Welcome to the South African Road Federation (SARF) Road Safety Conference

Each year nearly 1, 3 million people die worldwide as a result of a road traffic collision – more than 3000 deaths each day – and more than half of these people are not travelling in a car. Ninety percent of road traffic deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, which claim less than half the world’s registered vehicle fleet. Recognising the tremendous global burden of these fatalities and other serious injuries the UN General Assembly proclaimed the period 2011 – 2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety, with the goal of stabilizing and eventually reducing the number of deaths and injuries, on 2 March 2010. Road safety stakeholders were called upon to strengthen their cooperation, develop action plans and strategies on road safety, continue raising road safety awareness by organising advocacy events and scaling up existing efforts. It is with this background that I have the great pleasure to invite you to participate in the SARF Road Safety Conference. We would like to utilise this opportunity to deliberate on measures and actions which can be taken with regard to the strengthening of institutional capacity, provision of safe road infrastructure, safer vehicles, safer road users, including education, awareness and enforcement, which will ensure that fatalities and serious injuries are reduced significantly over the identified period. This Conference will follow on the official launch of the “Decade of Action” on 11 May 2011. These action plans will be developed through the exchange of experiences, transfer of technology, identification of gaps in knowledge and intense deliberation and discussion. We look forward to your participation. With best regards, Mutshutshu Nxumalo President: South African Road Federation
