• SUNY-Geneseo ’70• 19th Season at VMI

T he 2003 VMI lacrosse season was the firstin the program's 20-year history in whichit was affiliated with a conference. The

man behind the move to the Metro Atlantic Con-ference is the same man who has guided the pro-gram for the past 18 years, Doug Bartlett.

"I've waited 18 years to find a home forthis program and to give it something toplay for (a confernece championship)," saidBartlett after his team defeated Canisius, 13-9 in its first-ever conference game. "NowVMI lacrosse is reaping the benefits of be-ing a member of a conference." It was that moment that Bartlett knew his program washeaded in a new and more promising direction.

With 107 victories at VMI to his credit, Bartlett remains the architect of the Keydet lacrosseprogram. In his 18 seasons, Bartlett has built his program from the ground up.

In 1986, Bartlett took over a team that began varsity play in 1983 and immediately broughtrespectability to the program. Six of his first seven seasons at the helm of VMI resulted in non-losingseasons and five of those were winning seasons.

In the past 18 seasons, Bartlett’s accomplishments with the Keydet lacrosse program are un-precedented. His 1992 team was ranked in the Top 25 lacrosse poll, making it only the fourth teamin VMI history to be ranked in a national poll and his 1995 edition received votes as well.

Bartlett’s coaching excellence and accomplish-ments at VMI have been repeatedly recognized byhis peers. He has twice been selected as a coach forthe South team in the North/South Lacrosse Classic– for the first time in 1992, and again in 1998 whenhe joined Maryland coach Dick Edell on the Southsidelines. Bartlett has been a featured speaker at theSoutheastern Region Lacrosse Coaches Clinic andalso has been a keynote speaker at the United StatesLacrosse Association national convention. He current-ly serves as chairman of the Division I North / SouthLacrosse game.

Bartlett has developed a reputation as a coach whopushes his players to excel on the field and pusheshimself in the recruiting wars to obtain top notch la-crosse players for his program and for VMI.

Bartlett is a 1970 graduate of SUNY-Geneseo,where he started on the lacrosse team for four years. He previously coached at Radford University, first asan assistant and then as head coach.

He is the father of three daughters – Jessie (15),Kelsey (12) and Maiah (9).

Ass. Head Coach Mic Grant & Athletic Trainer Chris Smith

Every great coach needs a right-hand man to do his "behind-the-scenes work." Doug Bartlett's right-hand man isMic Grant, who begins his seventh season as VMI’s defen-

sive coordinator and his third with the title of associate head coach. In the summer of 2001, Grant became the recruiting coor-

dinator and involved more directly with the team's budgetaryexpenditures.

Since then, VMI has brought in two of the biggest and mosttalented recruiting classes in the history of the program.

"I think that this promotion and additional responsibilitiesexemplifies Mic's commitment of positive contributions to the pro-gram," said Bartlett. "This is certainly a statement of appreciationfor what Mic has done for VMI lacrosse."

In his six years at VMI, Grant has taken the goals against av-erage from 13.27 in his first year to 9.00 in 2000 and 10.79 in 2003."He has made a phenomenal improvement in our defense," saidBartlett. "The one-on-one defense and team concept has improveddramatically."

Grant came to VMI from Hampden-Sydney College, wherehe was an assistant coach for five seasons under Head Coach RayRostan. While at H-SC, Grant worked with the Tiger defensemen, monitored academic progress, scouted opponents, and assistedwith recruiting. During that period, six of his players achieved All-America distinction.

While at Hampden-Sydney, Grant also worked with the Ti-ger soccer program, and coordinated the summer soccer camp.Grant also has extensive experience as a lacrosse camp clinician, working at camps in Baltimore and Charlottesville, as well as inthe Hampden-Sydney area.

As a player, Grant was a two-year lacrosse letterwinner atHampden-Sydney, where he captained the squad during 1991, hissenior season. He played his first two seasons of collegiate lacrosseat Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was a member of the Bat-tling Bishops’ 1988 and 1989 NCAA Division III National Finalistteams. He played in the Division III North/South Senior All-Stargame in 1991.

A native of Charlottesville, Va., Grant was a First team, All-American, and First team, All-State defenseman at St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville. As a senior at STAB, he was themen’s lacrosse team MVP.

Grant is married to the former Heather Jenkins. The coupleresides in Lexington.

• Athletic Trainer• Fourth Season• Cal State-Chico ’98

In the 21-year history of the VMI lacrosse program,

only one athletic trainer has worked with the team for four consecutive years. This season, Chris Smith, ATC

has become that trainer. In his first three years with the program, Smith has

faced several challenging tasks dealing with "MASHsquads" of injuries, but has come through with flyingcolors in keeping the team as healthy as possible.

In the fall, Smith works with the VMI footballprogram, where he has also done an admirable job underhead trainer Lance Fujiwara.

Prior to his arrival at VMI, Smith spent a year at theUniversity of Virginia, where he received his Master's ofEducation in Athletic Training. A 1998 graduate of California State University,Chico, Smith received his Bachelor's Degree in PhysicalEducation and played on the football team as anundergraduate. Smith, 28, stayed on at CSU, Chico as agraduate assistant athletic trainer until he passed hiscertification exam in April of 1999. Smith is originally from Portsmouth, Va. He ismarried to the former Theresa Enyeart, who thoroughlyenjoys reading the VMI lacrosse media guide as well asthe football program on home gamedays. The coupleresides in Roanoke.

After falling short of the MAAC Championships last season,

the only thing on the minds of the VMI lacrosse team this year is....

Taking Care of Business

2004 Keydet Outlook

The 2003 season was VMI’s first in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The season started wellas the Keydets won their first three league games. VMI then lost four of the next five, with threeof those losses coming by just one goal. The 4-4 record left VMI one win away from qualifying forthe MAAC Tournament. With last year’s frustrations fresh on the minds of the team, the Keydetsfeel there is some “unfinished business” to take care of in 2004 and have dedicated themselves todoing so.

“If we are going to succeed in the MAAC, we are going to have to win on the road and win closegames,” said head coach Doug Bartlett. “Our team realizes that. We think of what could havebeen and it really irritates us.”

A big part of VMI’s 2004 success will hinge on its inexperienced, but talented attack line. With theloss of three of the team’s top four scorers from a year ago, Bartlett will be looking for youngerplayers to expand their roles.

After playing two years as an offensive midfielder, junior Gabe McCaig was moved to attack, giving the line some experience. “Gabe has taken toattack like a duck takes to water,” said Bartlett. “He’squick, athletic, ambidextrous and goes to the goal hard.Gabe will be our No. 1 scoring option.” After scoring 38points in two years at midfield, the coaching staff feelscomfortable that McCaig should enhance thosenumbers greatly as he takes on a more offensive role.

Sophomore Robert Trimble will also be asked to take alarger role in the offense after scoring 10 points as afreshman. A quick and talented player, Trimble'sweakness may be that he is too unselfish. With morethan twice as many assists (7) as he had goals (3) lastyear, the staff would like to see him go to the goal a littlebit more.

Fellow sophomore Will Collier was named last season’sVMI Freshman of the Year for his 12 goals. “He’s the thirdpiece to this offensive puzzle,” said Bartlett. “Whenopposing defenses make mistakes, Will will exploitthem.” Like McCaig and Trimble, Bartlett is anticipatinga larger scoring outburst from Collier.

Bartlett feels pretty confident that if any of his first lineattackmen falter, he has great depth to step right in. This leader of that pack is senior Tim Erwin, who is the most experienced of any of Bartlett’s offensive players. After spending the fall semes-

ter overseas, he will be expected to step right back inand lend his expertise and scoring punch. “He could bethe fourth guy in our three-man rotation,” said Bartlett.

The true strength to the 2004 version of VMI lacrossemay be the midfielders. “There’s a lot of depth to thismidfield unit,” said Bartlett. “It is a good blend of youthand experience.”

The first line of midfielders is as good of a trio thatBartlett feels he’s ever had in 19 years at the Institute. The line starts with junior Erik Rohrmann, who im-proved himself greatly over the offseason. “He hastaken his game and his work ethic to a new level thisyear,” said Bartlett. “Erik is making everybody else onthis team better.” Rohrmann became the first ever tri-captain to be named by the coaching staff after hisimpressive fall season.

Sophomore Tony Cavalero will be this squad’s face-offman after sharing the responsibilities with Brian Nivenlast season. This year, he will take the majority of theface-offs and be what Bartlett hopes to be the ignition of the offense. “Tony’s experience last yearwill help him now,” said Bartlett. “This is the year Tony needs to show us what he’s got.”

It took him until his senior campaign, but Pat Gregory is finally going through a school year inwhich he has been healthy for the entirety. He is being rewarded with a spot on the startingmidfield line. He has improved every year since coming to the Institute and the coaching stafffeels that his athleticism has helped him evolve from a defensive midfielder to a more completemidfielder. He has developed an in-depth understanding of the offense and will be ready to goin ‘04.

Fellow senior Dan Belzer heads up VMI’s second line of midfielders. Like Gregory, Belzer hasimproved every year and will see increased playing time because of it. His tremendous workethic, desire and passion for the game has allowed Bartlett to refer to him as “possibly the bestsecond line midfielder I’ve ever coached.”

Belzer will be complemented by sophomore David Trimble, whose identical twin brother Robertis on VMI’s attack. This version of the “Trimble Double Trouble” is an offensive midfielder who hasgreat accuracy when he releases the ball. He plays with both hands and has improved himselfphysically and mentally over the last year.

Freshman Steve Long comes out of Drexel Hill, Pa. as a proven midfielder and an athlete that VMIfeels will be able to figure into the mix right away. He’s an athletic midfielder, who can use eitherhand. Junior Jeff Rummell also is expected to figure into the second line of midfielders, as wellas freshmen Eric Harley and Nick Worek.

Defensive coordinator Mic Grant is excited about his young and talented defensive unit. He

2004 Keydet Outlook

Sophomore Lee Cook has shown a lot of improvement during the fall and will be expected to seeincreased playing time in 2004. Grant describes Cook as “a hard-nosed one-on-one defender, whounderstands the defense well.”

Cook will battle for the third defenseman position, with sophomore Adrian Cmerek and fresh-man Curtis Jaques. Cmerek, a linebacker on the football team, showed promise as a freshmanand will be counted on once he’s caught up to speed on what he missed in the fall. Jaques is anexciting young talent, who plays good position defense and clears the ball well. Freshmen JasonLaCerda and Alex Litz will also compete for playing time.

As far as VMI's last line of defense, the goalkeeper, Grant has a great deal of confidence. Despitenot playing a full game in goal, junior Matt Hook has two solid years of experience of backing upBrian Ward, who graduated last year. In 2004, Hook is ready to assume the role of the No. 1 starter. This fall, he established himself as a more confident goalkeeper and has shown his understandingof VMI's defensive concept that he has absorbed over the last two years. His tough mentality willhelp him be a leader of the defense in 2004. Hook will be backed up by sophomore KelleyDeNeen, who had a good fall and will push Hook during the season. Fellow sophomore DanFrank returns from a fall semester overseas. The coaching staff is eager to see what he brings tothe table.

The Keydet schedule looks similar to last season with the full slate of MAAC action, including tripsto Providence, Manhattan, Canisius, and Siena. The non-conference schedule remains tough witha return trip to Duke and first ever trips to Butler and Holy Cross. After coming within one goal ofdefeating cross-town rival Washington & Lee in the annual Lee-Jackson Classic last year, theKeydets will seek revenge on the Generals in this season.

On the first weekend of May, VMI hopes to be in Buffalo, where Canisius will host the MAACChampionships. To qualify for the tournament, VMI must finish in the top four of the conference,a feat they came oh so close to in 2003. No lacrosse player in red and yellow wants a repeat oflast year. In 2004, the Keydets are determined to take care of business.

feels that a lot of the success for the team this season will depend on how quickly the defense jellsas a unit.

This season the Keydets have moved senior tri-captain Will Simmons back to in-close defensemanbecause they felt comfortable with a freshman at long-stick midfielder. That freshman is CharlesBarnes, who has demonstrated maturity beyond his years. As a senior at Marple Newtown (Pa.)High School, Barnes was named the team’s defensive MVP. “He keeps pressure on the oppositionand is a monster on groundballs,” said Grant. “Barnes will be our man at long-stick midfielder."

Grant will feel more comfortable with Simmons at the in-close position, where he excelled earlierin his career. As a four-year starter and three-year captain, Simmons is the clear leader of thisdefense. He will be counted on to draw the opposition’s top offensive threat in most games andthe staff has full confidence that he will do the job.

Junior Jay Morgan is in his first year of his tri-captain role and brings a great deal of leadership tothe defense. This year, he will be asked to do more than ever before on the defensive end as far asclearing the ball and directing the defense. Grant feels that he is up to those responsibilities.
