OUR 180TH PRODUCTION

Page 2: WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE · production of Legally Blonde and couldn’t wait to come back for more! She was most recently seen Off-Broadway in Cole Porter’s Nymph Errant and

In 1938, to escape from Nazi occupied Austria, the von Trapp family traveled by train to Italy, and then to New York, leav-ing behind everyone they knew and all the possessions they owned. It was in America that they made a new life for themselves in Stowe, Vermont. The wonderful landscape of Vermont reminded them of their beloved Austria. Here they set up home, and toured throughout America and thirty other coun-tries, under the name of The von Trapp Family Singers.

Maria von Trapp wrote her autobiographical book ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers’ which was published in 1949. Seven years later, German Film producer Wolfgang Reinhardt bought the rights to the story and two movies were then made – ‘Die Trapp Familie’ (1956), and the sequel ‘Die Trapp Familie in Amerika’ (1958), which were extremely popular in Germany, Europe and South America, but were little known in North America. Hollywood actress and Broadway star, Mary Martin, and her hus-band/manager, Richard Halliday, really liked the story and decided to buy the rights for a stage version. Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse were enlisted to write the script. The plan was for it to be a play rather than a musical, adding in some original songs from the Trapp Family Singers. Rodgers and Hammerstein preferred to write a completely

new set of songs for The Sound of Music, rather than try to mix two different styles of music.

It has been said of the pair that they changed the destiny of American musical theater. The Sound of Music ended up being the most finan-cially successful film adaptation of a Broadway musical ever made. During the writing of The Sound of Music, Oscar Hammerstein fell ill. He died nine months after the opening of The Sound of Music on Broadway. Hammerstein never got to see the wonderful screen version. The beautiful ballad “Edelweiss” was the last song he put words to.

The Sound of Music opened on November 16th, 1959 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York, with Mary Martin as Maria, and Theodore Bikel (another Austrian exile, just like the real version) as the Captain. Audiences just loved it! The Sound of Music ran for 1443 performances, eventually closing on June 15th, 1963. The show won numerous awards, including a Tony in 1960 for Best Musical (tied with Fiorello).

The original sound recording from the show sold more than three million albums. Despite the success of the Broadway show, it wasn’t until the story was made into the film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, that all those unforgettable songs that we all now know became famous throughout the world.

BOB FUNKING/BILL STUTLER (Owners/ Executive Producers) July 9, 2013 marks the 39th Anniversary for the Westchester Broadway Theatre and the 22nd Anniversary in this spe-cifically designed, state of the art theatre. Bill and Bob, 2004 inductees into the “Westchester County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they established their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. The Sound of Music is our 180th Mainstage Production.) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclusive-ly for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway performers at auditions in New York City, and hiring the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 Monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugurated the Gold Star Series of Concerts presenting Jackie Mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte. With the continued support of the people of the tri-state area, we pledge to continue to present the best in theatre and dining.
