Welcome
Lying in the enviably tranquil Surrey countryside, West Surrey
Golf Club is home to a jewel of a course situated in the south
west of the county.
Our 18 hole, Par 71, course is one of the finest in the area and
has a distinct advantage over many of our competitors.
It presents an interesting challenge to golfers of all abilities, with
tree lined watered fairways leading to superb sand based USGA
standard greens that provide a high quality putting surface all
year round.
The practice facilities are a quick way to improve your short
game, long drives and putting before heading out onto the
course.
Our clubhouse, reminiscent of a 19th century Surrey farmhouse,
provides excellent facilities for entertaining, dining and relaxation
after a round. With stunning views out to the course it is also
popular for functions.
West Surrey offers a range of membership options for golfers
of all abilities .
We pride ourselves on the friendliness of our staff who aim to
provide the very highest standard of customer service to make
each visit as enjoyable as possible for visitors and members alike.

History
The Club was founded in 1910 as a commercial venture by a
prominent local landowner and businessman, John Eastwood,
with the course sited on farmland belonging to Eastwood’s
Enton Hall estate.
Following initial design by the noted golf professional, J.H.
Taylor, the course was laid out by W.H. Fowler, a leading course
architect of his day, who during his career had a hand in the
design of some 40 courses in the UK and the USA, most notably
Walton Heath.
The clubhouse was designed by Albert Messer who had already
created Woking’s clubhouse. Traditional building materials from
barns on the Estate were used to ensure the character of the
clubhouse, the charm of which is still evident today.
Ten years after its foundation, the club was bought by the
membership, and a limited company was formed. By 1921, there
were 400 members, of which 144 were ladies.
During the Second World War, the clubhouse was requisitioned
as a billet for Canadian troops. Vegetables were planted on land
covering four fairways and the full course was not re-instated
until 1949. In the immediate post-war period membership
shrunk below 200, and financial losses mounted.
Post-war West Surrey Golf Club worked to build our members
base back up and after a resettling period the course was once
again thriving with a full members list.
www.wsgc.co.uk | 7
In the 1990’s the clubhouse was renovated and in 2002 a heavy
investment in the course saw the installation of fairway watering
and the construction of new free draining, sand based greens
to USGA standard. At the same time several fairways were
lengthened with the course
extended to just under 6500 yards.
In 2010 we celebrated our centenary. To mark the occasion a
range of events were held at the club. This included a centenary
luncheon which was attended by the Captain of the R&A
and representatives of the English Golf Union and the English
Women’s Golf Association. During the day a team of golfers
played our course dressed in Edwardian attire and using clubs
similar to those that would have been used at the time.

About the Course
The new watering system has also enabled the green keeping
staff to present fairways of a consistently high standard on all
holes, whatever the summer weather.
With the replacement of the greens, the opportunity was taken
to extend the course from 6,258 yards to 6,482 yards with an
addition of even more challenging drives required.
The course itself winds slowly upwards towards its highest point
440 feet above sea level, around the 16th tee. From there, apart
from a teasing climb to the 17th, it begins a gentle descent back
to the old Surrey farmhouse style clubhouse.
The view from the 18th tee down to the clubhouse and over
to the Hogs Back is one to remember and it is not fanciful
imagination to say that the course as a whole has the tranquillity
and charm of a bygone age.

Hole-by-Hole
Hole 1 – 377 yards, Par 4
A drive just right of centre is the best way to start off your
round in your attempts to find a fairway that slopes from right
to left. An uphill second shot plays a little longer than its yardage
to find the green giving you the chance to start your round with
a birdie.
Hole 2 – 150 yards, Par 3
Three bunkers that lie at the front of the green will punish any
shots that are under-hit so it is advised to use a little extra club
from off the tee to find the back end of the green. From there
the sloping green presents a challenging putt to find the hole.
Hole 3 – 478 yards, Par 4
Two bunkers lie on the right of the fairway making it favourable
to aim for the left side of the faiway from off the tee. Switching
your aim to the right when finding the green should see your ball
run into a strong putting position.
www.wsgc.co.uk | 11
Hole 4 – 427 yards, Par 4
This is the first major challenge of the course. A long carry to the
fairway means a good drive is needed but aim left as a fairway
bunker on the right can cause problems. Three more bunkers
on the approach to the green mean an accurate second shot is
needed, with any mistake being punished by the sand or rough
stuff. If you do manage to find the green in two a tough putt will
mean that a birdie is no guarantee.
Hole 5 – 163 yards, Par 3
It is advised to take a little more club for your tee shot as the
green lies above the tee. A shot to the left is the safe bet with a
large gully to the right which will take away any chance you have
of a birdie on this hole.
Hole 6 – 528 yards, Par 5
Keeping to the right from tee to green is the best way of making
the putting surface in three. The long hitters may be tempted
to go for the green in two but will have to navigate the fairway
bunker which can cause problems for those brave enough to
take them on.
ham_ad_a4_full.indd 1 30/09/2014 10:06:53
www.wsgc.co.uk | 13
Hole 7 – 445 yards, Par 4
The left side of the fairway is often favoured by players with a
deceptive bunker on the right hand side which can catch out
those who mishit their tee shot. Take a little extra club for the
second shot as the uphill lie plays longer than its yardage up to
a two-tiered green.
Hole 8 – 355 yards, Par 4
There is a long carry from the tee to the edge of the fairway but
once that is navigated it is the second shot that often catches
players out. The downhill sloping green means a shot towards
the back end of the putting surface is needed or you will find
your ball rolling into the bunker which surrounds the front of
the green.
Hole 9 – 482 yards, Par 5
This is definitely one that the long hitters will want to take on.
A strong tee shot could see you reach the green in two. The
shorter hitters should aim to the right of the bunker on the
left of the fairway before laying up short of the bunkers that
are found on the approach to the green for the best chance of
finding the green with a birdie opportunity intact.
Hole-by-Hole Continued
www.wsgc.co.uk | 15
Hole-by-Hole Continued
Hole 10 – 180 yards, Par 3
A sloping hole which is all uphill means that using extra club in
your tee shot will be your best bet for getting onto the green.
The green itself slopes from back to front and will punish those
who fall short while the two greenside bunkers have some
frequent visits.
Hole 11 – 400 yards, Par 4
This hole often plays into the wind so your drive needs to be
solid and carry a long way. Your approach shot must do the
same to ensure reaching the green in two or any chance of a
birdie will be gone.
Hole 12 – 166 yards, Par 3
The green is almost entirely surrounded by bunkers which catch
out many golfers. A deadly accurate tee shot is needed to find
the green whilst avoiding the three sand traps. Playing long is
the best bet as the back side of the green is the only part free
of bunkers.
www.wsgc.co.uk | 17
Hole 13 – 329 yards, Par 4
This hole will bring out the tactical side of most golfers. The
short hitters may choose to just sneak onto the fairway from the
tee, whilst the longer drivers may choose to take on the bunkers
in the centre of the fairway but be warned they need a carry
of over 230 yards from the tee. Depending on which route you
decide upon for your opening shot it will dictate whether you
are in line for a birdie on your second.
Hole 14 – 390 yards, Par 4
A dog-leg right following the tee shot sees players take the
inside line to get the best view of the green but two fairway
bunkers can hinder your shot should your aim not be precise.
Bunkers on the left and right of the green will also punish those
who don’t manage to land on the putting surface accurately.
Hole 15 – 331 yards, Par 4
Accuracy is more important than length on this par 4. Two dead
straight shots should see you reach the green in two but some
tough challenges await should you veer off course. The narrow
green slopes from left to right and makes for some difficult putts.
Hole-by-Hole Continued
www.wsgc.co.uk | 19
Hole 16 – 363 yards, Par 4
Trees line the right side of the fairway so favouring the left hand
side is advised. Bunkers guarding the green mean that your
approach shot needs to be handled with care but a birdie on
this hole is a strong possibility.
Hole 17 – 389 yards, Par 4
Your first shot needs to find the fairway for any chance of
reaching the green in two. A long carry between the fairway
and green can catch players out and make it difficult to find the
putting surface should your tee shot find the rough.
Hole 18 – 519 yards, Par 5
The second longest hole on the course finishes your round off
but spectacular views will help you push through to the end.
The long hitters need two straight shots to find the green for
a closing eagle opportunity but even a birdie on this hole is no
poor accomplishment. With your round complete why not go
and enjoy a drink in the clubhouse!

Part of West Surrey is built into the very structure of our
Clubhouse, designed by Arthur Albert Messer in 1910, with the
bricks, tiles and oak posts from three old barns that once stood
on this site all incorporated into the building.
As a result the clubhouse has a special charm which is reminiscent
of the character found in many farmhouses in the 19th century.
Our dining room, with leaded windows, looks out onto the 1st
hole, a feature which delights many of our members to this day,
as it did when the building was first opened.
Our clubhouse offers some of the best facilities that you would
expect from one of Surrey’s finest golf clubs. It does all of this
without losing any of its old charm.
We boast one of the best stocked bars of any golf club in
the county and have a range of traditional ales, lagers and a
carefully selected wine list with fine wines to suit even the most
discerning connoisseur.

IMPROVE YOUR SWING IN JUST 3 MINUTES A DAY!
If you’re frustrated that your golfing performance isn’t improving quite like you’d hoped, you might find there are huge gains to be made by improving your general mobility and stability. Whilst core stability has become a bit of a catchphrase over the past few years, the importance of joint mobility and stability is often overlooked as the foundation of functional performance.
The human body works as one dynamic chain and constitutes an alternating pattern of stable and mobile joints. In the lower body, for example, the foot is stable, the ankle mobile, the knee stable, the hip mobile and the pelvis/sacral/ lumbar spine stable. If for any reason a mobile joint loses range of movement, say in the instance of injury or lack of use, a stable joint may be forced to find further degrees of range in order to allow the body to perform the desired movement.
Where this becomes problematic for golfers is that, in the absence of optimal mobility and stability, both kinetic control and energy transfer through the body and to the club becomes compromised.
The good news is that improving your joint function and therefore performance capacity requires very little additional time or effort providing that you implement an appropriate corrective program for your body. A few minutes per day can be enough to illicit notable improvements in range of motion, pain reduction and skill execution.
If you’re interested in finding out more about your biomechanical profile and which key drills will help unlock your potential, contact the Charlotte Ord Academy today to arrange your consultation.
