealth of Massachusetts, the WSC Division of Graduate and Continuing Education will waive tuition for persons over 60 for Massachusetts residents only, provided registration, institutional fees and related expenses are borne by the student.

Students must have the Waiver Form completed in advance of reg-istration. The form is available in the Continuing Education Office. Proof of date of birth is required.
