Jolene Cooper and Rita Cooper 2 Starboard Way Isle of Dogs London E14 8PE 19 July 2017 Dear Ms J and Ms R Cooper, Response to formal complaint We would like to thank you for getting in touch and raising your concerns regarding the demolition of the former Westferry Printworks. We appreciate your efforts in organising the residents’ meeting last week, making the various arrangements and helping to chair the meeting. The team found it very helpful to listen to all of your concerns and consider how we can help moving forwards. In response to your complaints and queries we have responded individually to each numbered point and bullet point raised in your letter.

1. We are sorry that you are experiencing no respite from the noise. Noise emissions on site fluctuate according to the types of activities undertaken. Impact breaking out of materials takes place between 10.00 and 16.00 Mondays to Friday. Non-percussive demolition activities take place between 08.00 and 17.00 Monday to Friday, and between 08.00 and 13.00 on Saturdays. Noise emissions are closely monitored on site to enable the team to stay within noise emission guidelines agreed by Tower Hamlets. You may notice that the demolition team have been limiting the works carried out on Saturday mornings, which we hope will provide some respite.

2. Demolition work does invariably generate dust and is usually the dustiest stage of development works. The water cannons used on site are part of a series of dust mitigation measures used to mitigate dust. Unfortunately dust cannot be eliminated because of the nature of the emission. Dust can only be mitigated or suppressed. Please see further down in this letter more information on the dust mitigation measures used at the Westferry site. Dust emissions are closely monitored on site to enable the demolition team to stay within dust emission guidelines agreed by Tower Hamlets.

3. The stockpile closest to the Starboard Way boundary was removed two weeks ago. We apologise that the proximity of stockpiled concrete to Starboard Way has alarmed people, and caused people to be worry that garden walls would collapse. The garden wall at the rear of Starboard Way has been deemed ‘safe’ by structural engineers and surveys have indicated that the condition of the wall has not deteriorated since the works commenced, nevertheless, we will be reinforcing the wall shortly.

The Westferry Printworks team and their principal contractor on site, Dyer and Butler, both celebrated the advent of Christmas with two different charities local to the Isle of Dogs in December: Mudchute Farm with the Special Educational Needs students at Geroge Green School and the Strafford Street Friendship Club. Bingo was a major player in the celebrations!

The folk of the Strafford Street Friendship Club played host at a Christmas lunch party with members of the Westferry team one afternoon in December.

A delicious traditional pie and mash lunch was served by staff from the Westferry team to a large number of older folk who live in the area and was followed by an afternoon of Bingo.

With Mahir as Bingo caller, and prize money donated by the Westferry team, a great time was had by a Full House and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the Club members, and Chair Rita Bensley for their help hosting the event.

Over at Mudchute Farm a few days later, Dyer and Butler who are managing Package 3 on site at Westferry Printworks and some of the Westferry team, joined in Christmas celebrations with the students from the Special Educational Needs group at George Green School to play a game of Bingo!

The group of 20 students love playing Bingo but naturally find it challenging, and with a number of helpers on hand from the Farm and Westferry, every one of them enjoyed a Full House!

With Alan playing Bingo caller - a born natural - prizes were generously donated by Dyer and Butler so that each of the students received a goody box of toiletries.

Our grateful thanks go to Denise, Lucy and Shelly from Mudchute Farm for organising the morning and we really hope the children enjoyed themselves.
