The Vocabulary strand is designed to support the Oral Communication, Reading, and Writing strands by helping students develop the ability to understand and use the vocabulary in those strands which come from the Academic Word List (AWL). The AWL contains 570 word families that make up the vast majority of words students need to know in order to comprehend college textbooks. These books can be used as stand alone texts in a vocabulary class or as supple-ments in reading, writing, or oral communication classes.

Contextualized Vocabulary Practice > Vocabulary is always presented and practiced within contexts

that represent real usage. The sentence structure, surrounding language, examples, and collocations represent the language that students will encounter in academic texts.
