BARNSLEY IS ON THE UP

In the advanced manufacturing sector, Barnsley has recorded double the national growth, an 11% increase in the construction sector, a 78% increase in the logistics sector and a 7.4% increase in employment. (Source: ONS Business Register and Employment Survey Data 2012-2015)

The Glass Works is a new, attractive destination that will offer people working in these sectors, more choice and enjoyment closer to home.

THE VISION

The vision for The Glass Works and Barnsley is built on real insights into what local people, businesses and market traders want from their town.

£130 million has already been invested in new homes, town centre offices, a digital media centre, transport interchange, sixth form college and public realm.

The 21st century town centre will be future proofed and digitally enabled to ensure people and businesses continue to be attracted to Barnsley.

The markets’ long history, fresh produce, and broad selection of other goods, attract thousands of visitors every year.

A PROUD HISTORY

Naming the town centre development, The Glass Works, is a celebration of the contribution glass manufacturing made to the town’s economy.

Glass-making, like coal-mining, is a major part of Barnsley’s industrial past. It began in the town in the 17th century.

its history as much as its football, its art as much as its food, and its

shopping as much as its live events. Locals and visitors to the town

can join in all sorts of activities and the range is only going to grow.

The Glass Works is being designed and

will be delivered by Queensberry. The offer

will comprise a modern retail and leisure

environment whilst complementing the

traditions of Barnsley’s historic markets, and

reflecting the famous Barnsley spirit.

It’s much more than a shopping centre.

The Glass Works is an entirely new zone

incorporating new public spaces, redesigned

and rebranded markets, a new Central Library

and a split-level public square designed to host

a wide array of exciting town centre events.

WE’RE DRAWING LOCAL PEOPLE

AND VISITORS BACK TO THE

HEART OF BARNSLEY WITH THE

GLASS WORKS– A DISTINCTIVE,

CONTEMPORARY RETAIL

AND LEISURE DESTINATION.

The retail and leisure experience will wrap around

the existing Metropolitan Centre and provide

the community with a mix of leading brands and

independents, which together will ensure The

Glass Works is as unique, inviting and characterful

as the town.

This investment will give local people and visitors

an exciting choice and a lively and enjoyable place

to meet, eat and shop.

has been commissioned by Barnsley Metropolitan

Borough Council to draw local people and visitors back into the

heart of Barnsley. We believe experiential place making with

wellbeing and community at its core, is the future lifeblood of

our urban centres.

Queensberry designs, creates and invests in mixed-use regeneration

opportunities in towns and cities across the UK.

Our design-led approach to urban renewal is flexible and tailored

to provide the right solution for the people it will serve. We seek to

rekindle civic pride through the developments we build, while being

sympathetic to their immediate surroundings.

The Corn Exchange (Manchester), Friars Walk (Newport), and

Southgate (Bath), are three of our best-known developments.

Alongside The Glass Works in Barnsley, today we’re also leading

on the design and development of Tunsgate Quarter, Guildford, The

Metquarter, Liverpool and The Retail Quarter, Sheffield.
