Welding Certification and ProceduresCERTIFICATION

When a steel and or aluminum fabrication shop decides to become CWB certified to CSA

W47.1/W47.2 Division 2, a welding engineer is retained as required by the standards. Skarborn

Engineering Ltd performs this role by first reviewing the specific requirements with the client

(processes and equipment used, type of manufacturing, etc) and then preparing documentation

which includes welding procedure specifications, welding procedure data sheets, and guidelines for

welder testing. Once a client has become certified, regular shop audits are performed to ensure

conformance to the welding standards. In addition, Skarborn Engineering Ltd can provide welding

consulting at the bidding stage, guidance and recommendations for ongoing welded fabrication, and

troubleshooting.

The products and components fabricated by these clients under CWB certification have included

structural steel for buildings, jet bridges for airports, rocket launchers for NASA, precipitators and

other pollution control components for the power generation sector, topsides for the White Rose

offshore oil extraction platform, accommodations module for the Hebron offshore oil extraction

platform, aluminum gangways and sign structures, and aluminum boats. Our company provides a

unique level of experience in this field with over 45 years of combined welding engineering between

the two principals.

PROCEDURES

Project specific welding procedures have been prepared for a large number of clients fabricating

varied structures and components. Short descriptions of a select few are provided below. These have

been in conformance with various standards/codes.

Hebron gravity base structure living quarters, clients North Eastern Constructors Ltd and Metal

World Inc, to CSA W47.2 and ISO standards. The multistory structure is constructed in Bull Arm and

Argentia, Newfoundland, with the top stories fabricated from aluminum

Long Harbour Electrical Modules, client Cianbro Corporation, to CSA W47.1. Comprised twenty-two

very large carbon steel structures with shop fabricated components that were field assembled for

barging to Newfoundland.

White Rose FPSO Topsides, client Irving Shipbuilding Inc, to CSA W47.1 and contract specifications.

Impact and hardness testing were required in procedure testing of joints with European grades of

HSS carbon steel.

LNG Terminal Saint John, client Sunny Corner Enterprises Inc and Bourque Industrial Ltd, to CSA

W47.1. HSS truss connections with European grade steel and impact and hardness testing were

required.

Coleson Cove Generating Station, client Babcock & Wilcox Canada, to ASME Section IX. Procedures

for welding duplex stainless steel and nickel alloys with GTAW, pulsed GMAW and FCAW required

corrosion testing, ferrite testing and Charpy impact tests.

Tensioner Cassette for offshore oil and gas industry, client Maritime Hydraulic Fabrication Division,

to AWS D1.1 and purchaser specifications. Very thick carbon steel plate and HSS fabrication included

requirements for hardness testing and impact testing at -10° C.

Industrial Metal StructuresALUMINUM ARCH SUPPORTS

For wastewater treatment facilities, client Geomembrane Technologies Inc

Aluminum and stainless steel arch or truss support systems have

been designed for approximately 40 geomembrane cover

installations across the United States, Canada, and Australia. Spans

have ranged from 3.6 m (12 ft) to 12 m (40 ft), and supports have

conformed to the Aluminum Specification, CAN/CSA S157, or the

Australian Aluminum Structures Standard, depending on

jurisdiction. Installations have included aluminum walkways and

railings in some cases. A full-scale test of one arch was completed

with the client to verify the failure mode and capacity of shallow arches.

ALUMINUM AND STEEL OVERHEAD SIGN SUPPORTS

For highway signs, clients include New Brunswick Department of Transportation & Infrastructure

(NBDTI), Transportation & Infrastructure Renewal Nova Scotia, L & A Metalworks

Numerous site specific designs as well as a new standard design for NBDTI have been completed inconformance with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. Cantilever, overhead bridge, and singlepost roadside sign supports have been designed, and existing structures assessed where sign areawas increased.

CARBON STEEL AND STAINLESS STEEL TANKS, HOPPERS,

CARBON STEEL AND STAINLESS STEEL TANKS, HOPPERS,& SILOS

Clients include Bourque Industrial Ltd, Noranda Brunswick Mine, McSheffery Industries Ltd, Sunny

Corner Enterprises Ltd, L & A Metalworks Ltd., Warren Environment

Numerous tanks have been designed to API 650 or to the National Building Code where applicable.

Because of Skarborn Engineering Ltd’s expertise in welding consulting, welding access and distortion

considerations are included in the details for all structures

Other examples of designs for industrial structures include an inverted conical storage structure for

gypsum at the Coleson Cove Generating Station, rectangular bin with supporting structural frame for

REPAP Groundwood Mill, and gantry crane for handling spent fuel cannisters at Pt Lepreau

Generating Station. Structural analysis and design programs and classical analysis techniques are

used for the design of structures

Warren Environment has designed many tall steel stacks for the oil and gas industry, and Skarborn

Engineering has performed design reviews of these for a number of Canadian locations

Marine FacilitiesCRUISE SHIP TERMINAL

For Saint John Port Authority through Dillon Consulting

Mooring facilities to accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world at three different berths.

Analysis and design of mooring dolphins to resist forces from currents and wind taking into account

mooring line configuration and properties. Inspection of existing mooring dolphins. Stability analysis

of existing concrete cribs. Foam filled fender design for corner impact forces.

FERRY TERMINALS

For Marine Atlantic

Numerous assessment and improvement projects were undertaken for the Newfoundland and Fundy

services, where the latter was operated by Marine Atlantic. Transfer bridges were inspected, analysed

and rated for Port aux Basques, Argentia, North Sydney, Saint John, Digby, Yarmouth and Bar Harbor.

In some cases remedial designs were prepared for damaged components due to corrosion or

accidental ship impact, or those that required change to accommodate different ramp configurations.

The pile supported dock at Argentia had experienced substantial

deterioration due to microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC).

Analysis indicated that affected piles did not have to be replaced if

the deck live load was reduced. Design of corrosion protection

system to stop MIC was prepared by a subcontractor.

Design of replacement steel sheet pile current and wave protection wall in Saint John due to

corrosion and fatigue damage.

Design of fender system replacements in Argentia and Bar Harbor, including assessment of berthing

forces.

BULK HANDLING AND CARGO TERMINALS

Clients include W. H. Crandall for Public Works Canada, Rothesay Paper, and Little Narrows Gypsum

Co.

Examples of marine facilities are:

Inspection and improvements to existing facilities and design of new facilities for Chatham, NB

and a wharf extension in Newcastle, NB.

Barge berth inspection, remedial design and construction supervision.

Assessment and design of improvements for timber wharf supporting ship loader.

In addition, both Stig Skarborn and Susan Guravich have marine structure experience with companies

other than with Skarborn Engineering Ltd. Examples are the design of Point Tupper, NS, oil terminal

berth #2, shipping terminal in Spragge, ON, field surveys for fishing harbour in Yemen, design of oil
