Hitchhiking is fairly common and per-fectly legal, except on motorways and a fewmajor highways. Even young women hitchin Slovenia, but its never totally safe andLonely Planet doesnt recommend it.
TrainSlovenske eleznice (Slovenian Railways;%01-291 3332 from 5am-10pm; www.slo-zeleznice.si)has a usefulonline timetable. Buy tickets before boarding
or youll incur a 500SIT supplement, exceptfor IC trains where the surcharge can run upto 1000SIT. Note that the fast IC trains aremore expensive than the local variety.
A useful and very scenic rail line fromBled Jezero station via Bohinjska Bistrica
(Bohinj) cuts under roadless mountains toMost na Soi (for Kobarid), then down theSoa Valley to Nova Gorica. Cars are car-ried through the tunnel section on specialAvtovlak trains.
