Year 1 daily expectations

In year 1 your child is expected to develop independence. This involves:Coming into the class on their own.Taking responsibility for organising their own belongings: water bottles, lunch boxes, coats and communication books.Giving in letters/money etc.Getting straight on with their morning task, e.g. handwriting.

Homework expectations

Practise your spellings each week.Practise handwriting - forming all letters

correctly including capital letters.Practise writing all numbers to 20 in digits

and words. Practise reading at least 3 times a week. Practise numbers bonds for all numbers to

20.Practise counting in 2s 5s and 10s.We may give out extra activities on top of

these related to our topic.

Class Rules· Children must adhere to the Golden Rules. · Children will be rewarded for showing the Silver Book Values:

respect, caring, achievement, perseverance, and independence. Every time an adult notices a child displaying one of these values a value card and sticker will be given by the head teacher.

· Each class have an independence pot to promote independent learning. The class get 5 mins extra Golden Time if they get 20 jewels in the pot.

Golden Time · Children receive 30 minutes Golden

Time on a Friday afternoon.· Children will lose their Golden Time in

5 minute chunks if they break the Golden Rules.

· Children will first receive a warning and then lose some of their Golden Time.

Key Stage 1 Expected standard for reading

· The pupil can: · read accurately by blending the sounds in words for

all 40+ phonemes· read accurately some words of 2 or more syllables· read many common exception words

· In age-appropriate books, the pupil can: · read aloud many words quickly and accurately

without· excessive sounding and blending· sound out many words accurately

· The child can answer questions and make inferences on books that are read to them.

Children should record their opinions about the texts they read in their reading diary. Reading and phonics will be streamed.

Writing will generally be topic based, looking at a variety of different texts, such as longer stories, information texts, recounts, persuasive writing and poetry. Writing will not be streamed.

Reading and library books

Children have guided reading sessions each week.

Children will be heard individually each week before changing their books to check comprehension and accuracy.

We will record the books they are taking home in their reading log to ensure they are reading a range of styles.

Every week your child can take a new library book if they return their previous one.

Reading activities at home

All parents have been sent home a leaflet with suggested reading activities and websites.

You will also receive a bookmark with suggested questions you can ask your child before, during and after reading a book.

Please ensure your child shares and reads other books with you, e.g. from the library or their own collections.

Children can record all books they read in their communication book.

Phonics · Children have discrete phonic

lessons throughout the week helping them work on their current phase and preparing them for the Phonic Test in June.

· In order to pass the test they need to be fluent in all phases to Phase 5).

Key Stage 1 Expected standard for writing

The pupil can write sentences that are sequenced to form a short narrative. They need to:

· use capital letters and full stops · use their phonic knowledge when spelling

words· spell some common exception words · form lower case letters correctly· ensure letters are the correct size· leave spaces between words

Writing Process· Cold task – from which we set

targets for the topic.· Learn the text using actions .· Teach skills relating to targets.· Hot task - where children apply

their new skills.

In writing all children must:

· form all letters correctly when writing on lines, i.e. descenders go down below the line and ascenders are tall

· use capital letters at the beginning of sentences and for Proper Nouns (names)

· use full stops at the end of a sentence · have clear spaces between words· spell the days of the week correctly· If your child is struggling with

these please practise at home

Key Stage 1 Expected standard for maths

The pupil can: demonstrate an understanding of place value, though

may still need to use apparatus to show this. count up from 0 in 2s, 5s and 10s. read and write numbers in numerals to 100. use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20.· add and subtract a 2 digit number and ones, and a 2 digit number

and 10s, where no regrouping is required.· recall doubles and halves to 20.· recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes, i.e. triangles, rectangles,

squares, circles, cuboids, cubes, pyramids and spheres.

Aims of the Curriculum

The national curriculum for maths aims to ensure that all pupils:

become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, including problem solving.

they should be able to explain their methods and show their workings out.

Teaching Maths

Maths is taught daily. Mental Maths - we teach strategies to solve

number sentences mentally. There are 7 topic areas: Problem Solving, Number

and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Measure, Geometry, Multiplication and Division, Fractions.

Children will be taught skills in each of these areas which should then be used in other topics e.g. finding half – of a number, of a shape, of a quantity, etc.

Things to work on in Maths

· Number bonds of all numbers to 20.· Writing numbers in words and

digits. · Recognising 2D and 3D shapes. · Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
